DME 1 Assignment 1

The document discusses designing various mechanical components and joints subjected to different loads. It includes problems involving determining dimensions of connecting rods, cotter joints, knuckle joints, C-frames, press frames, C-clamps and brackets based on given forces and material properties. It also discusses concepts related to machine design, types of materials like cast irons, steels and aluminum alloys as well as manufacturing processes.

Assignment -1 Part-A 1.

The bush of the small end of a connecting rod is shown in Fig-1 Calculate i)the maximum and minimum diameters of the bush and connecting rod ii) the maximum and minimum interferences between them.(Given 15 fall in the range of 14 to 18 and FD for r is 23Microns)

2. It is required to design a cotter joint to connect two steel rods of equal diameters. Each rod is subjected to an axial tensile force of 65KN. Design the joint and specify its main dimensions in Fig-2. 3. Two rods are connected by means of a knuckle joint as shown in Fig-3. The axial force P acting on the rods is 25KN. The rods and pins are made of plain carbon steel 45C8(Syt=380N/mm) and the factor of safety is 2.5. The yield strength in shear is 57.7 % of yield strength in tension. Design the joint and specify its main dimensions in Fig-3. 4. A C-frame subjected to a force of 15KN is shown inFig-4. It is made of Grey cast Iron FG300 and factor of safety is 2.5. determine the dimensions of the cross-section of the frame. 5. The frame of a 100KN capacity press is shown in Fig-5. It is made of grey cast iron FG300 and factor of safety is 2.5. Determine the dimensions of the cross section at X-X. 6. Fig-6 shows a C-clamp, which carries a load P of 25kN. The cross section of the clamp is rectangle and the ratio of width to thickness(b/t) is 2:1. The clamp is made of cast steel of Grade

20-40(Sut=400N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 4. Determine the dimensions of the cross section of the clamp. 7. A bracket made of steel FeE200 and subjected to a force of 5kN acting at an angle of 300 to the vertical, is shown in Fig-7. Factor of safety is 4. Determine the dimensions of the cross section of the bracket.
