Evil Dead is a 2013 American horror film co-written and directed by Fede Alvarez.

It is the fourth instalment of the Evil Dead franchise, serving as both a reboot, a remake and as a loose continuation of the series that first started in the 90s. Evil Dead was announced on July 15, 2013 to be adapted into a live experience as the first maze announced for Universal Studios Hollywood's and the second maze for Universal Orlando Resort's annual Halloween Horror Nights event for 2013. The sub-genre is zombie and supernatural and is a hybrid genre.

The first scene of the trailer is a typical horror convention no matter what sub-genre; a cabin in isolated woods. From the shot we can see an establishing shot however we can hardly see the cabin due to nature of the trees in the way, we also can see rain and grey gloomy weather which once again is ideology linked to horror. The weather reflects on the whole style of the film, death, sadness and inevitable gloominess. These are all themes within horror and straight away we denote the fact this film is most definitely horror. The second shot if of a female begging a boy to help her get out of here. The previous shot followed through with the heavy sounds of rain as the sound, this continued as the female in the second shot spoke. I believe the thumping loud sound of rain created a rhythm and speed which was quite unusual because it sounded more of an action film soundtrack. This is a midshots and it ties in with Laura Mulveys theory. Firstly, her narrative suggests she is helpless which Laura Mulveys identifies in her theory that women are seen as sexual helpless and often in need of help by men. This shot represents the male gaze theory by Mulveys because the narrative suggests she is in help, and she is talking to a male, needing his help. Therefore she is in need of a male, and she is helpless as her theory claims. Also from this shot her appearance seems as though she is weak, her red eyes, pale and greasy skin suggest she is not healthy and she needs someone to take care of her. The sound of the rain continues even after her narrative then suddenly stops, I believe this is significant because it allows the audience to jump and it is surprising. The music suddenly becomes more subtle yet stays with its fast paced rhythm. It increases when typography appears and lowers when an actual scene comes up. This is a midshots which is also a typical horror convention in the beginning of films. It is a warning; this is often used in horror to connote danger and evil. This is further emphasised by the colour of the ink. Red connotes blood evil danger and death, this is a significant colour in horror and is predominantly used. Also the font

particularly used in this handwriting suggests horror also, due to the spiky, messy, and messy writing it reflects upon the whole nature of the film. Horror is dangerous and messy in itself and I believe the typography was purposely chosen to reflect the genre of the film. The shots increase in a fast pace however contrast because the female from the earlier shots has a conversation. This is also under a very fast pace and switches between shots of a point of view shot running in the woods, when she is talking there is no music hwoever the switching between the shots in the forest have a quick paced soundtrack behind. Then suddenly, a shot of this female appears. I believe this is once again causing the audience to jump because it randomly occurs, I think the contrasting scenes created suspense of something looming and this image is that. This is an image of a young female looking possessed. You can also she is naked showing she can be portrayed as sexually vulnerable and covered in blood, once again a horror convention, her black hair also is looking incredibly messy and her entire appearance connotes a young girl taken over by something. She most definitely suggests not alive, and a zombie in this shot.

This scene is of a young teenage girl, who is a victim and is covered in blood due to an attack. Immediately I can see this is blonde and young, this is a common characterisation of a victim in horror films, referencing from films such as Nightmare on Elm street and Scream. This is followed by another scene of a young female being attacked, once again we can see females are the main victims of this group whilst men are hardly shown and when they are, it is due to them being needed to rescue a female. However, the attacker also is a female so although most of the victims are female so is the antagonist. The fast paced music tends to continue with typography scenes in-between. This scene is of the evil character and the blood is a gore extravaganza, from this we can denote this may be a slasher subgenre film. The slasher is also emphasised with the weapon of a knife which is a common convention of slasher. Shots like these are common and are continually repeated, this connotes this is the evil from the shot before and the evil attacking these girls.

I believe the final shot is the most significant because the continuous fast paced trailer of several gore scenes comes to a sudden end of a little girl singing a nursery rhyme. Throughout the film the few shots we saw of her connoted she was evil, however only in the end we realise the is a child due to her singing a nursery rhyme. This nursery rhyme is the only soundtrack that plays which connotes fear because it seems as though it is only her and the audience. Her appearance is too also fearful, the blood representing gore and slasher, the colour of her skin and eyes unusual and not a norm therefore suggesting she is not human and indefinitely not alive i.e a zombie. Therefore linking to the film title The Evil Dead. I believe the structure of the trailer was thought out due to this specific inter link. To conclude, the trailer consists of creative anlges, a cacaphonic soundscape and dramatic lighting to compose a zombie and supernatural horror. The evil dead is not only frightening but surprising, which will definitely have the audience jumping out of their seats.
