COMPETITOR BACKGROUND
Competitor background analysis in marketing and strategic management is an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This analysis provides both an offensive and defensive strategic context to identify opportunities and threats. Profiling coalesces all of the relevant sources of competitor analysis into one framework in the support of efficient and effective strategy formulation, implementation, monitoring and adjustment. Competitor background analysis is an essential component of corporate strategy. It is argued that most firms do not conduct this type of analysis systematically enough. Instead, many enterprises operate on what is called informal impressions, conjectures, and intuition gained through the tidbits of information about competitors every manager continually receives. As a result, traditional environmental scanning places many firms at risk of dangerous competitive blindspots due to a lack of robust competitor analysis. While every company must focus on building its own success, customers do compare companies when they buy. An easy-to-use format matrix format compares areas such as the marketing and messaging, sales approaches and channels, product capabilities and fit, industry successes and targets, and company capabilities. Competitor analysis can incorporate a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis for selected major players in a market. This analysis is instrumental in crafting sales and marketing approaches that differentiate your company and product and put you in the best light in sales situations. Competitor analysis can also help focus market segmentation and vertical strategy to areas where competitors are weak or not targeting their sales efforts. The three companies Ho Hup Sdn Bhd., WCT and Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd are top leading companies that compete against each other. These companies have their own management and marketing team that will closely monitor their progress along the way, and thus racing in making their companies to be the top ones in the industry.
SWOT ANALYSIS
SWOT analysis, used to be known alternatively as SWOT Matrix, is a structured planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a product, place, industry or person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies. The degree to which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept of strategic fit. Setting the objective should be done after the SWOT analysis has been performed. This would allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organization. Strengths is the characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others. The weaknesses discuss the characteristics that place the team at a disadvantage relative to others. The other trait of SWOT which is opportunities discusses the elements that the project could exploit to its advantage. Lastly, threats is the elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project.
