My Reflection Ever since I was a little girl, I have always thought I was going to move into the career pathway of law enforcement. Being on the streets, on the edge, on the lookout; I wanted to catch all the criminals and put them in handcuffs. I thought about going to a school like Sonoma State University because I have always loved being able to visit the campus from volleyball practices to visiting my cousin. Sonoma State is also very close to home; I wouldnt even have to move out of my house yet. I have never thought about my future in a serious manner until this year, this class, this assignment. Trying to decide my future at fifteen years old and younger has always made me feel uneasy. Now that its happening, I dont want to grow up, so I dont want to make these tough decisions just yet. After many hours of research, and a few personality tests, I finally figured out what career I have been interested in this whole time---Social work. Being a Social Worker means more than just barging into random homes that have slowly crumbled from the relationships within to the painted gutters. It means assisting those who cannot help themselves. It means doing something nice not just because you can but because you want to. Since I am older and more mature than I was when I was thinking about my future in junior high, I can conclude that I love to help people, and I want to be able to do that for the rest of my life.
Cubba 2 I contacted the head of the member support at the National Association of Social Workers or NASW. I introduced myself and my purpose for emailing them. I also asked a few questions about the schooling required, their favorite part of the job, and the best way to jump-start into working in this field. They responded rather quickly with multiple websites and books for me to explore in order to learn more about being a Social Worker. I respect that they took the time to email me back. My passion for this job field is only growing as I get more in depth on the technicalities of Social Work. Throughout this project, I have discovered that California State University at Chico has a great program if I were to major in Social Work. The education required is a four-year Bachelors degree, and Chico can offer that option for me. I also love the campus and atmosphere of being in a little town. My mom went to Chico, so I could also carry on the tradition. The duties that a Social Worker may perform include working in child an adolescent residential institutions, assist in community development, and place children in foster or adoptive homes. My babysitting background allows me to be able to say that I love kids and would do anything for them. Two classes that I have considered taking at Casa are Psychology and Cultural Anthropology, two of the requirements needed to be a Social worker. With all of these new discoveries about my future, I have worried about how I will be able to put myself out there, into potentially dangerous situations and having to walk and talk with confidence. Those are things I can make a personal goal to improve, however. Because time is limited before I am going to be moving into a college dorm room, I would also like to meet a current Social Worker and get to know the job for what it really is. Being a Social worker would make me feel as though I am assembling a better society one youth at a time.
