EXCEL BASICS #8: CELL REFERENCES RELATIVE & ABSOLUTE


For optimum benefits, you really want to work this assignment as you watch the video. This document follows the speaker as you work the steps. 1. Open ExcelBasics.xls from e-Chalk 2. You will want to go to the Windows button and click on Save As 3. Save the file in your folder (or on your USB drive) as ExcelBasics

FIRST EXAMPLE
4. You will want to find the Grade Percentages for the students in this class: a. In cell C3, type the formula =B3/B2. What is in cell C3? _____________________ b. Copy the formula down one cell using the fill handle (little black box in the lower left hand corner of the active cell). Click on cell C4, what is the formula in this cell? ___________________ c. Is this the formula you want?___________________________ d. Click on C3, put your cursor in the cell reference B2 in the formula and click on the F4 key on your keyboard once. Fill in the table below each time you click F4: What does the F4 Clicks What kind of reference is it? reference look like? Click F4 the first time Click F4 the second time Click F4 the third time Click F4 the fourth time e. Click the F4 Button until you get the mixed reference that holds the row. f. Double-Click on the Fill handle to copy it all the way down. g. What is the formula in cell C9 (please refer to the formula bar)? _______________________________ 5. Click on the save button.

6. In the cell F2, type the formula that will increase revenues each month by 10%. The formula will look like this: =E2*F4 7. Click on the cell reference F4 in the formula you just typed and then click the F4 button until you have a mixed cell reference that holds the column (3 times) 8. Use the fill handle to copy the formula to the right to the cell I2. 9. What is the formula in cell I2? ______________________________________________ 10. Click on the save button.

11. Highlight range G13:L21 (Click and hold in G13 and drag your cursor down to L21, release mouse button) 12. Make sure that the active cell is G13, it should be the only one highlighted the rest of the range will be grayed out. 13. In G13 (the active cell as discussed above) type the formula =FV(G12, F13, F23). Click on the check mark by the formula bar. 14. Click on the cell reference G12 in the formula you just typed. You want this cell reference to be mixed with the row held, write down what the cell reference should look like: _____________ Click F4 on the keyboard until the cell reference looks right. 15. Click on the cell reference F13 in the formula. You want this cell reference to be mixed with the column held, write down what the cell reference should look like: _______________Click F4 on the keyboard until the cell reference looks right. 16. Click on the cell reference F23 in the formula you have been working on. You want this cell reference to be absolute, write down what the cell reference should look like: ______________Click F4 on the keyboard until the cell reference looks right. 17. What does the formula in G13 look like now? __________________________________________________ 18. Hold down CTRL and click on ENTER 19. The complete range should be populated with your formula 20. Click in Cell L21. What is the formula that is in the cell? _________________________________________ 21. The number in cell F23 should be a negative number. Click on cell F23, click on the F2 button, then put a minus sign in front of the number that is there. 22. Save your work again and close it
