ENGINEERING LEVEL 4 (Semester 2) DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Course Unit Code : ME 419 Title : Marine Engineering & Naval Architecture Number of Credits : 3 Pre-requisites : None LEARNING OBJECTIVE To acquire an understanding of the basic concepts in Marine Machinery and Ship Configuration and analysis LEARNING OUTCOMES A student should be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of Working and operational principles of Marine engines, Propulsion Systems and Auxiliary Machines. Identification and representation of ships geometry. Calculation Hydrostatics Particulars and stability of a ship for a given loading condition. Approximate estimation of ships resistance and propulsion power. Hours per week : Lectures 2.5 Tutorials 1/2 Practical 2/2
SCHEME OF ASSESSMENT Final Examination-70% A written examination for which 70% of the total marks are allocated Continuous Assessment-30% 02 written exercises one hour each for which 20% of the total marks are allocated 04 course-works for which 10% of the total marks are allocated SYLLABUS
Pumps and Pumping Systems Explain the working procedure of centrifugal pumps.(single stage/vertical/horizontal/high pressure/high capacity type pumps). Difference between gear and screw type pumps.

Steering Gear Systems Discuss in detail how a non follow system varies from a follow up type system. Explain a four ram electro-hydraulic type steering gear system Describe a Hele-shaw pump. Ships air conditioners & Refrigerators Explain the Vapour Compression cycle of refrigeration. Describe a Three-room temperature refrigeration system. Explain a single duct air conditioning system. Describe a twin duct air conditioning system

Coefficient of Forms 2 hour Definitions of block coefficient, Waterplane area coefficient, Midship area coefficient, Prismatic coefficient with appropriate sketches Estimations of above coefficients for given dimensions 2 hours
5. Hydrostatics Particulars
Definitions of vertical and longitudinal center of buoyancy (KB and LCB), Centre of floatation (LCF), Tonnes Per Centimeter immersion (TPC) , Metacentre and metacentric height (BM and KM) Derive expression for KB, BM, and KM of a rectangular barge, Variation between draft and metacentre, minimum metacentric height. 4 hours

Method of integration of ships lines- Trapezoidal rule, Simpsons First, Second and Third rules, Techbycheff rule Use of Simpsons rules to estimate 1. Waterplane area, centre of flotation 2. Displacement and KB using waterplane areas 3. Displacement and LCB using cross-sectional areas 4. Second moment of area of waterplanes and BM calculations

Initial Stability Theory of ships and its limitation, Stable, Unstable and Neutral Equilibrium conditions. Theory on effect of shifting, loading and unloading of a small weight transversely and inclination of the ship due to movement of centre of gravity Effect of suspended weight to the centre of gravity and stability of the ship. 4 hours
