Type of Triangles
Complete the table below on the properties of the different types of triangle : Type of Triangles Sides Equilateral triangle All sides are equal in length All angles equal Angles Properties Lines of symmetry
Isosceles triangle
2 equal sides
2 equal angles
Acute scalene Triangle No equal side for acute scalene triangle but acute isosceles triangle has 2 same sides All angles less than 90 degree Only acute isosceles triangle has 2 same angles Only acute isosceles triangle has 1 line of symmetry
Right Triangle Only right isosceles triangle has 2 same sides Has 1 right angle Only right isosceles triangle has 2 same angles Only right isosceles triangle has 1 line of symmetry
Obtuse Scalene Triangle No equal side for obtuse scalene triangle but obtuse isosceles triangle has 2 same sides Has 1 angle more than 90 degree Only obtuse isosceles triangle has 2 same angles Only obtuse isosceles triangle has line of symmetry
2. Congruent triangles and Similar Triangles a) What does it mean by congruent triangles? Triangles are congruent when all corresponding sides and interior angles are congruent. The triangles will have the same shape and size, but one may be a mirror image of the other.
c) If two triangles are congruent, are their corresponding angles equal? Yes i.
SSS (side side side). All three corresponding sides are equal in length. So, corresponding angles are equal. SAS (side angle side) A pair of corresponding sides and the included angle are equal. So, corresponding angles are equal. ASA (angle side angle) A pair of corresponding angles and the included side are equal. AAS (angle angle side) A pair of corresponding angles and a non-included side are equal.

e) Two triangles are similar if the only difference is size. Are the sizes of their corresponding sides equal? Identify the properties of the similar triangles. No. Similar triangles have all their angles equal and corresponding sides have the same ratio.
Scale factor for enlargement, K = The ratio of the length of the scale drawing to the corresponding length of the actual object.
If two shapes are similar: they have the same shape same angles but can be different sizes
For any two similar figures the ratio of the imej to the original object : Length = k Area = Volume = K = scale faktor h = height of the triangle
