Liportos class

General Information This week we will be busy with learning! The highlight of the week will be the Family Tradition and Artifact Museum on Wednesday morning from 9:1510:00. I have talked to some of the students about their artifacts and there are some amazing items coming in. Please join us to celebrate our unique backgrounds! IMPORTANT DATES *Family Tradition and Arifact MuseumWednesday, 1/15, 9;15-10:00am *MLK Jr. Day, No School Monday, January 20 *MCAS Long Composition Tuesday, Mar. 18 *MCAS English Language Arts Wednesday, Mar. 26- Thursday, Mar. 27 *MCAS Math Tuesday, May 13Wednesday, May 14 Homework This past week the students did well turning in their homework. I have noticed, however, an increase in the number of papers that are being turned in incomplete or without names on the top. I will be stressing to the students the importance of always doing their best work.

Also, spelling packets are going home again this Monday. Please remind your fourth grader that they should be completing 3 DIFFERENT activities for the week, not the same thing three times. Language Arts This week we will work on determining importance. We will begin by categorizing information from text into two categories: important to know, and nice to know. We will be reading the book Snowflake Bentley about the man who first learned how to photograph snowflakes and learned that they are all unique. In guided reading we will continue to focus on inferencing skills and identifying the schema from our heads that help us to make inferences. Writing We will be moving away from narrative writing this week and focusing on informational writing. Students will be spending time looking at mentor pieces of writing and analyzing the structure of expository writing. Math We will continue with unit 6 in math. This week we will focus on measuring angles using a typical protractor as well as a 360 protractor. Well also look at coordinate grids (such as the one used in the game Battleship) and explore with two digit divisors in long division.

Math Club this Tuesday morning will focus on long division, especially division with two digit divisors. (Students, the secret number this week is 90, the number of degrees in a right angle!) All students are welcome to attend from 8:00am to 8:30am on Tuesday mornings. EVERYDAY MATH FAMILY LETTERS on-line address:
