Clearly, they were some sort of bio-weapon gone wild and now roam the mangled, epochian landscape in packs of up to two dozen. They hop on their single, spring loaded leg, running down slower animals and humanoids and cleaving them apart with their lethal, velociraptorlike hooked arm-claws and razor sharp teeth. These nasty, tan-skinned, amber furred freaks are roughly man sized and will attack humans if of equal or greater number; eating up to half their own body weight in one hunt before moving off to digest their catch. Nomadic, spring-claws do not make lairs and so dont leave a deposit of relics and coin someplace specific. Having no use for material things, other than flesh, they simply leave the belongings of their victims at the feeding site. They are similar to locusts in some respects, especially in June when they gather by the hundreds for a migration to some hidden nesting ground. In such massive herds, they are capable of wiping out whole caravans or villages. A spring-claw attacks with a flurry of talon slashes and one bite per round, treated as one attack. As their name suggest, they are able to spring, either directly up six meters over a wall or onto a rooftop, or horizontally across a ravine, 12 meters. If they need to hop a low wall, such as rusted ancient automobile, they can combine their vertical and horizontal spring to travel 3m high and travel 9m. This incredible leap is often employed to jump clear over prey animals and people, cutting off their retreat, flanking and surrounding them. Being of low intelligence, they do not use technology, make anything, wear armor or speak with words, but communicate with crude grunts and chirps, allowing pack members to coorFree downloadable PDF for SOE (Society of Excavators) members area at www.mutantepoch.com . dinate ambushes, false retreats and other tactics, making them especially tricky and dangerous. They are egg layers, yet appear genderless from the outside as their reproductive organs are concealed under their orange fur. Besides their speed, agility and cunning, they have a special defensive mutation in their abnormally large, humanoid-like heads. This mutation is a mental reflector, which reflects back to the sender any mental attack, control, or intrusion. For example, if a character tries to use the mutation of mind crush on a spring-claw, the attack backfires and returns to the sender, forcing the attacker to make a type B hazard check or suffer d20 END damage and d6 INT damage. Spring-Claws can be found in any terrain, however they are terrified of deep water and unless they can leap a stream or creek, or see that the bottom is only half a meter or less deep, will not enter it, drowning in two rounds if submerged. Spring-claws are afraid of fire and wont approach a bonfire, somebody with a active flame unit, or other blaze larger than a torch.
