Floating Holiday Form

The document is a request form for staff members at the New York Public Library to request floating holidays. It requires the staff member to provide their name, unit, and requested date. It then must be approved or denied by the staff member's supervisor who provides their name, title, and signature. If approved, the supervisor notes the calendar year. It provides procedures for floating holidays, noting that union staff hired on or after July 1, 2004 are eligible for one floating holiday per year, while all other staff receive two. It outlines requirements for submitting requests in advance and being approved depending on operations.

Floating Holiday Procedures

It is no longer a requirement that the approved Floating Holiday form be sent to Human Resources. Managers are advised to retain the completed/approved forms for a period not to exceed two years. Salaried staff are eligible for the two "floating holidays" at the beginning of each calendar year with the following exception:

Effective July 1, 2004: Union salaried staff hired on or after July 1, 2004 are eligible for one "floating holiday" at the beginning of each calendar year. The "floating holidays" must be used in the calendar year in which they occur. Staff are required to forward a written request for the "floating holiday" at least 30 work days in advance of the requested day to the immediate supervisor. The immediate supervisor must respond in writing to the staff member's request within 10 working days after the receipt of the request. The day selected as the floating holiday will be approved provided the operations of The Library permit. If the initial request is denied, staff will be asked to select another day, the supervisor will respond. Again this is done in writing. In eTime, enter the appropriate number of hours (7 hours for 35 hour week, 8 hours for 40 hour week, pro-rated for eligible part timers) and select pay code "Floating Holiday". Non-union salaried staff who begin employment after July 1st are eligible for one "floating holiday" for the remainder of that calendar year. All salaried staff who begin employment after November 15th are not eligible for any "floating holidays" for the remainder of that calendar year. Staff must be on "active" duty at The Library in order to take the "floating holidays." Staff while on unpaid leave are not eligible for the "floating holidays." Staff who leave the Library are not eligible for the floating holidays."

*This applies to staff in titles covered by collective bargaining.
