T1 Organization of BodyQrev

Wendy Chan provides an overview of the tutorial for CC2417 Human Biology. Students are asked to bring a toy animal to class and will complete questions testing their knowledge of anatomical terms. The questions cover topics like the levels of organization of the body, anatomical positions, body cavities and organs. Students are also directed to online resources for additional study of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

Tutorial 2 Chapter 1 Organization of the Body

Dear Students,
Please bring one animal toy to the tutorial class. I would like to test your ability on
the use of anatomical terms.

Level I Simple & short questions

Answer all the following questions:
a. Complete Longenbaker (textbook) Ch 1 Learning Objective Questions.
b. List the five levels of organization of the body in order of increasing
complexity, beginning with the cells.
c. A sagittal section divides the body into _______and ______ portions
d. How do you lay out an anatomical position?
e. Match the body cavities with organs
f. Know the names of the membrane covering organs e.g. pleura covers the
lung
g. Homeostasis means –
h. What are positive feedback and negative feedback? Give examples.
i. Labelling the following diagrams:

Level 2 Questions
Review Ex.

1. Distinguish between the activities of anatomists and physiologists.

2. In what ways do homeostatic mechanisms act by negative feedback?

3. How does the human body illustrate the levels of anatomical organization?

4. Distinguish between the axial and appendicular portions of the body.

5. Distinguish between the dorsal and ventral body cavities, and name the smaller
cavities within each.

6. List the major organs that comprise each organ system.

Level 3 Questions
Critical Thinking Questions

1. In health, body parts interact in ways that maintain homeostasis. Illness may
threaten homeostasis, requiring treatments. What treatments might be used to help
control a patient’s (a) body temperature, ( b) blood oxygen concentration, and (c)
water content?

2. Suppose two individuals have benign (noncancerous) tumors that produce

symptoms because they occupy space and crowd neighboring organs. If one of these
persons has a tumor in her abdominopelvic cavity and the other has a tumor his
vertebral canal, which patient would be likely to develop symptoms first? Why?

3. If a patient complained of a stomachache and pointed to the umbilical region as the

site of discomfort, which organs located in this region might be the source of the
pain?

Valarie Further thought

3. Name a structure or organ that is both superior and inferior to the brain.
Name one that
is both anterior and posterior.

4. If a person has appendicitis ( inflammation of the appendix caused by

bacteria), pain is
felt in which abdominal quadrant? Surgery is usually necessary to remove
an inflamed
appendix before it ruptures and causes peritonitis. Using your knowledge
of the location of
the peritoneum, explain why peritonitis is a very serious condition.

5. Refer to question 4, and explain why bacterial meningitis can be a very

serious infection.
