F I H L (Manufacturing Technology - II (ME - 312)

The document provides an overview of major manufacturing processes including material removal processes like machining and finishing. It classifies machining processes as single-point tool operations like turning and multi-point tool operations like milling. Specific machining processes discussed include turning, shaping, planning, drilling, tapping, boring, reaming, milling, hobbing and broaching. It also covers grinding and honing as finishing processes.

Manufacturing f i Technology h l II (ME 312) (Class-II)

By Dr. Mamilla Ravi Sankar Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Technology Guwahati

Major manufacturing processes

Manufacturing processes are classified into 3 groups 1. Constant Mass operations
Casting, Rolling, Extrusion, , Wire drawing, Forging Welding, Riveting, Bolting, Keying

2.

Material Addition operations p

3.

Classification of Material removal processes

Material removal processes

Traditional

Non-traditional (advanced)

Bulk Removal Processes (Machining/Cutting)

Finishing g Processes

Circular Shape (Turning, drilling, boring) Prismatic P i ti shape h (Milling, planning, shaping, gear cutting, broaching)

Bonded Abrasives (Grinding, honing)

Loose abrasives (Lapping, Polishing, AMPs)

Classification of Machining Processes

Metal cutting g is the process p of removing g unwanted material from the workpiece in the form of chips.

Lathe Parts

TURNING PROCESS

Roughing and Finishing Cuts Rough cut: high speed cut with little regard for dimensional tolerance. Finishing cut: lower feed rate and depth of cut.

Various operations that can be carriedout on Lathe

Importance of lathe: Pillars developed by Lathe

SHAPING PROCESS

10

The cutting motion is provided to the tool and the feed is given to the workpiece.

DRILLING PROCESS
Is the process used to cut a cylindrical hole with a drill press and drill bit

14

TAPPING PROCESS

15

BORING PROCESS
Enlarges the hole slightly to make it rounder and straighter.

16

REAMERS

17

REAMING PROCESS

To enlarge a hole to a more accurate size and surface quality

18

MILLING

FACE MILLING PROCESS

Horizontal Milling Process

Axis of Arbor is horizontal to workpiece

VERTICAL MILL

MILLING PROCESS
Slab/ Plain milling Vertical or End milling

It is provided with a rotary motion gradually y fed. and the work is g Small chips are removed by each cutting edge during revolution, and finally a flat surface is produced.

End milling: Machining is along the axis of the milling cutter

Other Milling types

Basic function is same as horizontal milling but application is different, (Different shapes of cutters are mounted based on application)

HOBBING PROCESS

25

BROACHING PROCESS

26

BROACHING PROCESS
Toothed tool, called a broach. Two main types of broaching: linear and rotary. In linear broaching, the broach is run linearly against a surface of the workpiece to effect the cut. In rotary broaching, the broach i rotated is t t d and d pressed d into i t the workpiece to cut an axis symmetric shape.

27

GRINDING PROCESS
Surface grinding Form grinding Surface grinding: Used for grinding flat surfaces. surfaces Form grinding: It is used for grinding g g of g gears, thread g grinding g Cylindrical C li d i l and grinding of splines etc. grinding Cylindrical grinding: It is used for external and internal cylindrical surfaces. Center-less grinding: It is used for grinding of external and internal surfaces. In this, machines are different from that of cylindrical grinding grinding.
28

Center-less Grinding

HONING PROCESS

The honing operation is used for finishing g the inside surface of a hole. The honing speed may vary from 15-60 m/min.
