McFalls First Grade Homework Policy

Homework is an important part of your childs school experience. Supporting good work habits requires a joint effort. I will support your child and encourage good work habits at school. Your child will benefit greatly from your support and encouragement at home. Second grade homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. All homework will be given on Monday, attached to our weekly newsletter, and will be due on Friday. Please return all homework in your childs P.A.S.S.P.O.R.T. binder on Friday. Any unfinished class work (such as a math activity page) may be taken home, but should be brought back the next day. Long-term assignments will be noted in the P.A.S.S.P.O.R.T. binder well ahead of the due date. Your child will build a greater foundation and a sense of responsibility if held accountable for their homework. Reading and Accelerated Reader: (A.R.) Research indicates that it is important for your child to read at least 20 minutes each day. Please record this on their Reading Log in his or her P.A.S.S.P.O.R.T. binder. Please remember to ask your child questions while he or she reads to foster his or her reading comprehension. The purpose of the A.R. program is to encourage reading and improve reading skills. Students will read books on their level and then take an A.R. quiz on the book. Student reading levels will be sent home once they are determined. If your child reads a book from home, they are welcome to bring it to school to take an A.R. quiz. Each student will have an A.R. point goal that they will work toward each 9 weeks. They must also keep their A.R. average above an 85% to achieve their goal. Students may not use the book to look up answers or take A.R. quizzes at home. Once students achieve their goal, their name will be added to our A.R. map! Spelling Lists and Contracts: Spelling lists and contracts will be sent home on Mondays attached to our Travelers Gazette newsletter. Spelling contract homework will be due on Fridays. Students will take a pre-test on a list of spelling words. If they master this list on the pretest, they will be able to study a more challenging list (List B). In order to qualify for List B, you can only miss one word on the pre-test. The words for List A contain high frequency words in addition to words that follow a phonetic pattern that we will be learning that week. Please note that if your child is on List B, more study time may be required. Ms. McFall (Please keep top portion as a reference.) Cut -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have read the homework policies. I have also discussed these policies with my child. Please sign and return by Friday. ________________________ Parent Signature _________________________ Student Signature Sincerely,
