Blitzkrieg Flying
Blitzkrieg Flying
1. INTRODUCTION
The top 15 scorers of Blitzkrieg: Design Challenge get a direct entry into this competition and can either use a new plane or the same that was used in Blitzkrieg: Design Challenge. Another 15 will be wildcard entries that will get shortlisted on the basis of abstract and video submissions.
1.1 Task 1 The competition requires the participant to perform a set of maneuvers from amongst the ones given in the table below. 2 Also listed are the maximum points each one of them hold. The participant will be awarded points against the set maximum on the basis of the smoothness and accuracy of the maneuvers performed. 3 The participants will then have to do spot landing i.e. land the plane in a defined area after completing the maneuvers. 4 The maximum time given to each participant (i.e. for engine warm-up, takeoff, maneuvering and spot landing) is 5 minutes. 5 Points will be deducted for crossing this limit and maneuvers performed or spot landing done after 5 minutes will not be given points.

Description
Downgrades Model jumps from the ground Retouches the ground after becoming airborne Steep climb angle Gallops climb in elevation during
Inside Loop
A vertical circle entered from straight and erect level flight. A positive pitching movement is used at all points in the loop to draw the circle, so that the aeroplane canopy is pointing inwards. Both the inside and outside loop are sometimes casually referred to as a 'loop the loop'. From level flight, 5/8s loop to the inverted 45 line, 1/2 roll to erect down 45 line, pull to level
Model passes behind the judges line, scored zero (0) points Loops not round Wings not level during loops Changes in during loops heading (track)
Loop segments not round with the same size and radius Model not at 45 degrees before and after half roll.
flight.
Changes in heading (track) in loop segments or after half roll Half roll not centered in 45 degree line No hesitations before or after half roll Model not level at start or finish Model deviates left or right during half loop Half loop not completed exactly above point of commencement of half loop Half roll does not commence immediately after half loop Plane deviates from a straight line during roll Model does not finish in level flight Model heading does not finish exactly opposite the direction of entry Half loop not round Model not level at start and finish Track does not become exactly vertical Model track not vertical at start and finish of stall turn Return path not parallel to entry
Immelman Turn
1/2 looping up followed by half a roll. There should be no pause between the end of the looping section and the start of the roll to erect flight.
1/4 loop (pull or push) to vertical, as momentum/airspeed decreases, rudder is applied and the aircraft rotates around its yaw axis, the nose falls through the horizon
and points towards the ground, a momentary pause is made to draw the vertical down line, and 1/4 loop to level flight.
path Pivot radius greater than wingspan Pendulum movement after stall Loop segments not round with same size and radius Model passes behind the judges line, zero (0) points Model impacts the runway due to lack of flare Model bounces Changes in track Model ends on its back, zero (0) points Model lands outside landing zone If any undercarriage retracts before the landing is complete, zero (0) points Aircraft porpoises and/or wanders during approach or flare Aircraft lands outside the landing area or runway, zero (0) points Aircraft touches down while not straight to runway and ground track
Landing
Spot Landing: 1 For spot landing, the landing zone will be marked on the ground and will be revealed only on the day of the competition. 2 The spot landing zone will be divided into sub-zones landing in each of which carries different points. 3 The point at which the touchdown happens will be judged and marks will vary depending on the accuracy of spot landing and the smoothness with which it is done. This will of course be subject to the judges opinion.
3. RULES
3.1 Competition rules:
1. A maximum time of 5 minutes will be given to complete the maneuver-set and land. 2. The timer will start from the moment the aircraft is in the air. 3. As soon as the timer signals more than 5 minutes, only the points gathered by the aircraft upto that moment are considered. For example, if the aircraft takes-off and performs an Immelman Turn only in the stipulated time, he is only eligible for 15 points at the maximum on the discretion of the judges. 3.2 General Requirements during the game: 1. Radios: The use of 2.4 GHz radio is required for all aircraft competing in the competition. 2. Metal Propellers Prohibited: Metal propellers are not allowed. 3.4 Abstract Submission: 1. All the wild-card participants need to submit an abstract on their aircraft. 2. For the wild-card teams requiring accommodation, the last date of submitting the Abstract is 15th November 2012. 3.5 Video Submission: 1. Wild-card participants have to submit a video of the working model before the competition. This video will be used to shortlist teams for the competition. Only short listed teams will be eligible to participate in Blitzkrieg: Flying Challenge at Techfest 2013. 2. The video should be an unedited clip, at least 1 minute in length, showing the aircraft taking off initially and showcasing some basic aerobatic maneuvers. 3. In the video, one of the participants from the team must demonstrate that he/she has decent flying skills for safety reasons. 4. The participants need to show their aircraft, the basic functions of their remote control, fly the aircraft with which they will be participating in the event and demonstrate its launch/take off, flight and landing.
5. The clip should preferably be in AVI or MPEG format. If any other format is used, please attach appropriate video plug-ins to ensure that the organizers can run the video properly.
6. The teams have to do either an online submission or an offline submission. For online submissions, participants need to mail us the soft copy of abstract (PDF format) and the video. For offline submissions, participants need to send us a printed copy of abstract and a CD/DVD containing the video. The CD and the printed abstract have to be couriered in a single envelope to the postal address: Techfest Office, Student Gymkhana, IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai-76, India. The last date of submitting the portfolio is 25th of November 2012.
7. An email will be sent to the team leader confirming the reception of the entry. 8. Techfest 2013 is not responsible for any postal/courier delays, so participants are encouraged to send their entries well in advance to ensure receipt before the last date. 9. The video submission is mandatory for all participants due to safety concerns. All wild-card participants who are able to show their basic flying skills in the video will be allowed to participate in the competition. Note: The entrant teams from Blitzkrieg: Design Challenge need not submit the video and abstract. However, they must if they want to participate in Blitzkrieg: Flying Challenge anyway.
4. JUDGING CRITERIA
4.1 Scoring The scoring will be completely subject to the judges opinion. For the maneuvers, the number given in brackets is the maximum that a participant can secure and will therefore be awarded partial marks based on how smoothly and accurately that particular maneuver is executed. For spot landing, the landing zone will be marked on the ground and marks will be awarded based on the accuracy of spot landing and marks for landing will be based on how smoothly it is done. Score = Take-off(5) + Inside Loop(10) + Half-Cuban Eight(10) + Immelmann Turn(10) + Hammer Head(10) + Landing(5) + Spot Landing(10)
4.2 Certificate Policy Certificates of Excellence will be awarded to all teams who are in the top 3 positions. Certificates of Participation will be given to all the teams. 4.3 Team Specifications A team can consist of a maximum of 4 participants. Students from different educational institutes can form a team. 4.4 Eligibility: All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate in Blitzkrieg: Flying Challenge at Techfest 2013
