Student Achievement Alina McDonald Track
Ever wondered how you could improve your endurance and have lots of FUN at the same time? Well, just ask Alina McDonald as she does both as a Carolina Homeschool Cougars (CHC) track member and a USA Track & Field (USATF) pole vault winner! Alina says, I practice and train several days a week, I weight lift to help with my upper body strength and I eat pasta to get carbs, so I can have longer lasting energy. I have been running track and pole vaulting for 2 years. As a track member for CHC Alina often participates in competitions within and out of the state. In addition to the love she has for the sport she also takes the time to encourage her peers about the advantages of being a track member. Alina says, We give them the details and we tell them how much fun we always have. My coach is going to host a Halloween costume vault in October. That is so much fun because we get to wear a Halloween costume and pole vault in it! If that doesnt get you interested in the sport, I dont know what will! As with any sport you have to practice safety as an individual and as part of a team. Alina says, If I could enhance one thing about the life of a track member, it would probably be to make our bodies more immune to injuries. I tore 2 of the 3 ligaments in my foot because I slowed down and let go of the pole after it picked me up. I luckily landed on the mat, but my toes got caught while I was falling and my foot was pulled backwards. I couldnt run for 3 months. With Alinas evident enthusiasm and team spirit Im sure the team was as eager for her return as was she to return to the sport she loves. If

Student Achievement Meredith Till Equestrian
Meredith Till has been showcasing horses with the Interscholastic Equestrian Association for 2 years. Prior to that she showed in various combined training shows where participants ride in 3 different disciplines during the day: dressage, stadium jumping, and cross-country jumping. She also loves to go on Fox Hunts. Meredith says, Competing has taught me the value of preparation and perseverance and has also highlighted how important good sportsmanship is. Working closely with the horses I ride has also helped me acquire skills in leadership, teamwork, patience, and acceptance. Through her experiences, Meredith has learned how to focus on her work and review her progress. Knowing you are going to compete sets a deadline of sorts for making progress. She explains that working with horses has made her bolder and more patient. With horses, you have to lead or you will go places you dont want to go and do things you would rather not do. She says that she is learning how to lead and compromise in order to get the horse to respond favorably to her prompts. Recently Meredith participated in a show in Kentucky where she served in a support capacity for a trainer and some of her clients. As an apprentice, Meredith is gaining valuable experience that will help her in the future. She says, Working with professionals gives me the opportunity to learn about the many aspects of showing, caring for the horses, and working with clients and other competitors at a show. She also experienced an unfortunate aspect of horse shows regarding horse injuries. Horse athletes, just like human athletes, get injuries that

sideline them at some pretty inconvenient times. According to Meredith, The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) is a great source for teens to learn about and to participate in horse shows. The IEA website is www.rideiea.com. She states that one does not have to own a horse to compete, and there are listings of teams on the website. Some teams are school affiliated and some are barn affiliated. It is a good way to meet other young riders and get experience riding a lot of different horses. Meredith has a passion for caring for horses in addition to showing them. She says, As part of my apprenticeship I feed, wash, groom, ride, and just spend time with them. Showing is a way to gauge the progress I am making as a rider and as a co-worker with the horse. In order to improve her showing experiences, Meredith indicates that she would like to be more proactive in getting feedback from the judges on her performances, and she would like to have all of her rides videotaped so she could watch and critique them later. For aspiring horse show enthusiasts just getting started Meredith advises, Get ready to work hard, get dirty, love your animal, dont get discouraged relationships can be difficult, and feel the freedom of the ride,

Student Achievement ShaiKeira Young Artist
ShaiKeira Young loves art and strives to be a great artist. Art has been ShaiKeiras hobby since she was six years old. She engages in various forms of artwork, but mainly drawings and crafts. She really enjoys drawing cartoons and real people, based not on how we see them but how she interprets them in her mind. ShaiKeiras says, My artwork is based on what I feel, see and imagine. Expressing herself through her artwork is something ShaiKeira stated as well. She said, The pros are that I get to express my feelings to others, and my creativity. In other words, artwork is more than just a hobby to ShaiKeira. Its a way to express herself and her imagination, and she likes it that way. ShaiKeira says she wouldnt change anything about her work and that she would help other teens who desire to be involved in art. She would do this by giving compliments, encouraging them, and trying to help them out. ShaiKeira is very kind, so she would help when given the opportunity. She gave five tips for young artists just starting out. They are: (1) If you draw something and you dont think it looks good, dont throw it away because it might look great to somebody else, (2) always be positive, (3) keep practicing because practice makes perfect, (4) never give up, and (5) when you get frustrated take a deep breath. If you are an aspiring young artist, try using ShaiKeiras tips. It might be just what you need to become a successful artist. ShaiKeira Young is definitely a talented young lady and hopefully her artwork will continue to impress.
