What is BIM?
BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building. BIM allows enhanced collaboration of a projects design team and delivers efficiencies, contributing to the overall success of a project. This takes the form of a 3D model containing families that represent physical items; from a window or door through to all types of complex products. The project file acts as a shared source of building information data, used from project initiation all the way through to a facilities life-cycle management. Prior to construction, architects, engineers and contractors can use these 3D models to evaluate, schedule and entire projects. As a result, they can identify and resolve problems early in the design phase, when decisions can have the greatest impact on cost, schedule, and sustainability. quantify
Realising the benefits BIM can offer to the construction industry, the UK Government has made a clear statement that all publicly procured projects over the value of 5M must be delivered in Level 2 BIM by 2016. With the current race to offer BIM compliance and as one of the first manufacturers to embrace the new technology architects & interior designers would be keen to download your families for use within their projects. Each family produced is an accurate 3D representation of your product and can contain any number of embedded parameters containing information such as the company name, product range, material finishes, warranty, life cycle and crucially contact details for supply and purchase. All of this information would be available to all members of the design team making your products the first port of call when purchase orders are being raised and subsequently for replacement products.
Space is an early-adopter of this emerging technology and have 8 years experience of Revit; the BIM authoring software with the greatest market share (80%). As a specialist in content creation Space is best placed to combine industry knowledge with BIM expertise to provide you with the very best families. This will allow you to reintroduce your products to the market, in appropriate formats for use in BIM. Our qualified BIM professionals create all content in-house and understand exactly what makes a good family. Before your models are released they are passed through a comprehensive QA procedure by an Autodesk Certified Professional to ensure they work as expected in a real project environment.
1. Select the Revit family (.rfa) you wish to download: 2. Ensure you download both the (.rfa) file and the corresponding (.txt) file. 3. Load the family into your current project and select your desired product.roduct
1. Open the selected Revit family. 2. Navigate to the Manage tab and click on the Materials icon. 3. In the Material Browser click on the icon and select the option Open Existing Library. Select the (.adsklib) file and load it into the browser. 4. Select the materials you wish to use and edit their properties. In the Appearance aspect ensure the image is routing to the specific (.jpeg) file from the download JPEGs with the same name. 5. Once you have the desired materials load the family into your current project. Please note: All jpegs are named accordingly to their corresponding material in Revit.
1. Upload your Revit content to your company website: We recommend creating a dedicated BIM Section on your website with thumbnail images of each product against each family download link where appropriate. You may also wish to consider website optimisation to drive Google and other search engines to your business. 2. Upload your content to popular free Revit hosting sites: Create an account and host your families on these sites for free. These three sites are the most popular within the BIM community for free file downloads. www.revitcity.com www.turbosquid.com www.bimstop.com If required Space can facilitate uploading to these website for an additional fee.
3. Distribute files directly to potential clients by post or email: Mailshot suitable existing clients and contacts to inform them about the new services you are able to provide. You may wish to search LinkedIN for BIM Managers, BIM Coordinators or BIM Technologists and ask whether they would be interested in receiving your content for their libraries. 4. Create a digital catalogue on Autodesk Seek:
Autodesk Seek is the premier BIM content hosting website, for an annual fee companies can establish a digital catalogue of all available products. With Seek, you can: - Reach design professionals using Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD software. - Syndicate your product models to your corporate website in addition to Autodesk's destinations.
- Maintain all your product models in one place and leave search, hosting and downloading to Autodesk.
