General Usability Issues If you use multiple flowsheet sections and choose to hide some of them on the flowsheet, then attempt to move the icon representing a stream flowing into the hidden section, Aspen Plus may crash. Sometimes property tables which reference streams are not regenerated after making changes to a run.
Workaround/Comment
This happens when the changes you make are handled via an Edit Run. To force the tables to update, reinitialize the simulation and re-run it. You can turn off Interactively Load Results on the Tools | Options | Run tab to ensure this is always updated. Avoid using the period character (.) in filenames except before the actual file extension. Copy the Aspen Plus file to a writable folder and open it from this location before using it with Aspen Energy Analyzer.
If you use a filename which includes extra dots (such as file.name.bkp), some functions may not work. When you attempt to use Aspen Energy Analyzer from an Aspen Plus run in which you opened a file from a nonwritable folder, Aspen Energy Analyzer will crash.
If, in Aspen Simulation Workbook, you run an Aspen Plus case with Economic Analysis active, and that case fails to converge, Economic Analysis does not run but Aspen Simulation Workbook may hang while waiting for economic results. In the Find Variables dialog box for the Custom Tables feature, the search capability does not work. Aspen Plus might crash If you enter an invalid plant data URL. If you add a variable which is displayed in a grid of results with only a common unit of measure for the whole column of data (as in RadFrac profiles) to a custom table, and then change the unit for that variable from the custom table, the value converts to the new units both in the custom table and in the grid, but in the grid there is no indication of the new units. The variable will be displayed in a different unit in the grid than the rest of its column of data. You can add variables to Custom Tables from the tree view of the Find Variables dialog box, or by copying and pasting them form forms, etc. Set the URL after saving your work and use Save As Default so that the URL only needs to be entered once. Avoid doing this and be aware of this possibility when using custom tables. You can reset the units for the grid column by changing them to any other unit, then changing the back.

General Usability Issues Plant View: HYSYS might crash if you enter an invalid plant data URL. HYSYS Equation Oriented (HYSYS EO): Some pages in the EO block forms do not show correctly, e.g. Local Scripts and Script Methods. Synchronization was found to fail in some cases. When selecting a language that uses the comma decimal separator in Windows Regional Settings, Aspen HYSYS still keeps the dot as the decimal separator. The Animated Tutorials link in the Aspen HYSYS Start Page incorrectly points to the Aspen Plus Animated Tutorials page.
Workaround or Comment Set the URL after saving your work and use Save As Default so that the URL only needs to be entered once. No workaround
No workaround
Workaround: Click Support Center in the Aspen HYSYS Start Page. Then in the Support Center page select the Aspen HYSYS link and then the Animated Tutorials Link.

General Usability Issues Some very large reactor models fail to load because of memory issues.
Workaround or Comment We recommend to use Windows 7 64 bit and for XP machines to set the 3GB Option. This may resolve some of the issues.

General Usability Issues CQ00392063 Labels are missing in Headings / Remarks In Input | Problem Definition | Headings/Remarks, the labels such as Company:, Location:, Service of Unit:, etc., are missing for new cases. Affects all EDR applications. CQ00397130 File-Open crashes if EDR has exported to Excel. Affects all EDR applications. CQ00404319 Process conditions should be grayed out, as they are determined by the relevant information from Aspen Plus interface. CQ00479429 When the embedded EDR browser in Aspen Plus has input focus
Workaround or Comment Select Tools | Program Settings, Headings/Drawing tab and click OK. This only need be done one time; thereafter, the labels are present.
If an EDR file has been exported to Excel and then File-Open is selected, EDR will crash. The workaround is to export to Excel and then close and reopen EDR. Any user changes to process conditions within the embedded EDR Browser will be overwritten by the next Aspen Plus run. Open a different tab before starting the Aspen Plus run.
21
General Usability Issues during the Aspen Plus simulation run, the run status changes to Input changed. CQ00485626 AspenPlus.exe remains in memory if you close the EDR Sizing Console using the window close (X) button.
Workaround or Comment
This will cause files to be locked and cause problems in subsequent Aspen Plus runs. The workaround is to close the EDR Sizing Console using the Cancel button.

General Usability Issues The Advanced method is not yet available for kettles. Affects Shell&Tube Exchanger. Nozzles on the side of an exchanger, as against on the top or bottom, are not correctly displayed on the Setting Plan. The Example Files provided with the program have exchanger materials (and other text strings) omitted from the output. Shell & Tube crashes when printing for X and K shells. Affects Shell&Tube Exchanger
Workaround or Comment None. The Standard Method gives well proven results.

2. On a Windows 7 machine, the API current version does not change at runtime (as it does on an XP machine). Thus, once ACCE V8.0 is installed, this will become the default/current EE API version. If users desire to run the Spreadsheet Import/Export feature in V7.3.2, the V7.3.2 ICAPICOM.dll will need to be re-registered. This can be done via the following steps: a. b. Close all Economic Evaluation programs. Open the command prompt as an administrator. NOTE: It is not sufficient to have administrator privileges. The User has to right click on the DOS shell application to run as administrator.

c.
Browse to the EE V7.3.2 Program\Sys directory: E.G.: \Program Files(x86)\AspenTech\Economic Evaluation V7.3.2\Program\Sys. Run the command: regsvr32 icapicom.dll A message dialog saying DLL register server was successful etc. should be obtained.
d. e.
f. Open V7.3.2 and run spreadsheet import/export. Note: follow the same instructions to re-register V8.0 as the current API version (except run the command from the V8.0 Sys directory).

General Usability Issues CQ 404999 Source media may be required when Resiliency is triggered. The software will trigger Resiliency to configure the application for a new or Restricted user on a machine. This will occur the first time any EE application is launched (by the user) and will not occur again once it has successfully completed. Thus, in order for the system to behave as designed, it is important to let the Resiliency process complete. Under normal situations, Resiliency can be completed without requiring the Source Media from which the application was installed from. However, there have been complications where a request is made during the Resiliency Process for the source media. During testing, we have determined potential cause for the source media requirement. If another user on the same machine ran MS Excel from within the EE system, even if the Excel spreadsheet is merely opened and closed without saving, some file attributes change in Excel that cause the installer to think the installation has changed (the attributes that are changed are invisible to the user). Once this happens, the source media requirement is made by the installer. The root cause of this issue is a Microsoft Excel 2003 design issue (it does not happen with Word 2003 or Excel 2007) and cannot be fully addressed within the application or installer. As a reference, the following MS KB link describes the Excel behavior. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840169 CQ 485811 This is a documentation issue: The COA's for Communication and Alarm systems need to be updated in the Icarus Reference Guide (CODE of ACCOUNTS chapter Page 34-15). 781 Telephone System 782 Public Addess Gen. Alarm 783 Intrusion Det. System 784 Access Control System 785 Closed Circuit TV 786 Radio Systems 787 Area Network Systems 788 Meteorological Systems In addition, the following Subytype needs to be added to the DATABASE RELATIONS chapter page 35-47. 650 PAGA system cabinets
Workaround or Comment If the source media is available, the user should make it available during this process. This media can be the download location, network drive, or DVD (when available). If the source media is not available, the original user that ran MS Excel from the EE application will need to run the same test (under the original account). If the Reporter was run, the user should open the corresponding template xls file in Excel and save the file (w/o any changes). This will change the time stamp on the file and the installer will ignore it when the Resiliency process is run. The Excel template files are located in: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\AspenTech\Shared Economic Evaluation V8.0\Reporter\Templates

CQ - 467389 Running any Decision Analyzer Utility Module AUM (e.g. Cooling Water or Instrument Air) on a machine having Microsoft Office 64 bit installed is not supported in EE V8.0. This feature is functional on 64 bit Operating Systems (e.g. Windows 7 64 bit) with Microsoft Office 32 bit installed.

Running Economics from Aspen Plus or HYSYS V8.0 for the first time may result in the following error:
Shutdown Aspen Plus or HYSYS V8.0. Launch APEA V8.0 and let the program configuration (i.e. Resiliency) complete. After Resiliency has completed, shutdown APEA and launch either Aspen Plus or HYSYS V8.0 and resume desired
workflow.
CQ - 486287 For a custom pipe spec with sanitary pipe material (304PS, 316PS), incorrect warning messages for flange type are generated during project scan even when the flange type fields in the spec are blank (no input).
The warning messages will not get generated if user specifies lap flange type (B) for each diameter break in the sanitary pipe custom pipe spec.
WARN > 'EXT4' WARNING IN THE EXTERNAL PIPE SPEC FILE, FOR SPEC:304PS X-SMALL : FOR SANITARY PIPE MATL. ONLY LAP FLANGE IS ALLOWED INPUT WILL BE IGNORED. WARN > 'EXT4' WARNING IN THE EXTERNAL PIPE SPEC FILE, FOR SPEC:304PS SMALL : FOR SANITARY PIPE MATL. ONLY LAP FLANGE IS ALLOWED INPUT WILL BE IGNORED. WARN > 'EXT4' WARNING IN THE EXTERNAL PIPE SPEC FILE, FOR SPEC:304PS MEDIUM : FOR SANITARY PIPE MATL. ONLY LAP FLANGE IS ALLOWED INPUT WILL BE IGNORED. WARN > 'EXT4' WARNING IN THE EXTERNAL PIPE SPEC FILE, FOR SPEC:304PS LARGE : FOR SANITARY PIPE MATL. ONLY LAP FLANGE IS ALLOWED INPUT WILL BE IGNORED. WARN > 'EXT4' WARNING IN THE EXTERNAL PIPE SPEC FILE, FOR SPEC:304PS X-LARGE : FOR SANITARY PIPE MATL. ONLY LAP FLANGE IS ALLOWED INPUT WILL BE IGNORED.
The warning messages do not prevent the project evaluation or use of the custom pipe spec. The pipe spec gets applied correctly.

General Usability Issues While working in a created worksheet for a component, there may be duplicate materials listed in the corresponding materials drop-down list (e.g. 2 selections for 304L). CQ 450680 In Foreign Operating systems (e.g. German Windows), the instrumentation bulk sheet will not show dependent scrolls for sensor type, sensor element type.
Workaround or Comment NA. This is a result of flattening the subscroll material lists from the ACCE GUI. Selecting either material instance is acceptable. Use the pivot table embedded in the instrumentation worksheet as a guide for entering the desired sensor type/sensor element type values.

General Usability Issues On Windows 7 remote desktops, some APBD dialog boxes might not show the complete label for a field. On Windows 7 remote desktops, certain atoms connected at an angle in molecular structures might not be displayed in the structure. When generating Operating Instructions using a user template, Word might apparently freeze on responding to pop up message: Some errors occurred while generating the document Would you like to view the error log now? The actual text will not be visible but the file is still generated in the expected location.
Workaround or Comment On your remote Win7 desktop, change to Windows 7 Classic Theme using Control Panel | Appearance and Personalization | Personalization. When running a batch including vapor emissions calculations using Aspen Properties, a software crash may happen. The top level Online Help only shows the top level Index and Searches will only find keywords contained at the top level, rather than finding entries in every topic of the Online Help. When moving to different topics in the Contents tab, the Index and keyword search will only find entries contained in those topics. There is an Alias field in the Pure Component Editor that may be edited by the user. This Alias is used to identify the component in the Aspen Properties databanks and must therefore match a value in those databanks. If the user enters an Alias that is not known by Aspen Properties, the component will be treated as a user component and no parameters available, unless they are entered in the Pure Component Dialog. If the user entered Alias contains invalid characters for Aspen Properties, the software may crash.
Run the batch again without deleting the Aspen Properties files that were generated in the working folder.
Use the Contents to navigate through the online help, or making local searches under the relevant topic.
The Alias is usually filled in when selecting a component from the Aspen Properties databanks. If the information is entered manually instead, the user must be aware of the above and ensure that no invalid characters are entered. Please observe Aspen Properties rules. If the user intends to use a component from the Aspen Properties databanks and is not sure of what its Alias may be, it is useful to start Aspen Properties, use the Component Search Wizard and check the component Alias retrieved

General Usability Issues When using Simulation Importer to import a HYSYS simulation, the connection times out and not all of the data is imported. For a typical V8.0 Aspen Basic Engineering installation where only the End User Tools have been installed, the Drawing Editor Copy and Cut operations will fail to copy the selected region to the clipboard. Paste will return an error indicating that there is nothing to paste.
Workaround or Comment Open HYSYS one time before importing any simulations to initialize APED.
Use the Symbol Replication Tool, i.e., run ZyqadSymbolsReplication.exe in UserServices\bin, to copy the symbol library to the client system.

General Usability Issues Aspen OTS V8.0 can stop working when uninstalling Aspen OTS V7.3.
Workaround or Comment Contact Aspentech Customer Support for more information how to repair the V8.0 installation.
Workaround or Comment On Windows 2008 Server, project files created in certain locations (e.g. C:\) do not have sufficient default permissions in order to allow Aspen OnLine to update database files. It is recommended that project files are created and stored in the Aspen OnLine working directory. This location is C:\AspenTech\AspenOnLineV8.0. Alternatively, ensure that the project folder has full access for all users in order for Aspen OnLine to function properly.
