Lesson 4
Asking Part II
As learned from your previous lesson there is an art of questioning. There may be different form on how to create your questions but the main idea is to give out the questions clearly. Make sure that the questions asked was clearly understood by the person you are asking.

Asking for and Giving Directions :

Make use of the proper form of making a question as per learned from your previous lessons in English class. Here are tips on how to give directions. This is a collection of resources that can be used to teach how to give and ask for directions. In this section I've identified three common ways to give directions based on different situations

GIVING DIRECTION: (METHOD) 1. Street Name and Nearby Landmark

Perhaps, the easiest way to give directions is just to say what street it is on. For countries that don't use street names you can give an area and a landmark. 2. Subway or Bus Directions
Another common way to give directions is to tell somebody what bus or subway to take, where to transfer, and where to get off.

3. Directions by Car Route

Another way commonly used to give directions when driving is to state the route including highways, bridges, tunnels, and turn offs.

Language Points: Street Name and Landmark It's on Pine Street. It's on 4th Avenue. It's on the corner of Fourth and Pine. It's next to the bank. It's across from the school. It's opposite the bookstore. (It's in Yeonsu Dong across from the CGV theater.) Subway or Bus Directions Take the Green Line to Central Station. Transfer to the Main Line. Get off at Market Station. Go out exit number 4.

Directions by Car Route Take coastal highway. Take the Westminister turn off. Go over (Take) the Alex Fraser Bridge. Go through (Take) the Massey Tunnel.

Warnings:

Don't give too much information. It only creates confusion. Just focus on what is essential, leaving out extraneous detail. If you are guiding someone while they drive, do not point and say things like, "there it is" or "go that way." They cannot pay attention to their driving and look at which way you are pointing at the same time. Instead, say things like, "it is on the left, about half a block further," or "turn left at the next corner." Do not wait until the last minute to advise a driver of the next instruction. Let them know ahead of time so they can prepare, and avoid making sudden, dangerous changes in direction at the last moment. Do not shout! Give directions in a clear, calm voice, early enough to give the driver plenty of time to understand, plan, and safely execute his or her next move.

Shouting directions may cause the driver to react quickly, without taking time to do so safely.

It is pleasant to chat with the driver while traveling, and may even help him or her stay more alert. However, if you are going to be giving directions in a relatively rapid sequence, stick to the directions, and be quiet the rest of the time. This will make your directions clearer, and easier for the driver to follow safely.
