Ohmic Devices Lab

This document summarizes an experiment to test whether various circuit elements are ohmic devices. Ohmic devices maintain a constant resistance over a wide range of voltages and currents, shown by a linear relationship between voltage and current on a graph. Resistors of 1/2 watt and 2 watts were tested and found to have linear voltage-current graphs, with resistance values matching expected values within 7.8% and 0.7% error, confirming them as ohmic. A lightbulb and diode had non-linear graphs, showing varying resistance, confirming them as non-ohmic devices. The experiment successfully identified ohmic and non-ohmic circuit elements based on their voltage-current characteristics.

Ohmic Devices Lab

Purpose- To test a variety of circuit elements and determine whether or not they are ohmic
devices.
Theory- Ohmic devices are those that maintain a constant resistance over a wide range of
currents and voltages. This is shown in a graph of Voltage v. Current, with resistance being the
slope of the line, that the line is linear due to a constant resistance, as compared to a non-ohmic
device, which would show a varying slope. (note: Some Ohmic devices show a slight change in
resistance at very high temperatures). This correlation is derived from Ohm’s law, which states
that the current through a circuit is equal to the voltage drop divided by the resistance, or i=V/R.

Conclusion- The purpose of the lab was to test whether or not a device was Ohmic, and this was
determined by the correlation between voltage and current when graphed. When the ½ Watt and
2 Watt resistors were used, their results showed that they were Ohmic because in the range of
voltages used, the resulting currents provided linear graphs, meaning that resistance was constant
from the device. The slope determined the experimental resistance, and these were compared to
the given resistance, resulting in a 7.8% and .7% error, respectively. On the other hand, the light
bulb and diode resulted non-linear curves, meaning that resistance was variable at different
voltages, meaning that they were non-ohmic devices. As a result, it was determined that the
resistors were Ohmic and the light bulb and diode were not.
