In one of the Masses celebrated at the beginning of our Novitiate; the celebrant rightly urged us to pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit by the Churchs teachings are received in the Sacra ent of Confir ation. The inister dips his right thu b in the chris !a holy oil) and ar"ed the sign of the cross on the fore head of the confir ed saying# be filled with the Holy Spirit, the gift of the father. $t this o ent the church teaches that the confir ed is filled %ith the gifts of the Holy Spirit& such as# 'isdo & (no%ledge& )nderstanding& Counsel& *ortitude& +iety and *ear of ,od. -y the %ise use of these seven gifts the confir ed bears good fruits li"e# patience& peaces& love& gentleness& hu ility& "indness& .oy& self/control& goodness& and so on !,al. 0#11). $ccording to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the first four gifts/ 'isdo & )nderstanding& (no%ledge and Counsel help the confir ed to fully understand the truth of our religion. The last three gifts/ *ortitude& +iety and *ear of ,od enables the confir ed %ith the grace and po%er that %ill help hi or her to do %hat ,od %ants. 'e can say that all these gifts are given& that %e ay use the %isely in helping one another to gro% in Christ !2 Corinthians 21#3)& it a"es us to re ain active e bers of the church. $lso to re ain ature and good soldier of Christ so that %e ay do good as Christ %ent about doing good !$cts 24#56). In the 7ld Testa ent& ,od pro ised his people that he %ill send the spirit on the last days !Isaiah 51#20& 8oel 5#2/1). In the Ne% Testa ent& 8esus fulfilled this pro ise !$cts 1#5/9). The spirit %as sent to us so that %e ay bear good %itnesses of the "ingdo of ,od to the end of the earth. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, throughout Samaria, even to the end of the earth ( ct !"#$ . The sacra ent of Confir ation e po%ers us %ith the ,ifts of the Holy Spirit to sho% that %e are the good soldiers of Christ on earth !1 Ti othy 1#5). 'e need to be conscious of his presence in us and get ready to carry out his ission. 'e need not to fear or asha ed to preach Christ any%here %hile %e have the Holy Spirit in us. 'e learnt in the fa ous %ords of the Scripture that %hen the $postles received the Spirit& they spo"e boldly to the people about thee risen :ord !$cts 9#52). In other %ords& they %ere filled %ith po%er and ;eal to preach the ,ood Ne%s %ithout fear. 8esus ade it clear that the Spirit is not for fear but po%er and fear of ,od. %and now & am sending down to you what the 'ather had promised. Stay in the city until the power is invested on you from above !:u"e 19#9<$. This is %hat %e receive on the day of Confir ation.
