Thoracentesis is a procedure to remove fluid from the space between the lining of the outside of the lungs (pleura) and the wall of the chest. It can be performed for diagnostic or treatment purposes. Materials needed include an I&D kit, syringes, needles of various gauges, and contrast. The procedure involves finding the anatomical landmarks, cleaning the area, preparing equipment and needles, administering local anesthesia, inserting the catheter needle into the pleural space and aspirating fluid into vacutum bottles for analysis. Nurses are responsible for explaining the procedure, positioning and monitoring the client, collecting samples, and documenting outcomes.
