VGS Vane Separators Are Recommended For

VGS vane separators are recommended for removing liquids from gas streams in a variety of critical applications. They are highly efficient, able to remove droplets as small as 5 microns, and can achieve efficiencies over 99.5% for droplets 1 micron or larger. VGS separators use durable vane assemblies that have greater structural integrity than mesh pads, and are better able to handle pulsating flows and liquids. They require little maintenance and feature designs that prevent removed liquids from being re-entrained in the rising gas stream.

VGS vane separators are recommended for:

Replacement for mesh pad type separators Critical applications where high efficiency is essential, such as removal of acids, where carryover will cause corrosion problems Removal of light and/or low surface tension liquids where carryover may cause catalyst poisoning, membrane contamination, or low product yield Removal of large amounts of liquids from gas streams where the liquid to gas ratio is greater than 5% by weight Removal of viscous or sticky liquid When high turndown from the gas flow design point is desired Steam service Removal of condensate and/or lubricating oil Chemical and petrochemical facilities for the recovery of product and pollution control Performance Burgess-Manning vertical gas separators are designed to perform at high efficiency while operating over a wide range of flows and liquid loads. The VGS will effectively arrest slugs and droplets as small as 5 microns. Efficiency is influenced by particle size distribution and liquid loading. When particle size is below 5 microns, an internal upstream mesh pad or vane agglomerator/coalescer may be utilized. This integral part of the separator will raise the removal efficiency up to 99.5% of liquid droplets 1 micron and larger. See Figures 2 and 3. Design The inlet nozzle is located on the lower third of the vessel shell, and the outlet can be on the upper third of the shell or in the top head. The inlet and outlet nozzles can be independently located at any radial position on the shell. Vane assemblies (also known as vane bundles) have far greater structural integrity and are more mechanically robust than mesh pads. These features, plus the inherently more open architecture and resistance to plugging, allow the vane separator to be applied successfully in pulsating service, and on the inlet side of reciprocating compressors. No maintenance is normally required for these designs. Vane blades are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, titanium, zirconium, Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel, and other alloys. All VGS separators feature an internal liquid drain collection box at the base of the vane bundle, which drains to the vessel sump via an internal downcomer drain pipe. These features assure that removed liquids are not exposed to the rising wet gas, avoiding re-entrainment. Provisions should be made to allow the bottom of the downcomer drain to remain submerged in the sump liquid, or provide for a catchpot on the bottom of the downcomer, to create a liquid seal. Alternatively, the drained liquid can be diverted outside the vessel shell by connecting the downcomer to an external nozzle. Other designs include four-bank models that feature an equal-sided box arrangement that allow the mist eliminator to be installed inside large diameter (>60" ID) vessels. Pressure drops across vane elements seldom exceed 1/3 PSI (<10" water column). Care should be taken in choosing inlet/outlet nozzle sizes, as these are often the source of the majority of flangeto-flange pressure losses.
