Indian Standard
HIGH SPECIFICATION FOR HEAT DUTY FIRECLAY REFRACTORIES
( Fourth Revision )
0.
FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Fourth Revis:on.) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 2 I April 1?81, after the draft finalized by the Refractories Sectional Committee had been approved by the Structural and Metals Division Council. 0.2 Fircclay refractories are classified into high heat duty and moderate heat duty refractories, 111~latter being subdivided into two groups, namely, Group A and Group I1 on the basis of certain wellestablished properties. This standard deals rvith high heat duty firecla? refractories. 0.3 This standard was first issued in 1949 and subsequently revised in 1953, 1958 and 1967. This has again been revised in the light of the experience gained since its last revision and an additional variety of high heat duty rcfractorics, which fmd wide usage in some critical applications where lower apparent poroYily ant1 IliKhcr cold crushing strength are required, have been included in this standard as Type 2 Refractones. 0.4 It is to be pointed out that though a number of ICSIS have been prescribed in this standard, it is not intended thatall of them should be carried out in each case, as by a judicious application of some of the tests it should bc possible IO jutlgc the quality of bricks in a given lot. Howcvcr, the tests to bc conductor1 in each case wo~~ld depend upon the service conditions for which the bricks :trc required, and purchasers arc advised to indicate these conditions at the time of plncins an indent OI order. 0.5 This standard keeps in view the manufacturing followed in the country in this field. and trndc practices
0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, OK in expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded
PS : 8 - 1983 accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significaiit places re ined in the rounded off value, should be the same as that of the specified T ,valueI in this standard.
1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers the requirements for two types of high duty burnt fireclay refractories for general purposes. 2, SUPPLY OF MATERIAL heat
2.1 General requirements relating to the supply of high heat duty fireclay refractories shall be as laid down in IS : I387- 1967 t. 2.2 The refractories shall be compact, of homogeneous texture and free from cracks, voids and other flaws. They shall be burnt evenly throughout, shall have no soft corners and have sufficient mechanical strength. 3. TYPES 3.1 High types: heat duty fireclay refractories shall be of the following two
Type 1 - Suitable for general applications, and Type 2 - Suitable for more critical applications. 4. CHEMICAL COMPOSrUON
4.1 The alumina content of both Type 1 and Type 2 refractories when determined in accordance with the methods given in IS : 1527-1966: or IS : 1335-19596 shall be not less than 40 percent. 4.2 Provided that such of the physical properties like refractoriness under load and linear changes after reheating which are considered essential for the particular service conditions are satisfactory, the stipulation regarding alumina content may be waived subject to the agreement between the purchaser and th: manufacturer for both Type 1 and lype 2 refractories. *Ruler for rounding off numerical values ( rcc6cd).

7. SAMPLING
7.1 Rcprescntarivc samples shall bc drawn according to the s&me of sampling given in IS : 1528 ( Part 7 )-1974* br carrying out test jpecified in the standard.
KOTZ - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer. IS1 marked products are also continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a liccnce for the use of the ISI Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
