Sitting on the dock of the bay is pure inspiration, but it isnt the only way to savor waterfront San Francisco. Charter a sailboat and make like the U.S. Americas Cup racing team based at Golden Gate Yacht Club. More of a progressive? en escape to Alcatraz on the nations rst hybrid ferry, powered largely by solar panels, wind turbines and grid electricity. Snag a big one on a sport shing boat out of Fishermans Wharf or a home run ball out of McCovey Cove on a rented kayak during a Giants game.

more than a quarter of the state protected by parks, open space and wilderness areas, its easy to get your hands dirty in California. Thats because Californias climate begs you to break a sweat no matter what the season. Natures footprint in the Golden State is truly grand, an open-air playground that spreads all the way from the High Sierra to the Pacific shore. Wonders like Yosemite and the mighty Sequoia National Parks get most of the dish, but Californias state parks are just as mind blowing and readymade for adventure. Walk through the soaring trees of the Del Norte Coast Redwoods in the far north, as pristine today as it was a thousand years ago. Clamber to the top of Mt. Diablo in the Bay Area for a view that takes in more of the earths surface than just about any
other place on the planet. Cruise the gigantic Oceano Dunes along the Central Coast on the back of a horse or ATV. Test your mountain biking skill (and guts) along Mr. Toads Wild Ride, a rough and tumble trail south of Lake Tahoe. And then wind down (with a splash of California wine) at a secluded oasis hot springs in Anza-Borrego Desert. Thats just a small taste of amazing outdoor California.

For Beth Rodden, climbing is more than a spare time hobby, its a lifestyle. Of course, it wasnt always this way. Growing up in Davis, Beth had a normal childhood until a local climbing gym opened in her town. From that point on, her life has revolved around one obsession: climbing. As one of the worlds most accomplished female free climbers, Beth has many credits to her name, including being the first woman to free climb two routes on El Capitan in Yosemite, where she currently resides.
