ASSIGNMENT 1 Pro Tools Review


Preliminary
It is strongly recommended that you read through these instructions completely before you begin the assignment. Log on to a Humber Network connected computer Double-click on DropBox When the window opens up simply type the first few letters of your teachers last name o your selection will jump to a folder with your teachers last name (cookpe, terryi, greenspd) Inside the folder there is o a Pickup folder This is where you will pick up very large assignments

Purpose
For your fourth-year project you will need to be able to perform basic editing, prepare sessions, possibly record overdubs, and come to your studio sessions with a Pro Tools session prepared for the recording engineer. This assignment will serve as a review of work you did in Intro to Music Technology and help you prepare for your fourth year project.

Instructions
Copy the folder "MUS3004 Assnt #1 to the Sessions partition on your Firewire drive o PT file consists of session with a 2 complete takes of Greasy G and an alternate ending take o Open the .ptx file and save as (see naming convention below) Stereo Mix Buss/Master Fader o Set all of the track outputs to an available buss (e.g.: Buss 15-16) o Create a stereo Aux (you might label it Mix Fader) o Set the input of this Aux to Buss 15-16 o Set the output of this Aux to Interface 1-2 o Solo Safe this Aux so that you can solo individual tracks

Editing o Take 2 is your base take Copy and paste it to the end of the timeline in the Edit Window o Take 1 has the better guitar solo so use it by making an arrangement edit. o Use the alternate ending (Take 3) from the beginning of the drum feature to the end of the tune o Apply appropriate fade ins and fade outs before and after music Overdubbing o replace the saxophone track in the first A section at the beginning of the tune by overdubbing your own instrument o (you can sign out a mic from reception and record in one of the Workstations) Markers o your edited version should have markers denoting each section of the music just like in the original takes Mix and Explanation o Create a musical balance by adjusting the levels applying some automation using stereo panning applying EQ and/or other plug-ins adding reverb o Briefly explain each of your mix settings. What do you like or dislike about the musical balance you have achieved?

Deliverables:

Due Week 4 Class (Sept. 24, 2013), no later than 11 pm. Completed assignment Submit your completed assignment to Blackboard. Look under Assignments, Assignment 1. Upload 1 zipped file with the naming convention o 3004_0x_Assign_0y_FirstName_LastName where x is your section number y is the Assignment number for example: 3004_05_Assign_01_Ian_Terry.zip When unzipped the the following folder structure must be present o One folder named as per the naming convention o Within that folder there must be: 1. .ptx file using the naming convention 2. an Audio Files folder containing only your newly-recorded audio files 3. a text file with an explanation of your mix settings 2
