Chernobyl

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986 was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history. Reactor number four at the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine exploded during a late-night safety test, releasing a plume of highly radioactive fallout over a wide area. At least 30 people were killed immediately, and the long-term death toll due to radiation poisoning is estimated to be around 4,000. The accident forced the evacuation and long-term resettlement of over 300,000 people from both the immediate area and also more distant contaminated regions. It exposed the dangers of nuclear power and caused widespread changes in nuclear safety standards.
