MOORING SYSTEMS:
It is very important for ship to be safely moored at which ever location.
The function of a mooring system is to prevent the vessel from drifting away from a
berth and holds the ship in place in relation to its position for operations.
Mooring lines also assist in heaving the vessel alongside the berth and can be used to
assist in unberthing.
The mooring system has to maintain the ship's position against the.forces that will be
trying to move it, which may be caused by one or more of the following.
a) Wind.
b) Current.
c) Surge due to passing ships.
d) Waves and swell.
e) Change of freeboard.
The mooring system is generally built to hold the vessel to meet following criteria.
Wind 60 knots plus a current on beam of 0. 75 knots , or
Wind 60 knots, plus a current from ahead or astern of 3 knots.
Both the wind and the current forces are proportional to the square of the wind or current
speed, thus the force caused by a 60 knots wind is four times that caused by a 30 knot
wind, and the force exerted by a 3 knot current is nine times that exerted by a 1 knot
current.
Wire or synthetic fibre ropes:
. The key factor for. any wire or rope are strength, which is usually described by reference
to minimum breaking load, and elasticity, which is a measure of its stretch under load.
When making requisition for ropes ensure they are of sufficient strength.
A rough guide line is the following mooring retention as per size of the vessel.
Mooring retention = Number of mooring lines X ( Line breaking strength or winch brake
holding capacity)

For vessels greater than 45,000 tons deadweight mooring ropes are generally preferred.

Mooring ropes and wires must reeled in correct direction and manner.

Brake bands are designed for the line to pull directly against the fixed end of the brake
band. Reeling the line in wrong direction may reduce the brake holding power by up to
50 percent. Winch drums should be marked to indicate correct reeling .
. Brake holding capacity:
The value of brake holding capacity in relation to the size ofthe line is important. Brakes
should have holding capacity of about 60 pet of the rope I wire which permits slippage
before the rope I wire breaks.
It should be remembered that brake holding power is always greater than the heaving
power and that once the brake starts to slip ( renderO it is impossible to heave in unless
the forces causing the slippage are reduced.
Deterioration in brake holding capacity will be caused by wear down ofbrake linings or
the winch brake drum condition deterioration.
Brake holding capacity should therefore be conducted annually or after excessive load
has been experienced.
Brake linings should be renewed if there is any significant deterioration of holding
power.
The mooring ropes should be changed end to end every 3 years and or if more than 5
percent strands are broken which ever is earlier.
Mooring lines should be kept fully tight at all times at the berth.
Mixed moorings in the same direction should be avoided.
Attached is the form and calculation for testing of winch brakes.
The form should be completed and kept on board.
Please comply with above mooring requirements.
