BRICK WORK

1.1 BRICKS / BRICK TILES / BRICK BATS


Brcks used n the masonry may be of the foowng type
(a) COMMON BURNT CLAY BRICKS
Sha be hand mouded or machne mouded. They sha be free
from modues of free me, vsbe cracks, faws warpage and
organc matter, have a frog 100 mm n ength 40 mm n wdth
and 10 mm to 20 mm deep on one of ts fat sdes. Brcks may
be extruson process and brck tes any not be provded wth
frogs. Each brck sha be marked (n the frog where provded)
wth the manufacturers dentfcaton mark or ntas.
(b) FLY ASH LIME BRICK
Sha be sound, compact and unform n shape free from vsbe
cracks, warpages faws and organc matter, have a frog 100 mm
n ength, 40 mm wdth and 10 to 20 mm deep on one of ts fat
sde. The shape and sze of the frog sha conform to IS : 12894.
FLY ASH : Sha conform to grade 1 or grade 2 of
IS : 3812
BOTTOM ASH : Used as repacement of sand sha not have
more than 12% oss on gnton when
tested.
SAND : Deeterous materas, such as cay and st
n the sand preferaby be ess than 5%.
LIME : Sha conform to cass C hydrated me of
IS : 712.
ADDITIVES : Any sutabe addtve consdered not
detrmenta to the durabty of brcks may
be used.
(c) CLAY FLY ASH BRICKS
The cay fy ash brcks sha be sound, compact and unform n
shape and coour. Brcks sha have smooth rectanguar faces
wth sharp and square corners. The brcks sha be free from
vsbe cracks, faws, warpage, nodues of free me and organc
matter. The brcks sha be hand or machne mouded. The
brcks sha have frog of 100 mm n ength and 40mm wdth and
10 to 20 mm deep on one of ts fat sdes.

(d) Fy ash sha conform to grade 1 or grade 2 of IS : 3812.
CALCIUM SILICATE BRICKS
Cacum Scate Brcks sha be sound, compact and unform n
shape. Brcks sha be free from vsbe cracks, warpage organc
matter, arge pebbes and nodues of free me. Brcks sha be
sod and wth or wthout frog. The brcks sha be made of fney
grounded sand sceous rock and me. In addton mted
quantty of fy ash conformng to IS : 3812 may be used n the
mx.
(e) TILE BRICK :
The brcks of 4 cm heght sha be mouded wthout frogs. Where
moduar tes are not freey avaabe n the market, the te
brcks of F.P.S. thckness 44 mm (1 - 3/4") sha be used uness
otherwse specfed.
(a) BRICK BATS : Brckbats sha be obtaned from
we - burnt brcks.
1.1.1 DIMENSIONS :
The brck may be mouded or non - moduar. Szes for both types
of brcks / tes sha be per tabe 1 whe use of moduar brcks /
tes s recommended, non-moduar (FPS) brcks / tes can aso
be used where so specfed. Non - moduar brcks / tes of szes
other than the szes mentoned n Tabe 1 may aso be used
where specfed.

1.1.3 SAMPLING AND TESTS
Sampes of brcks sha be sub|ected to the foowng tests

1.1.3.1 SAMPLING
For carryng out compressve strength, water absorpton,
efforescence and dmensona tests, the sampe of the brcks
sha be taken at random accordng to the sze of the ot as gven
n Tabe 3. The sampe thus taken sha be stored n a dry pace
unt tests are made. For the purpose of sampng, the foowng
defnton sha appy

(a) LOT
A coecton of brcks of same cass and sze, manufactured
under reatvey smar condtons of producton. For the
purpose of sampng a ot sha contan a maxmum of 50,000
brcks.
In case a consgnment has brcks more than 50,000 of the same
cassfcaton and sze and manufactured under reatvey smar
condtons of producton, t sha be dvded nto ots of 50,000
brcks or part thereof.
(b) SAMPLE
A coecton of brcks seected for nspecton and / or testng from
a t to reach the decson regardng the acceptance or re|ecton
of the ot.
(c) DEFECTIVE
A brck fang to meet one or more of the specfed
requrements.
1.1.3.2 The sampe sha be taken as beow
() SAMPLING FROM A STACK
When t s necessary to take a sampe from a stack, the stack
sha be dvded nto a number of rea or magnary sectons and
the requred number of brcks drawn from each secton. For ths
purpose brcks n the upper ayers of the stack sha be removed
to enabe unts to be samped from paces wthn the stack.
Note : For other methods of sampng .e. sampng n
moton and sampng from orres or trucks, IS : 5454
may be referred.
Scae of sampng and crtera for conformty for vsua and
dmensona characterstcs
VISUAL CHARACTERISTICS :
The brcks sha be seected and nspected for ascertanng ther
conformty to the requrements of the reevant specfcaton.
The number of brcks to be seected from a ot sha depend on
the sze o f ot and sha be n accordance of co. 1 and 2 of
tabe 3 for vsua characterstcs n a cases and dmensona
characterstcs, f specfed for ndvdua brcks.

(II) VISUAL CHARACTERISTICS
A the brcks seected above n accordance wth co.1 and 2 of
tabe 3 sha be examned for vsua characterstcs. If the
number of defectve brcks found n the sampe s ess than or
equa to the correspondng number as specfed n co. 3 of tabe
3 the ot sha be consdered as satsfyng the requrements of
vsua characterstcs, otherwse, the ot sha be deemed as not
havng met the vsua requrements.
() DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
The number of brcks to be seected for nspectng the
dmensons and toerance sha be n accordance wth co. 1 a d4
of tabe 3. These brcks w be dvded nto groups of 20 brcks at
random and each of the group of 20 brcks thus formed w be
tested for a the dmensons and toerances. A ot sha be
consdered havng found meetng the requrements of
dmensons and toerance f none of the groups of brcks
nspected fas to meet the specfed requrements.

(v) Scae of sampng and crtera for physca characterstcs
The ot whch has been found satsfactory n respect of vsua
and dmensona requrements sha be next tested for physca
characterstcs ke compressve strength, water absorpton,
efforescence as specfed n reevant matera specfcaton. The
brcks for ths purpose sha be taken at random from those
aready seected above. The number of brcks to be seected for
each of these characterstcs sha be n accordance wth
reevant coumns of Tabe 4.

physca characterstcs f the condton stpuated here n are a
satsfed.
(a) From the test resuts for compressve strength the average sha
be cacuated and sha satsfy the requrements specfed n
reevant matera specfcaton.
Note : In case of the test resuts for compressve strength
exceeds the upper mt for the cass of brcks, the same
sha be mted to the upper mt of the cass for the
purpose of averagng.
(b) Wherever specfed n the matera specfcaton, the
compressve strength of any ndvdua brcks tested n the
sampe sha not fa beow the mnmum average compressve
strength specfed for the correspondng cass of brcks by more
than 20 percent.

(c) From the test resuts of water absorpton, the average for the
brcks n the sampe sha be cacuated and sha satsfy the
reevant requrements specfcaton n matera specfcaton.
(d) The number of brcks fng to satsfy the requrements of the
efforescence specfed n the reevant specfcaton shoud not
be more than the permssbe no of defectves gven n coumn 3
of Tabe 4.
1.1.3.3 DIMENSION TOLERANCES :
The dmensons of, moduar brcks when tested sha be
wthn the foowng mts per 20 brcks.
Length : 362 to 388 cm (380 8 cm)

In case of non - moduar brcks, % age toerance w be 2% for
group of 20 numbers of cass. 10 brcks and 4%for other cass
of brcks.
1.1.3.4 COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH :
The brcks when tested n accordance wth the procedure
ad down sha have a mnmum average compressve
strength for varous casses as gven n Tabe 2. The
compressve strength of any ndvdua brck tested sha
not fa beow the mnmum average compressve strength
specfed for the correspondng cass of brck by more than
20%. In case compressve strength of any ndvdua brck
tested exceeds the upper mt specfed n Tabe 2 for the
correspondng cass of brcks, the same sha be mted to
upper mt of the cass as specfed n Tabe 2 for the
purpose of cacuatng the average compressve strength.
1.1.3.5 WATER ABSORPTION
The average water absorpton of brcks when tested n
accordance wth the procedure ad down n appendx sha
be not more than 20% be weght.

1.1.3.6 EFFLORESCENCE
The ratng of efforescence of brcks when tested n
accordance wth the procedure ad down sha be not more
than moderate.
1.2 BRICK WORK
1.2.1 CLASSIFICATION
The brck work sha be cassfed accordng to the cass
desgnaton of brcks used.
1.2.2 MORTAR
The mortar for the brck work sha be specfed, and
conform to accepted standards. Lme sha not be used
where renforcement s provded n brck work.
1.2.3 SOAKING OF BRICKS
Brcks sha be soaked n water before use for a perod for
the water to |ust penetrate the whoe depth of the brcks.
Aternatvey brcks may be adequatey soaked n stacks by
profusey sprayng wth cean water at reguar ntervas for
a perod not ess than sx hours. The brcks requred for
masonry work usng mud mortar sha not be soaked. When
the brcks are soaked they sha be removed form the tank
suffcenty eary so that at the tme of ayng they are skn
- dry. Such soaked brcks sha be stacked on a cean
pace where they are not agan spoed by drt earth, etc.,
Note - I : The perod of soakng may be easy found at ste by
a fed test n whch the brcks are soaked n water for
dfferent perods and then broken to fnd the extent
of water penetraton. The east perod that
corresponds to compete soakng w be the one to
be aowed for n constructon work.
Note - II : If the brcks are soaked for the requred tme n water
that s frequenty changed the soube sat n the
brcks w be eached out, and subsequenty
efforescence w be reduced.

1.2.4 LAYING
1.2.4.1 Brcks sha be ad n Engsh Bond uness otherwse
specfed. For brck work n haf brck wa, brcks sha be
ad n stretcher bond. Haf or cut brcks sha not be used
except as coser where necessary to compete the bond.
Cosers n such cases, sha be used preferaby n a
courses n cured pan for ensurng better agnment.
Note : Header bond sha aso be used n foundaton footngs,
uness thckness of was (wdth of footng ) makes the use
of header mpractcabe. Where thckness of footng s
unform for a number of courses, the top course of footng
sha be headers.
1.2.4.2 A oose materas, drt and set umps of mortar whch may
be yng over the surface on whch brck work s to be ad
on a fu bed or mortar, sha be removed wth a wre brush
and surface wetted. Brcks sha be ad on a fu bed of
mortar, when ayng, each brck sha, be propery bedded
and set n poston by genty pressng wth the hande of a
trowe. Its nsde face sha be buttered wth mortar before
the next brck s ad and pressed aganst t. |onts sha be
fuy fed and packed wth mortar such that no hoow
spaces are eft nsde the |onts.
1.2.4.3 The was sha be taken up truy n pumb or true to the
requred batter where specfed. A courses sha be ad
truy horzonta and a vertca |onts sha be truy vertca.
Vertca |onts n the aternate course sha come drecty
one over the other. Ouon, |ambs and other anges sha be
propery pumbed as the work proceeds. Care sha be
taken to keep the pretends propery agned wthn
foowng maxmum permssbe toerances.
(a) Devaton from vertca wthn a storey sha not exceed 6
mm per 3m heght.
(b) Devaton n vertcaty n tota heght of any wa of
budng more than one storey n heght sha not exceed
12.5 mm.
(c) Devaton from poston shown on pan of any brck work
sha not exceed 12.5 mm.
(d) Reatve dspacement between oad bearng wa n
ad|acent storeys ntended to be vertca agnments sha
not exceed 6mm.

(e) A set of toos comprsng of wooden straght edge, Masonc
sprt eves, square, 1 metre rue ne and pumb sha be
kept on the ste of work for every 3 masons for proper
check durng the progress of work.
1.2.4.4 A quons sha be accuratey constructed and the heght of
brck courses sha be kept unform. Ths w be checked
usng graduated wooden straght edge or storey rod
ndcatng heght of each course ncudng thckness of
|onts. The poston of damp proof course, wndow ss,
bottom of ntes, top of the wa, etc., aong the heght of
the wa sha be marked on the graduated straght edge or
storey rod. Acute and obtuse quons sha be bonded,
where practcabe n the same way as square quons.
Obtuse quons sha be formed wth squnt showng three
quarters brck on one face and quarter brck on the other.
1.2.4.5 The brck work sha be but n unform ayers.
No part of the wa durng ts constructon sha rse more
than one meter above the genera constructon eve. Parts
of wa eft at dfferent eves sha be raked back at an
ange of 45

or ess wth the horzonta. Toughng sha not
be permtted as an aternatve to rakng back. For haf brck
partton to be keyed nto man was, ndents sha be eft

1.2.4.6 A ppe fttngs and specas, spouts, hod fasts and other
fxtures whch are requred to be but nto the was sha
be embedded, as specfed, n ther correct poston as the
work proceeds uness otherwse drected by the Engneer-
n-Charge.
1.2.4.7 Top courses of a pnths, parapet steps and top of was
beow foor and roof sabs sha be ad wth brck on edge,
uness specfed otherwse. Brck on edge ad n the top
courses at corner of was sha be propery radated and
keyed nto poston to form cut (maru) corners. Where
brcks cannot be cut to the requred shape to form cut
(maru) corners, cement concrete 1:2:4 (1 cement : 2
coarse : 4 graded stone aggregate 20mm nomna sze)
equa to thckness of course sha be provded n eu of cut
brcks.
1.2.4.8 Brcks sha be ad wth frog (where provded) up.
However, when top course s exposed, brcks sha be ad
wth frog down, for the brcks to be ad wth frog down, the
frog sha be fed wth mortar before pacng the brck n
poston.

1.2.4.9 In case of was one brck thck and under, one face sha
kept even and n proper pane, whe the other face may be
sghty rough. In case of was more than one brck thck,
both the faces sha be kept even and n proper pane.
1.2.4.10 To factate takng servce nes ater wthout excessve
cuttng competed work, seeves (to be pad separatey)
sha be provded, where specfed, whe rasng the brck
work. Such seeves n externa was sha be soped down
outward so as to avod passage of water nsde.
1.2.4.11 Top of the brckwork n copng and ss n externa was
sha be sghty tted. Where brck copng and ss are
pro|ectng beyond the face of the wa, drp course /
throatng (to be pad separatey) sha be provded where
ndcated.
1.2.4.12 Care sha be taken durng constructon that edges of
|ambs, ss and pro|ectons are not damaged n case or
ran. New but work sha be covered wth gunny bags or
tarpaun so as to prevent the mortar from beng washed
away. Damage, f any, sha be made good to the
satsfacton of the Engneer-n-Charge.
1.2.4.13 Vertca renforcement n the form of bars (MS or hgh
strength deformed bars), consdered necessary at the
corners and |unctons of was and |amb openng doors,
wndows etc., sha be encased wth cement mortar not
eaner than 1:4 (1 cement : 4 coarse sand) or cement
concrete mx as specfed. The renforcement sha be
sutaby ted, propery embedded n the foundaton and at
roof eve. The da of bars sha not be ess than 8 mm and
concrete grade : sha be mnmum 1:3:6 (1 cement : 3
coarse sand : 6 graded stone aggregate 20 mm nomna
sze).
1.2.4.14 In retanng was and the ke, where water s key to
accumuate, weep hoes, 50 to 75 mm square sha be
provded at 2 m vertcay and horzontay uness
otherwse specfed. The owest weep hoe sha be at
about 30 cm above the ground eve. A weep hoes sha
be surrounded by oose stones and sha have suffcent fa
to dran out the water qucky (Note : Work of provdng
oose stone w be payabe extra).

1.2.4.15 Work of cuttng chases, wherever requred to be made n
the was for housng G.I. ppe, CI ppe or any other fxtures
sha be carred out n varous ocatons as per gudenes
gven beow:
(a) Cuttng of chases n one brck thck and above oad bearng
was.
() As far as possbe servces shoud be panned wth the hep
of vertca chases horzonta chases shoud be avoded.
() The depths of vertca chases and horzonta chases sha
not exceed one thrd and one sxth of the thckness of the
masonry respectvey.
() When narrow stretches of masonry (or short ength of
was) such as between door and wndows, cannot be
avoded they shoud not be perced wth openngs for so
ppes or waste ppes or tmber |onts, etc., where there s a
possbty of oad concentraton such narrow engths of
was sha be checked for stresses and hgh strength brcks
n mortar or concrete was provded, f requred.
(v) Horzonta chases when unavodabe shoud be ocated n
the upper or ower one thrd of heght of storey and not
more than three chases shoud be permtted n any stretch
of a wa. No contnuous horzonta chase sha exceed one
metre n ength. Where unavodabe, stresses n the
affected area shoud be checked and kept wthn the
permssbe mts.
(v) Vertca chases shoud not be coser than 2 m n any
stretch of a wa. These sha be kept away from bearngs
of beams and ntes. If unavodabe, stresses n the
affected area shoud be checked and kept wthn
permssbe mts.
Masonry drecty above a recess, f wder than 30 cm.
(horzonta dmenson) shoud be supported on nte. Hoes
n masonry may be provded upto 30 cm wdth and 30 cm
heght wthout any nte. In the case of crcuar hoes n
the masonry, no nte need be provded for hoes upto 40
cm n dameter.
(b) Cuttng of chases n haf brck oad bearng was :
No chase sha be permtted n haf brck oad bearng was
and as such no recessed conduts and conceaed ppes
sha be provded wth haf brck thck oad bearng was.

(c) Cuttng of chases n haf brck non oad bearng wa :
Servces shoud be panned wth the hep vertca chases.
Horzonta chase shoud be provded ony when
unavodabe.
1..$.%. &OINTS
The thckness of a types of |onts ncudng brck wa
|onts and cross |onts sha be such that four course and
three |onts taken consecutvey sha measure as foows :
() In case of Moduar brcks conformng to IS : 1077 - 1986
specfcaton for common burnt cay budngs brcks, equa
to 39 cm.
() In case of non moduar brcks, t sha be equa to 31 cm.
Note : Specfed thckness of |onts sha be of 1 cm Devaton
from the specfed thckness of a |onts sha not exceed
one ffth of specfed thckness.
1.2.5.1 FINISHING OF |OINTS
The face of brck work may be fnshed fush or by pontng.
In fush fnshng ether the face |onts of the mortar sha
be worked out whe st green to gve a fnshed surface
fush wth the face of the brckwork or the |onts sha be
squarey raked out to a depth of 1 cm whe the mortar s
st green for subsequenty pasterng. The faces of brck
work sha be ceaned wth wre brush so as to remove any
spashes of mortar durng the course of rasng the brck
work. In pontng, the |onts sha be brushed to remove
dust and oose partces and we wetted, and sha be ater
refed wth mortar to gve rued fnsh. Some such fnshes
are fush weathered, rued, etc.,
1.2.6. CURING
The brck work sha be constanty kept most on a faces
for a mnmum perod of seven days. Brcks work done
durng the day sha be sutaby marked ndcatng the date
on whch the work s done so as to keep a watch on the
curng perod.
1.2.7. SCAFFOLDING
Scaffodng sha be strong to wthstand a dead, ve and
mpact oads whch are key to come on them. Scaffodng
sha be provded to aow easy approach to every part of
the work.

1.2.7.1 SINGLE SCAFFOLDING
Where pasterng, pontng or any other fnshng has been
ndcated for brck work, snge scaffodng may be
provded, uness otherwse specfed. In snge scaffodng,
one end of the put - ogs / poe sha rest n the hoe
provded n the header course of brck masonry. Not more
than one header for each put - og / poe sha be eft out.
Such hoes sha not be aowed n the cases of pars, brck
work ess than one meter n ength between the openngs
or near the skew backs of arches or mmedatey under or
near the structura member supported by the was. The
hoes eft for put - ogs / poes sha be made good wth
brck and wa fnshng as specfed.
1.2.7.2 DOUBLE SCAFFOLDING
Where the brck work or te work s to be exposed and not
be fnshed wth pasterng etc., doube scaffodng havng
two ndependent supports, cear of the work sha be
provded.
1.2.8 MEASUREMENTS
1.2.8.1 Brck work sha be measured n cubc meters uness
otherwse specfed. Any extra work over the specfed
dmensons sha be gnored. Dmensons sha be
measured correct to the nearest 0.01 m .e. 1cm. Areas
sha be cacuated to the nearest 0.01 Sq.mts and the
cubc contents sha be worked out to the nearest 0.01
cubc meters.
1.2.8.2 Brck work sha be measured separatey n the foowng
stages
(a) From foundaton to foor one eve (Pnth eve)

moduar and 115 mm for non-moduar brcks.
Where fractons of haf brck occur due to archtectura or other
reasons, measurement sha be as foows :

1.2.9 RATE
The rate sha ncude the cost of materas and abour
requred for a the operatons descrbed above except the
vertca renforcement and ts encasement n cement
mortar or cement concrete. The rate sha aso ncude the
foowng :
(a) Rakng out |onts or fnshng |onts fush as the work
proceeds.
(b) Preparng tops of exstng was and the ke for rasng further
new brck work.
(c) Rough cuttng and waste for formng gabes, spays at eaves
and he ke.
(d) Leavng hoes for ppes upto 150 mm da and encasng hod
fasts etc.,
(e) Rough cuttng and water for brck work curved n pan and for
backng to stone or other types of facng.

1.4 HALF BRICK WORK
Brck work n haf brck was sha be done n the same
manner as descrbed above n 1.2.4. except that the brcks
sha be ad n stretcher bond. When the haf brck work s
to be renforced. 2 Nos. M.S. bars of 6 mm da, sha be
embedded n every thrd course s gven n the tem (the da
of bars sha not exceed 8mm). These sha be securey
anchored at ther end where the parttons end. The free
ends of the renforcement sha be keyed nto the mortar of
the man brck work to whch the haf brck work s |oned.
The mortar used for renforced brck work sha be rch
dense cement mortar of mx 1:4. Lme mortar sha not be
used. Over aps n renforcement, f any sha not be ess
than 30cm.
The mortar nterposed between the renforcement bars and
the brck sha not be ess than 5 mm. The mortar coverng
n the drecton of |onts sha not be ess than 15 mm.
1.4.1 MEASUREMENTS
The ength and heght of the wa sha be measured
correct to a cm. The area sha be cacuated n Sq. m.
where haf brck wa s |oned to the man was of one
brck or greater thckness the measurements for haf brck
wa sha be taken for ts cear ength from the face of the
thcker wa.
1.4.2 RATE
The rate ncudes the cost of the materas and abour
nvoved n a the operatons descrbed above ncudng
renforcement.
1.5 BRICK TILE WORK
1.5.0 The work sha be done n the same manner as descrbed n
5.2.4. except that brck te sha be used nstead of brcks.

The measurement and rate sha be same as specfed
under 5.2
1.6.0 HONEY COMB BRICK WORK
The brck honey comb work sha be done wth specfed
cass of brck, ad n specfed mortar. A |onts and edges
sha be struck fush to gve an even surface.
The thckness of the brck honeycomb work sha be haf-
brck ony, uness otherwse specfed. Openngs sha be
equa and aternate wth haf brck ad wth a bearng of 2
cm on ether sde.
1.6.1 MEASUREMENTS
The ength and heght sha be measured correct to a cm.
Area sha be cacuated n square meters correct to two
paces of decma. Honeycomb openngs sha not be
deducted.
1.6.2 RATE
The rate ncudes the cost of materas and abour nvoved
n a the operatons descrbed above.
1.7 MOULDING AND CORNICES
1.7.0 The specfcatons descrbed under 5.2 sha appy n so far these
are appcabe. Moudngs and cornces sha be made wth
brcks as specfed for brck work. The brcks sha be cut
and dressed to the requred shape as shown n the
archtectura drawngs.
1.7.1 Cornces sha not ordnary pro|ect by more than 15 cm to 20
cm and ths pro|ecton sha be obtaned by pro|ectng each
brck course by not more than one fourth of the brck
course by not more than one fourth of the brck ength. For
cornces pro|ectng more than 20 cm and requrng more
than quarter brcks pro|ecton, meta camps sha be used
and pad for separatey.
1.7.2 Corbeng sha be brought roughy to shape by pasterng wth
the specfed mortar. When the mortar s st green, the
moudngs sha be fnshed straght and true wth the hep
of meta tempates.

1.7.3 CURING AND PROTECTION
The moudngs and cornces sha be cured for at east
seven days. These sha be protected form the effects of
sun and ran by sutabe coverng and aso from damage
durng the executon of the work.
1.7.4 MEASUREMENTS
For the purpose of measurements, the sectona perphery
of moudngs and cornces (excudng the porton n contact
wth wa) sha be measured n centmeters and ength n
meters. The grth and ength sha be measured correct to
a cm. No deducton sha be made from the masonry of
wa for the bearng of the moudng and cornces.
1.7.5 RATE
The rate ncudes the cost of materas and abour nvoved
n a the operatons descrbed above.
