Replacing the Battery

If the words Low Battery appear on the LCD screen while you are taking measurements, open the control unit and replace the 9- volt battery inside. A battery typically lasts for 8-10 hours of continuous usage. ===============================================================

Attaching the Electrical Cable

Plug the electrical cable into the control unit and the transducer enclosure before use.

Turning TinyPerm II On and Off

Press black on/off switch once to turn TinyPerm II on. NER TinyPerm II Ready! should flash onto the screen followed by Push + Hold. Pull the plunger all the way out before you begin measuring.

===============================================================

Press and hold black on/off switch to turn off. The button may be released when NER TinyPerm II Ready! flashes onto the screen again. (Note: Depending on the state of the microprocessor, this may happen very fast or it may take a second or two.)

Taking Measurements

Turn on TinyPerm II. Pull plunger all the way out, and make sure the screen is reading Push + Hold. The number displayed on the right side of the screen is the current vacuum status. This value should be centered on 0 (no vacuum) before a measurement begins. Press rubber nozzle firmly against the rock surface that you wish to measure. If you are measuring a fracture aperture, make sure the nozzle is centered on the fracture. Depress plunger completely. The current vacuum and a measurement status bar will be displayed on the screen. Hold the plunger in and continue pressing the nozzle to the rock face until the vacuum is 0 and the status bar indicates that the measurement is completed. The results will be displayed on the screen. Record results in a field notebook. TinyPerm II measurements can be cross-referenced to the included calibration curves in order to obtain absolute permeability or fracture aperture. Pull plunger out to take another reading.

Alternate Tips

If you are measuring rough samples, you may find that the nozzle cannot prevent airflow along the surface of the sample. We have included artists kneaded rubber erasers and Silly Putty to ensure accurate measurements on irregular surfaces. In order to apply these tips, first roll or press the substance into a thin, flat sheet. Trace around the nozzle tip and cut out to create a press-on jacket for the nozzle. Apply the jacket and take measurements as normal. We recommend attempting to use the artists eraser first because it is easier to work with. If you use Silly Putty, be VERY careful to roll out an extremely thin sheet and to keep the putty along the outer edge of the nozzle as much as possible. It is important to avoid sucking the silly putty into the pressure cylinder.

Troubleshooting
TinyPerm II wont turn on. Replace the battery. Check internal and external cable connections, particularly those leading to the LCD screen inside the control unit. TinyPerm II isnt resetting. Make sure plunger is pulled all the way out. Twist the plunger rod to make sure the potentiometer inside the vacuum cylinder has made a good electrical contact. TinyPerm II wont take a reading. Make sure the electrical cable is snugly attached to the control unit and the transducer enclosure. If you are working on an irregular surface, try an alternate tip. If TinyPerm II still fails to recognize a pressure pulse and/or take a measurement, the sample may have a permeability that is out of range. The vacuum level doesnt return to zero. Push plunger in half way. Cover the nozzle tip with a finger and pull plunger out. TinyPerm II should reset. Continue with measurements as normal. My measurements arent consistent. Make sure you are taking measurements in the same place each time. Be careful to hold TinyPerm II perpendicular to the sample face with adequate nozzle pressure to maintain a good vacuum seal. If you have been pumping the plunger rapidly, give it a minute to cool off.
