Theme: Masks are made and worn for various reasons.

The two wooden masks we have are from Africa, probably made just for dcor/selling. Both come from western Africa. Masks were usually made from local materials. If African countries (or others) were landlocked, shells or other rare materials became a treasured commodity. Mid-19 century ? ? Bella Coolas were a nation (PC not tribe, Indians consider themselves nations) from the Pacific Northwest whose beliefs included the supernatural, storytelling, totem poles and gift giving; read Potlatch book in folder.... Masks have been a cultural phenomena for eons. What is it about disguising our identity? Masks of antiquity have been made from indigenous materials. The masks are able to tell us a lot about a culture. Who, what and why. The reasons for masks. Begin brainstorming how many types of masks and purposes there are: Protective, Sports (catchers, sword fighters), Medicine, Rituals (where the human becomes, or the human imitates), Disguise (for fun, mischief or crime), Death, Theatre (in Rome, the masks amplified the voice of the actor), Festivals/Holidays (Halloween, Chinese New Year), Power.. If Arizona made masks a long time ago, what might we make our masks from? (Wood, copper, hides, snake skins, feathers, dried grasses, pretty stones like quartz..) Would shells be treasured? /yes In America, do most women wear a mask? /yes make-up Our masks make us more beautiful. Mask derived from Italian maschera or Latin masca..(mascara!) A saying of women of old was I have to put my face on. Tattoos on the face are also a type of mask. The New Zealand Maoris and other South Pacific nations tattooed their faces to scare their enemies. The amoris would also stick their tongues out at their foes! Why do you think many people collect masks? Beauty and interest; they could be antiquities and many people value what is old; craftsmanship they are like pieces of sculpture, the facial characteristics convey an emotion to the viewer..would you like a collection o f masks? Do you know we have life masks of Abraham Lincoln? They were made when he was living. We do not have a death mask of him, a mask usually made from wax or plaster, after the person died. But there are such things. Egypt is famous for them. A death mask was made for the boy kin, King Tut. Death masks were made for remembrances (there was no photography back then), to be laid upon the coffin or tomb, to be later made into a bust or used as a painting model. We have technology that can make computer copies of peoples face or head in 3D! Can you tell me why an anthropologist or historian might value masks?/tells about the culture: what was valued, what rituals or religions might have taken place, gender roles, power structure of a nation/tribe, who were their trading partners and how much communication was taking place, what resources were plentiful or scarce Lets talk about what happens when you wear a mask. What does identity mean? Its the label or words you use for yourself or others to explain who you really are. Usually, it tells who or what you are that cant be seen. Can you picture yourself as wearing a large gold and diamond mask? How about a scary monster mask? Think for a moment and picture yourself wearing some type of mask, other than the more useful kind. How do you feel? How do you picture others feeling? Power? Power is a big idea behind a mask. When a mask is on, our outside traits and identity are gone. We can be whomever we choose. There is a freedom when a mask is on. Certainly a criminal wearing a ski mask feels at ease robbing people knowing no one will point their fingers at him. He can put shame aside. (Hip hop song by B.o.B: Past My Shades); Ask the kids to create the mask they imagined themselves wearing earlier, and try to create it with paint, markers, miscellaneous items (feathers, beads, jewels, shells, Twisteez, rope, etc.)
