Method of manipulation: The needle is inserted for 3.3 cm and retained for 30
minutes.

Hand qigong:

The patient assumes a standing position with one leg thrust forward and the entire
body relaxed with the breath quiescent. The arm on the side with leg forward is raised
up to the limit with the palm turned upward; then the arm is rotated with the
fingers turned; the other hand is pressed downward with palm facing backward. The
forward leg is moved back, the palms placed together and, following the upper body,
they are turned to one side with the eyes focused on them. The qi is intentionally
moved downward, and then upward after it is dispersed throughout the lower body.
This exercise is repeated on both sides 28 times to relieve the dull pain over the
shoulder, costal region, and lumbar spinal column (Figs. 44 and 45).
