GulMohar: Reader 3

Marco Polo was an Italian who became famous for his travels through Asia about five hundred years ago. He was one of the first persons from Europe to travel into Mongolia, China, India and Africa. In his book, The Travels of Marco Polo he describes the story of his travels along the Silk Road to China;the Silk Road was the oldest trade route to China and the book was the most important account of the world outside Europe at that time. It served to encourage the people of Europe to trade with China and the Far East and explorers like Columbus looked for easy ways to sail to China and India. Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy around 1254. In 1271, when he was 17 years old, he left for Asia with his father and uncle. On this journey, he became a favorite of Kublai Khan, the Mongol Emperor. He roamed through Mongolia and China for 17 years. He travelled farther into China than anyone from Europe had ever been. He also travelled to India and Africa. Finally, he went to Persia and then returned home. In all, he spent 24 years away from home!

When he returned to Venice in 1295, he became a popular storyteller. People gathered at his home to hear stories of his travels in the Far East. People at the time would never have known about other countries, their people and customs if it had not been for the famous traveler Marco Polo.
