About the course

The study of Physics allows us to understand the world around us. It is crucial to explaining what the world is made up of and how it ts together. Throughout the duration of the course you will acquire numerical, analytical and problemsolving skills, all of which are sought after by numerous employers. Furthermore, the Physics department runs a trip to CERN to see the Large Hadron Collider every two years. The AS course aims to help you develop your practical skills whilst covering the topics of particles and radiation, current electricity, mechanics, materials and waves. At A2 you will have the chance to build on these practical skills and develop your knowledge of mechanics, alongside exploring the topics of gravitation, magnetic elds, radioactivity, thermal physics and cosmology.

How will I be assessed?

There are six units in the specication three at AS and three at A2. Four of the units are assessed by external examinations, in the summer terms. There are two units assessing investigative and practical skills. These can be completed via a teacher-assessed or examiner-assessed route. The examinations contribute 80% to the nal grade and the practical work contributes 20%.

Additional minimum entry requirements:

B in GCSE Physics or GCSE Additional Science.

Course breakdown
At AS Level students cover familiar subjects in more depth: mechanics, materials and waves, and exciting new topics: particles, quantum phenomena and electricity. At A2, students are introduced to topics including elds and further mechanics and choose from options, including astrophysics, medical physics, applied physics and turning points in physics. AS: Unit 1 - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity Unit 2 - Mechanics, Materials and Waves Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Physics A2: Unit 4 - Fields and Further Mechanics Unit 5 - Nuclear and Thermal Physics and Astrophysics Unit 6 - Investigative and Practical Skills in A2 Physics

Is this course for me?

Physics is suitable for those with a logical and numerate mind, excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work integrally as part of a team, alongside being able to communicate effectively in practical situations.

Where can it take me?

A Level Physics is a traditional A Level subject and is identied as a key facilitating subject by the Russell Group of Universities. Physics is a solid choice for students considering a career in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Computing, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Environmental Science. Physics will also prepare students for industry careers, such as those within the Engineering or Electronics sectors. Previous students have gone on to study Physics and other related courses at university level, as well as Medicine, Pharmacy and Computer Science. 29
