ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN COMMUNICATIONS

FEBRUARY 2014

ISSUE 1

Offering communication students a welcoming place to grow, connect, and succeed.

A blast from the past: Brian Lambs tips for getting a job or internship
In 1991 Brian Lamb, CEO of CSPAN, came to Purdues campus to give some tips for students on how to seize a job or an internship. AWC alumnus, Melissa Acheson, recorded his suggestions. Here are his tips: 1) Have a good handshake. 2) Shine your shoes. 3)Make a one-page resume. 4) Read a daily newspaper. 5) Look people in the eye. 6) Be interesting. 7)Have some idea of your goals. 8) Know the company you want to work for. 9) Dont be afraid to be different. 10) Be a good listener(you never learn anything with your mouth open). 11) Do anything within reason to get inside the door. 12) Its not what you know, its who you know. Youll get a job by what you know, but youll get in the door by who you know. 13)Believe in something; have character. 14) Be public. 15) Doing what you want to do doesnt mean you cant pause a little for breaks.

Letter From the President

Dear Members, Recently I had the pleasure of meeting several professionals from The Indy Star and the Journal & Courier in my Intercultural Communication class. While they were visiting they spoke about several stars or rock stars in their o!ces. So I asked, What makes a rock star or a leader in your o!ce? Whether they are an intern or C-level executive, what makes these people stand out? I received several interesting answers that would be applicable to your career search, involvement in student organizations or life as a student. Je" Taylor, Editor and Vice President at the Indy Star, shared that the greatest leaders pull teams together. They are the people who get others enthusiastic about the progress and the mission of the company. He stated, You can achieve great individual success but that does not make you a great leader. As professional women in communications or in any other industry, we will be working with other people in teams in some aspect. It is important to adopt a We centered attitude, more so than an I. Think about it, if the team is succeeding then most likely everyone in the team is successful. However, If one person in the group is successful, it does not necessarily mean all members are successful or satised. Karen Crotchfelt, President and Publisher at the Indy Star, stated the great leaders in communication are exible, curious, passionate and risk-takers. In her words, You have the Grand Canyon in front of you, but will take the risk and jump it? As professional women, aspiring leaders, and Boilermakers, we need to take the jump toward the bright futures ahead of us. Nykky Robinson AWC President
