The sheet attached to the electro-stimulator Xformer/EXE is designed to provide a practical and fast reference tool. The tables on the sheet have been organised according to the four programme sections on the Xformer/EXE and will help you use the machine in a simple and precise way by providing details on weekly stimulation frequencies, muscle groups to be treated and also by suggesting the best treatment times for each application. These tables are simply work-out proposals and should not be considered binding. Your athletics trainer or doctor can give you further advice on how to optimise training and/or treatment with the Xformer/EXE electrostimulation programmes. IMPORTANT!: We strongly recommend seeing a physician or physiotherapist before carrying out either post-injury or postsurgery rehabilitation treatment.

Introduction
7

Above all during the first electrostimulation sessions, it is a good idea to focus special attention on how the electrodes are positioned on the body. Good treatment results depend on such positioning. Application of the electrodes in fact must also comply with a number of rules which will become a habit only after using XFormer/EXE for a certain period of time. For those approaching electrostimulation for the first time, we suggest taking a careful look at the photographic images which clearly indicate, muscle by muscle, how to apply the gel adhesives so as to ensure the correct positioning of the positive and negative poles marked by the grey and black colour respectively of the jacks.

Types of electrodes and where to place them on the body

9

APPLICATION OF THE SOLID GEL ADHESIVE ELECTRODES Remove the protective film from the adhesive electrodes and keep this for subsequent use. On each muscle group involved in the treatment, place a pair of adhesive electrodes. Connect the electrodes to a lead and fit this to an output socket of the appliance. Important : make sure the polarity of the leads is correct. Conventionally, the black buttons indicate the negative electrodes, while the grey buttons indicate the positive electrode. The electrodes must generally be positioned following the general instructions described in the manual relating to treatment applications and programs. These points are subjective. After some trial and error it will nevertheless be simple to find the positions that ensure best possible stimulation. Adjust the position of the electrodes only after reducing the current on the relevant appliance channel. The main unit of XFormer/EXE features 4 separate outputs: the number of outputs to be used depends on the type of application and on how many areas need treating at the same time. XFormer/EXE can work perfectly well with just one output.

APPLICATION OF WATER SPONGE ELECTRODES Soak the electrode sponges in normal water using the sprayer provided. The sponges must be perfectly soaked before each treatment, otherwise they will tend to insulate and not conduct the impulses properly (should they become dry, add water including during treatment). Position the elastic straps and fasten using the special buckle on the area where the electrodes are to be fitted. Insert the electrodes underneath the straps on the application points, following the instructions described in the manual relating to electrode treatments and positioning. During the entire treatment, the electrodes must adhere perfectly to the skin and consequently, the elastic straps must be adequately tightened and, if necessary adjusted according to need. Connect the buttons of the leads provided to the electrode connectors and connect these to the appliance. Please remember that to achieve the best results from the electrostimulation device, electrode positioning must directly involve the mass of the muscle to be treated and not the end part connected to the tendons. At this point in fact, the stimulation will not achieve the desired contraction effect because the motoneuron that transmits the electric impulse branches down inside the muscle fibres. The following images will show you how to position the electrodes on top of each single muscle or group of muscles. Initially, it is best to carefully follow the examples shown, but because the anatomy of single individuals differs, with practice you will be able to find the best areas on which to fit the electrodes by yourself.
11

10

The fact is that not only does the muscle formation of single individuals differ, but so does skin resistance and above all the fatty layer affects electrical impulse transmission. The layer of subcutaneous fat in particular tends to be insulating with respect to electric current, and this is distributed differently from one person to another. As a practical rule, we just wish to say that the adipose layer above the muscle is fairly thick and it may be necessary to considerably increase the current to achieve the effect indicated by the selected program. If corresponding muscles have to be exercised during the same session, for instance, the quadriceps of the thigh of the right and left legs, the electrodes will have to be positioned perfectly symmetrical on the relevant muscle areas, otherwise the results of stimulation on the two sides could be different. It should also be remembered that the electrically stimulated muscle must work by means of isometric contractions, meaning without excessive freedom of movement during contraction to prevent any troublesome feeling of cramp. The position of the body can be different and freer when low electrical intensity work programs are used: the absence of major contractions means the part involved can be left free. The operating position with the electrostimulation unit is also important in relation to the greater or lesser mobility of the areas where the electrodes are fitted. Before starting a workout session, it is best to take up a comfortable position so as to enable each body area to work in the best possible way. The illustrations alongside the photos showing electrode fitting, will indicate from time to time the best position to take up in relation to the trained muscle group. In any case, you should feel comfortable and, if possible, perform muscle stimulation in an environment where temperature is between 18 and 30C.

HOW TO USE We suggest using the sponge electrodes on large muscle areas that can be comfortably wrapped in the retention straps, as in the case of thighs, buttocks or the abdominal region. The sponge electrodes are also very useful on very hairy parts of the body. The solid-gel adhesive electrodes are on the other hand recommended for all applications on any part of the body that can be treated with electrostimulation.

SPORT TABLES The standard TRAINING FREQUENCY contemplates using the electrostimulator for three weekly sessions on alternate days for each muscle group. The electrostimulation can be combined with sports training during the same day. In this case, this is considered as combined training and electrostimulation is best performed just once a week because recovery times tend to lengthen due to the fact that muscle exercise is particularly intense. This type of method represents an advanced training model and can only be performed after a period of 3-4 electrostimulation sessions held a long time from specific voluntary training. The TRAINING SCHEDULE contemplates cycles of 3-4 weeks of training by electrostimulation, followed by 3 weeks of sports training with voluntary contraction. In the event of wanting to train different aspects such as Strength and Power, the alternate cycle system can be adopted, such as, for instance: - 1st week Strength program 2 - 2nd week Power program 3 - 3rd week Strength program 2 - 4th week Power program 3 Prolonged electrostimulation on the same muscle group. 12-15 training sessions are enough to obtain good results. It should not be forgotten that muscles require adequate periods to recover. From a general point of view, the sports training process is based on a number of fundamental notions, which however must be adapted to the single case. For this reason, the assistance of a coach or competent personal trainer is recommended whenever possible.

BEAUTY TABLES The correct and regular use of the Beauty programs may considerably improve the tonicity of tissues and helps, along with a balanced diet, reducing cellulite as well as the localised adipose membrane. Below is an approximate strategy for the successful use of available programs in Xformer EXE: 1st week Draining (5 weekly sessions) 2nd week Draining (5 weekly sessions) 3rd week Lipolytic (4 weekly sessions) 4th week Shaping and toning (3/4 weekly sessions) 5th week Shaping and toning (3/4 weekly sessions) 6th week Draining (3/4 weekly sessions)

If the pursued goal is to just tone up the muscle groups, only the toning and sports programs may be used for a period of 3-4 weeks, followed by 2-3 weeks of recovery and training with voluntary contraction.

ANTALGIC TABLES Each of the three programs available in the Antalgic section of Xformer/EXE acts according to a well defined biological principle, but always pursuing the objective of bringing about a nearly immediate relief from pain. The following tables suggest a series of applications which may benefit in the commonest cases of pain sensation. The user him/herself will be in a position to realize, after a few applications, the current intensity that he/she is supposed to provide to the electrodes in order to maintain a constant level of tickling on the skin, without ever getting to bringing about the contraction of the underlying muscular fibres; this would be a different kind of treatment, and would not obtain the desired pain-killing effect.

86

87

ANTALGIC

Cervicalgia
(medical application)

ANTALGIC

Lower back pain

(medical application)

In all cases of pain at the back of the neck or top part of the back due to muscle contractures. Prolonged muscle tension causes pressure on the blood vessels and reduces oxygenation and the supply of blood to the muscle fibres. The continuation of this situation, typical of bad postures when driving or sitting in front of a computer, can cause the accumulation of acid and blood vessel atrophy. A doctor will be able to recommend proper treatment use.

In cases of pain in the lumbar region due to chronic muscular contractures as a consequence of weak vertebral muscles, but not to disorders such as intestinal, gynaecological or kidney problems. A doctor will be able to recommend proper treatment use.

2 channels 4 electrodes (3,5x4,5 cm) Always keep to the indicated polarity (black and grey) and electrode dimension.
Take up a comfortable position as shown in the illustration. During treatment muscles shall be relaxed and not contracted due to a bad position of the body,
Programs Duration of treatment Intensity Treatment protocol ANTALGIC > DECO; ANTALGIC > TENS 4 weeks Adjust intensity until intense skin prickling is felt 1st week: 2 applications a day (1 with DECO program, 1 with TENS program) 3 subsequent weeks: 1 session a day with DECO program.

2 channels 4 electrodes (3,5x4,5 cm) Always keep to the indicated polarity (black and grey) and electrode dimension.

ANTALGIC

Heaviness in the legs

(medical application)

ANTALGIC

Muscle pull
(medical application)

IWhenever a sensation of heaviness in the legs is perceived, with no problems of venous insufficiency or of circulatory stasis, varicose veins or oedemas. Prolonged muscle tension causes pressure on the blood vessels and reduces oxygenation and the supply of blood to the muscle fibres This situation is typical when one remains in a standing position for a long time and may induce a strong sensation of heaviness in the legs. Electrostimulation may considerably improve the situation .

In cases of muscle pulls or strains, i.e. traumatic lesions due to abrupt and violent movements, often with cold muscles. When a muscle pull is involved, the muscle appears contracted and rigid and each movement becomes painful. Electrostimulation combined with muscular rest will give excellent results in terms of pain relief. A doctor will be able to recommend proper treatment use. Place the electrodes near the aching muscular area. To this aim, use the positioning tables from 1 to 25 in this manual.

4 channels 8 electrodes (3,5x4,5 cm) Always keep to the indicated polarity (black and grey) and electrode dimension.
Take up a comfortable position as shown in the illustration, During treatment muscles shall be relaxed and not contracted due to a bad position of the body.
Programs Intensity Treatment protocol ANTALGIC > DECO ; SPORT>ACTIVE RECOVERY Adjust intensity until intense skin prickling is felt 1st week: 2 applications a day by alternating DECO with ACTIVE RECOVERY Then decrease frequency of sessions as needed. Maintenance: 2 applications a week of ACTIVE RECOVERY

ANTALGIC

Chronic pain in the joints

(medical application)

Knee joint In all arthralgia cases, i.e. chronic pain in the joints due to inflammations or deterioration due to age, compressions etc. The Tens program does bring about a temporary remission of pain, but may do nothing about the causes of pain. A doctor will be able to recommend proper treatment use.

REHAB TABLES When using electrostimulation for rehabilitation purposes, it is important to select programs taking into consideration the real condition of the muscle to be treated, as well as the result which one wants to obtain. The examples contained in the following tables mainly involve the fibres of the first type or red fibres, which help maintain posture and are involved in repetitive actions and resistance. These are in fact the type of fibres which are first hit by muscular atrophy, which is caused by a period of immobilisation. We highly recommend consulting a specialist or physiotherapist before beginning rehabilitation training using electrostimulation.

95

REHAB

Post injury

In the period immediately after an injury, the specific currents of this program enable the muscle to maintain minimum tone and function characteristics, which would tend to be reduced due to a temporary suspension of normal activities. Electrostimulation turns out to be a useful practice for functional recovery and for improving results obtained by traditional rehabilitation therapies. Below are a number of rehabilitation cases where electrostimulation is frequently used. Treatment of twisted ankles Sprain or breakage of the front ligament of the knee Chondropathy rotulea treatment Treatment following operations on the meniscus We highly recommend consulting a specialist or physiotherapist before beginning rehabilitation training using electrostimulation. These specialists will be able to indicate the most suibable positioning of electrodes onto the areas involved, accordino to the specific problem.
Programs Duration of treatment TTime (each application) Intensity Treatment protocol REHAB > POST-INJURY 2 weeks 30 minutes Adjust intensity until a deep muscular contraction is obtained, but without ever reaching the pain threshold. 1st week: 2 applications a day. 2nd week: 1 application a day. Subsequent weeks: we recommend using muscle strengthening programs; see specific sheet.

Here are some examples of electrode positioning:

Ankle joint

Knee joint

Elbow joint

1 channel 2 electrodes (3,5x4,5 cm)

2 channels 4 elecrodes (4x9 cm)

2 channels 4 electrodes (3,5x4,5 cm)

Always keep to the indicated polarity (black and grey) and electrode dimension.

Take up a comfortable position as shown in the illustration. During treatment muscles shall be relaxed and not contracted due to a bad position of the body.

According to the area to be treated, select the programs for the upper part of the body or the lower part of the body
96 97

REHAB

Muscle strengthening

Wherever it is necessary to stimulate either single muscles of wider areas having become weakened as a result of injury, surgery or long immobilisation periods.
Electrostimulation turns out to be a useful practice for functional recovery and for improving results obtained by traditional rehabilitation therapies. Place the electrodes near the aching muscular area. To this aim, use the positioning tables from 1 to 25 in this manual. Take up a comfortable position as shown in the illustration.
