5S is the

Work Place Organisation Method

Its a Japanese Concept & each S Stands for

Sort / Segregate Set in Order / Systematic 2nd S Arrangement 3rd S 4th S 5th S Super Clean / Shine Standardise Self-Discipline / Sustain

1st S Sort / Segregate


Segregate the things on the basis of parameters like USABLE, REQUIRED, NON-USABLE (i.e. under breakdown) & NOT REQUIRED along with size, shape, application & type of material and Remove not required things from works place, whereas correct the required things which are under breakdown.

2nd S Set in Order / Systematic Arrangement


Decide the place of an object on the basis of parameters like use, size, shape, weight, frequency of retrieval of an object.

Follow PEEP i.e. make Place for Everything and keep Everything at its Place, and keep the place/things identified, locatable 7 accessible.

3rd S Super Clean / Shine


Clean the work place regularly as decided and keep the work place neat and clean.

Keep in mind housekeeping is not the only objective but is the result of 5S.

4th S Standardise
This S is to be implemented to promote interchangeability.
Create a mechanism like checklists to identify required things / missing things easily. Decide the area wise responsibility for maintaining things like segregation, orderliness & Cleanliness.

5th S Self-Discipline / Sustain


This S is to be implemented to ensure disciplined adherence to rules and procedures to prevent backsliding. Be self-motivated periodically. and raise the bar

Define area wise frequency, responsibility of review & review the things against checklist.

Everybody needs to co-operate for audits to be taken place in accordance with 5S check points We need to comply actions within time, planned to overcome the findings in audit & improvements suggested by staff System will sustain once it starts to deliver the benefits, but till then we need to keep the things rolling
