Course description:
The course introduces the students to the practice of occupational therapy in muscular skeletal and surgical conditions. The aims are to develop the students knowledge and skill in the treatment techniques and activities to address the deficits as a result form injury in muscular skeletal structure and surgical conditions. This course is focused around problem based learning. Case chosen will reflect the common diagnostic categories treated by occupational therapists. Lecture topics on intervention strategies will include scientific approaches used, scientific physical modalities, therapeutic rehabilitation equipment, remedial games and other physical modalities.

Course Outcome: At the end of this course student should be able to


1. Identify and analyze the problem raised as the result of the muscular-skeletal, medical and surgical conditions in the occupational performance areas (OPA) and occupational performance components (OPC). 2. Select, apply and interpret the assessments tools and method related to the problem. 3. Select and implement appropriate occupational therapy intervention in the muscular skeletal, medical and surgical conditions to meet the occupational function goals. 4. Grade the intervention program in light of the client progress. 5. Evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

Lesson outcome: At the end of this course student should be able to


CO1.a Identify types of intervention commonly use by occupational therapists in orthopedic-surgical conditions CO1.b selects most appropriate assessment and intervention strategy for a given case. CO2.a describe purpose of assessment CO2.b applies the assessment with adherence to procedure and safety. CO2.c identify problem detected or highlighted from the result of assessment CO2.d formulate aims of treatment from the assessments CO3.a explain principles/procedure of intervention CO3.b conduct intervention in adherence to procedure and safety for each intervention strategies CO4.a explain principles of activity analysis, gradation and modification CO4.b conduct activity analysis and gradation of intervention on a given case CO4.c suggest modification needed for a given case
