K-5 Reading/Language Arts Lesson: The Five Senses


Context: This is a regular education kindergarten classroom. They are being introduced to the unit discussing the five senses. There are some children who have cognitive delays that are being instructed in an inclusion environment. Big Ideas/Essential Questions:
What are the five senses? How do we use our five senses?

Standards:

RL.K.1. With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. RL.K.2. With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.
RL.K.4. Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text. RL.K.5. Recognize common types of texts (e.g., storybooks, poems). RL.K.6. With prompting and support, name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role of each in telling the story. RL.K.10. Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding SL.K.1. Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. o o Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion). Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.

SL.K.2. Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood. SL.K.6. Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly

Objectives:

Students will be able to name all of the five senses. Students will be able to identify which body part connects to which sense. Students will be able to identify rhyming words.

Assessments:
Informative Students will be asked a series of questions to demonstrate that they understand the five senses. They will be asked to name each of the five senses, point to the body part responsible for each sense. Use the five senses in the proper context of sentences.

Activities and Schedule:


Students will gather on the carpet. I will sing the good morning song. I will explain to students that we will be learning about the five senses. Students will then read the poem The Five Little Senses and identify the rhyming words. I will then introduce the students to my mystery bag and allow each one of them to pick a bag. I will explain that we will be using our five senses to figure out what is in the bag. I will ask students a series of questions to activate their five senses. Next I will allow students to look in their bags and taste the popcorn. I will explain to them again that we will be learning about the five senses, and explain to them that they used their five senses to figure out what was in the bag. (15 min) I will then introduce them to the book My Five Senses We will look through the book and make predictions about what the story is about. I will then read them the book and we will have a discussion about the story (15 min).

Materials:
The Five Little Senses poem Five Senses poster. Bags of popcorn in brown paper bags Five Senses surprise box

Activate prior knowledge:


o Students will be asked to point to each of the body parts responsible for each of the five senses, and asked what they do with it.

Motivation/Hook:
o Students will be excited by trying to figure out what is in the brown paper bags. o Students will enjoy pointing to the five senses on the poster.

Extensions (Differentiation for GT, At-Risk, and ELL):


- Students with special needs will be given more time to answer questions. A consistent class routine will be established to guide them during instructions. They will be exposed to the five senses through many different experiences. Instruction will be modified to accommodate and build self-confidence through repetition and group learning. Behavior expectation will be modeled by teacher. Affirmations will be given on a consistent basis. I will extend the lesson by allowing those students to work with their peers in centers where they will be allowed to manipulate items to learn more about the five senses.
