The courses in this brochure are completely free and accessible, and are available to all Calico customers and anyone living in our neighbourhoods. They have been selected to help you develop your skills and knowledge, improve your employment opportunities, and overcome challenges to achieve your personal goals. All courses provide a certicate, and some are accredited with nationally recognised qualications. Youll also get to meet new people, share experiences, and build your condence. As part of your registration, well also check with you to see whether our National Careers Service can help you. If you need help with transport or childcare, or have any other concerns, just ask and well see how we can help. Who is it for? Mainly Calico customers, but anyone interested in learning more about Calico as an organisation or how social housing works is welcome. Its a great opportunity to get to know new people in an easy-learning environment. What will I learn? It gives you a good understanding of how housing services work, which may help you get involved with us or increase your employment prospects. Past participants have learned lots of other new skills and developed their self condence. Date and time of course The course lasts 12 weeks and each session is for 2.5hrs. It is held twice a year: 24th April 10th July (Wednesdays), 10am 12.30pm, or; 17th September 3rd December (Tuesdays), 10am -12.30pm Maximum number of participants 16 Where Calico Head Ofce,Centenary Way, Croft Street, Burnley Michelle Harrison, who successfully completed the Calico Academy programme, said: Attending the Academy and nding out what Calico do has helped me feel a part of something that ts in with my values and beliefs, and to feel useful again. Who is it for? Anyone looking for work as an administrator. What will I learn? This course offers a practical way of gaining the knowledge required for a role in Business Administration. You will be able to understand the importance of using the right storage conditions for different food types and the need for high standards when handling food. Marian Brown, who attended one of the Changes to Benets sessions, said: The session was very useful as I learnt about the changes that the Government are bringing in from April 2013. With the information I was given, I can help other people to understand how their benets will change and how to deal with it. The session was very good and interesting, and I would denitely tell other people to attend if they get the opportunity. 7

The course is designed to help you understand how to apply for and maintain a tenancy, and your rights and responsibilities as a customer. James Waring, who completed Passport to Housing, said: When I rst moved into the Elizabeth Street Project, Id only been there a few weeks when Nicki suggested I do the Passport to Housing course, as it would look good for when I get my new tenancy, and she was right. Our tutor Elke, who had a good sense of humour, taught us everything we needed to know about how to keep a tenancy. To say it was six weeks, I would say it was the best six weeks Ill never forget. Elke made the lessons more fun we even played a game of Blockbusters. If it hadnt been for Nicki and Elke, I wouldnt have my own at. I would just like to say thank you for everything.

Our training providers


All our training providers are very welcoming and offer a professional but informal approach to learning. Many of the courses are delivered by Calico staff, who have lots of experience in their area of work. We have links with local colleges that can offer accredited training. We also work with other small independent trainers to help deliver our training programme.

Who is it for? Anyone not condent about using computers or accessing the internet, even if youve never switched one on before! Particularly important if youre claiming benets, which are moving to Universal Credit from October 2013, as all claims will have to be made online. What will I learn? Online basics, which include ve short modules showing how to use a mouse and keyboard, email, and online search, and how to stay safe online, ensuring you have the condence and skills needed to start enjoying all the fantastic things the internet has to offer. We are the advice service you need for future skills, careers, work and life choices. We can assist with your personal develop your career with specially designed tools to help you progress or get you on the job ladder. If youre aged 19+ (or 18+ if youre a JobCentre Plus customer or an ex-offender), you can have up to three one-hour sessions with an advisor completely free of charge.
