Created in 1989 as an innovative idea, Festo valve terminals are a milestone in the development of easy to use pneumatics; so much so that it is hard to imagine the world of automation without them.
Reduced complexity increased practical use The valve terminal was the single most decisive step in reducing complexity and costs in automation. The benefits are: simple installation, configuration and commissioning, low maintenance and service, very adaptable mechanically, pneumatically and electrically.
Enhanced modularity and flexibility Made for a broad range of applications. The individual combination of different functions on one terminal enables precise configuration of the valve terminal to the application. Minimised error quota Previously, each individual valve and each individual component part such as coils and silencers had to be ordered and installed individually. The error quota in orders, assembly and commissioning fell dramatically with the introduction of valve terminals.
Reduced costs If you are looking to reduce the overall costs of a system you should consider using costsaving and comprehensive solutions such as valve terminal technology. Thanks to fully pre-assembled and tested units, ordering and logistics costs are drastically reduced.
The structure of a modular valve terminal shows why valve terminals reduce costs: there no longer is any need to order and install individual components. An example for clarification: For a system with 200 valves, one requires: 200 valves 200 - 400 coil plugs and just as many cables 200 ports for the compressed air supply 400 silencers 400 fittings for the working lines Or: 6 - 8 valve terminals, each with 25 - 30 valve slices
Past, present and future: pioneers in the field of valve terminal technology Festo defined valve terminal technology and continues to do so. Thanks to its: innovation quality, know-how, excellent manufacturing quality and program quality with maximum variety worldwide Festo is the number 1 in valve terminal technology.
As the first supplier of IP65/67 remote I/Os for M12 inputs/outputs on the fieldbus, Festo defined this market too. Something that sounds quite complicated is actually made very easy, because only Festo offers so many services for simple design, commissioning and maximum process reliability.
Valve terminals for every automation concept Valve terminals from Festo are ideal for all automation concepts, be they simple applications or complex systems. Thanks to remote I/O and installation systems, their bandwidth and functionality in practically every conceivable application in pneumatics, electrics and networking cannot be beaten. Its a combination of maximum performance, very high process reliability and an impressive price/performance ratio. The potential for minimising overall costs in terms of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is yet another plus.
1990 Valve terminal innovation First electrical IP65 inputs/outputs on the fieldbus Complete electrical/pneumatic control chain Diagnostics level 1
1996 More decentralisation First decentralised installation system with hybrid data & energy cabling for I/O Compact valve terminals CPV and CPA
Different connection techniques, only one favourite: fieldbuses The number of pneumatic and electric drive and control elements is growing at a very fast rate. With parallel wiring of ever larger and more complex systems and interlinked processing centres over larger networked processing cells, the cabling is becoming immensely complex. The number of input and output points is driving installation work and costs skyhigh, while the likelihood of errors is increasing considerably.
The simple and quick solution for these requirements is innovative fieldbus technology. It even enables the networking of different automation components, which is often required in contemporary system concepts.

Valve terminal with multi-pin plug connection A multi-wire cable connects the valve terminal and a controller. It provides one wire for every valve coil, and additionally one wire for the ground connection of all valve coils.
Quick electrical connection of the valves via pre-assembled multi-pin plug and cable Connection to every controller possible All electrical connections integrated Ideal for compact machines with short lines Saves: costs, space, installation and testing time
Valve terminal with fieldbus connection Coded switching signals represent a further important reduction in the number of wires to the consuming devices. The coding of the signal composition and transmission is defined in so-called protocols.
Internal wiring on the valve terminal Signal transmission takes place serially via the fieldbus connection: long distances can be bridged Inputs and outputs are moved from the control cabinet to the valve terminal Ideal for complex systems and machines with several stations Saves: costs, space and installation, commissioning and testing time Function integration (axis controller, positioning systems, safety technology, pressure regulation technology, temperature recording etc.) Device/periphery diagnostics possible

In the early 1980s, fieldbuses represented a first and very important step in enabling communication between machines and systems. Nowadays, networking in control technology has advanced significantly and extends to the highest levels within companies. The central components are fieldbuses and Industrial Ethernet, which enable industrial communication from the machine to management level and vice versa.
The control technology pyramid Four levels of industrial communication are generally defined: Management level The main focus at this level is clearly on integrated process visualisation and tracking. It also incorporates the interface to production systems. In general, complex but normally not particularly time-critical data packages are often transmitted over large distances. Control level Synchronisation of production processes or data within individual processes or system parts. This generally happens between different PLCs.
Field level Complex equipment and data within a machine component or a production segment are networked using a fast and robust bus system. Sensor and actuator level Very fast communication with possbile real-time capability within the machine and at the lowest control level. Digital or analogue processing of signal statuses and diagnostic messages of all actuators and sensors.

Making the most of smart advantages, e.g. diagnostics These open communication concepts are not only of interest to OEMs, who need to have solid condition monitoring and diagnostic information to hand in
the context of service life guarantees, full service contracts, or to protect against unfounded recourse claims. They are also of interest to end users who depend on having the highest level of process reliability.
Moreover, end users and operators can retrofit and integrate these Festo systems the information is provided via the standard interfaces to the higherorder process and machine diagnostics.

For more than 20 years, fieldbuses have been revolutionising industrial communication. In the 1980s, the technical and financial development within the automation industry made a new, groundbreaking technical solution absolutely essential. Even today, its significance continues to grow as it results in, for example, ever more complex, highly networked and above all, closely synchronised production.
Fundamental reasons for the use of fieldbus technology include: reduced error quota, also through automatic troubleshooting during set-up and in operation improved productivity and reduced downtimes, because diagnostic information is accessible from the field devices reduction in installation effort by more than 60 %
reduction in assembly expenditure and costs for testing actuation and data transmission between selected components of a system definable electronic control systems enable the combination of systems installation and use in the different machines and systems
substitute control cabinet, as installed directly on the machine improvement in cost/benefit ratio permanent improvement in the time-to-market situation
Advantages for design 1. Fieldbus protocols Easy integration in existing control systems Direct fieldbus connection of pneumatic drives Minimised installation space Flexible task adaptation Assembled directly for the task Saves on time and installation Comprehensive technical documentation Faster construction
Advantages for procurement Reduced costs Single sourcing for optimised product selection and warehousing Reliable ordering Reduced follow-up costs Lower maintenance costs Fully pre-assembled and tested units Low operating costs
Advantages for commissioning and maintenance Simple expansion Quick switching of modules Comprehensive diagnostics and condition monitoring possible Simple, step-by-step installation and commissioning

For more than 20 years, Ethernet has revolutionised office communication. This LAN technology has become a standard in this field. This had also led to further innovations and improvements in productivity in production and manufacturing. With the combination of the advantages of fieldbuses and Industrial Ethernet, the second revolution is about to commence: the Ethernet can send messages to participants of a common line network by a kind of wireless system.
Increased efficiency Manufacturing and logistics benefit enormously from the possibility to network communication and information flows worldwide without huge expense using the Internet and/or Intranet. One technology for all networks simplifies the training of network specialists and programmers. Communication is drastically simplified even for mixed hardware from different manufacturers, such as e.g. servopneumatic and electric drives, measurement stations or modular valve terminals.
Diagnostics No laborious programming of a PLC and machine operator unit as it is now possible to call up diagnostic information from the field devices. Remote diagnostics and maintenance also possible with normal PC/browser. IT infrastructure: An existing IT infrastructure and know-how can be used many times. Extremely fast data transmission up to 100 Gigabytes/sec. Configuration and recording of data and controls remains consistent, even over several network levels.
Integrated advantages: CPX as an example An intelligent electrical periphery such as the CPX terminal integrates these advantages. And for Festo valve terminals it offers the most up-to-date communication methods, such as fieldbus and/or Ethernet, comprehensive diagnostic services, condition monitoring, pre-processing and the latest function integration. Furthermore, it is not just uniquely modular and flexible, but also independent of all PLC manufacturers and can be integrated seamlessly into all host systems.

PROFIBUS PROFIBUS distinguishes between active stations such as PLCs or PCs (master devices) and passive stations such as sensors or actuators (slave devices). There are three different PROFIBUS versions: PROFIBUS-DP is specially designed for communication between automation systems and decentralised peripheral devices and is thus universally suited to manufacturing automation. PROFIBUS-PA is best suited to applications in process automation and supports data communication and energy transfer via the bus. PROFIBUS FMS takes on communication tasks at cell level, e.g. communication between PC and PLC.
PROFINET The PROFINET protocol guarantees data exchange with a high data transmission rate, for example real-time critical I/O data from sensors, actuators, robot controllers, PLCs or process equipment. Likewise, information on diagnostics or configurations that is not real-time critical can also be transmitted. The Ethernet bandwidth and communications model are sufficient for the parallel transmission of both data types.
Remote bus for longer distances Local bus for communication, e.g. in a control cabinet INTERBUS loop connects components with a small number of I/Os EtherCAT With EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control Automation Technology), the focus is placed on real-time capability, which is why primarily EtherCAT messages are transmitted. EtherCAT is characterised by its short cycle times and highprecision synchronisation with practically no jitter. From the standard Ethernet frame sent by the master, EtherCAT slave devices only take the data intended for them and insert input data while the message passes through. The definition of device profiles such as CoE, CANopen over EtherCAT was taken from existing fieldbus technologies and integrated in EtherCAT.
CANopen Maximum reliability and interference immunity define the CANopen communication protocol, which was developed for the automotive industry. Today, CAN is the standard network in cars, buses, lorries, trains and agricultural utility vehicles. Different requirements in terms of data transmission can be achieved via PDOs (process data objects) and SDOs (service data objects). PDOs are fast real-time data, SDOs transmit parameter data such as for example timeout times, maskings or mapping parameters.
INTERBUS INTERBUS works on the basis of a master/slave access method, whereby the bus master simultaneously realises the link to the host controller or bus system. INTERBUS has a ring topology, i.e. all stations are active in a closed transmission path. INTERBUS consists of an I/Ooriented transmission method with a summation frame protocol. The following physical variants of the transmission method exist:
MODBUS MODBUS is based on a master/slave (e.g. a PC), or for more complex tasks, a client/ server architecture, and is then used for example for measurement and control systems. It transmits data in binary format within TCP/IP packets for a good data throughput. MODBUS can connect one master and several slaves in two ways: for the serial interface or for Ethernet.
14
DeviceNet The fieldbus for industrial field devices such as limit switches, optical sensors, valve terminals, frequency converters and operating panels reduces the amount of expensive individual wiring required and improves devicespecific diagnostic functions. DeviceNet communication on the broadcast-oriented Controller Area Network (CAN) meets the extensive demands for transmission reliability and interference immunity in vehicle construction and also operates in large temperature ranges. Ethernet/IP The open bus system based on the Ethernet standard and TCP/IP technology is one of the most frequently used Ethernetbased fieldbuses. It communicates, for example, between the electrical CPX terminal and the Ethernet/IP network. The bus node is provided with system supply via the interlinking block and processes communications via the I/O modules. Access to the data is possible directly from the device.
CC-Link Bus system from Mitsubishi for high-speed communication, for example between the electrical CPX terminal and a higher-order master for Control & Communication-Link (CC-Link). The bus node is provided with system supply via the interlinking block and processes communications via the I/O modules. AS-interface For optimised working with decentralised solutions at reduced costs: the AS-interface is, at actuator/sensor level, the ideal complement for fieldbus systems or industrial Ethernet. Data and power transmission all take place on only one cable.

Nowadays smart machine concepts are based on three important cornerstones: pneumatics, electrics and networking. Mixed pneumatic and electrical systems are linked for communication via Ethernet and fieldbus protocols, thus achieving new levels for productivity and process reliability. Having the right product selection and the right machine and installation concept is also key if future requirements are to be satisfied. Festo covers practically every possible option in this respect.
