What Is An Interactive Whiteboard

An interactive whiteboard is a touch screen connected to a computer and projector that allows users to control and modify digital content projected on the board. A typical setup includes a computer, projector, connection means between devices, and an interactive screen. The computer projects the image onto the board via the projector. Users can then interact with the content directly on the screen using a stylus or finger. Movements on the screen are sent to the computer via sensors to be interpreted by interactive whiteboard software, allowing real-time interaction. Key features of interactive whiteboards include tools, user profiles, recording activities, writing and integrating applications, and converting handwriting to text.

The concept of the interactive whiteboard

1.1. What is an interactive whiteboard? The interactive whiteboard is a touch screen of different dimensions, connected to a computer and a projector, becomes a powerful tool in the field of education. It combines the use of conventional board with all the resources of new multimedia and ICTs. The screen is a very robust and suitable for integrated naturally in the classroom, which allows control, create and modify with a pointer, or even with your finger (by technology), any digital educational resource that is projected onto it. Also, any notation or modification may be saved and later printed and distributed. 1.2. Elements of an interactive whiteboard A typical installation of an interactive whiteboard should include at least the following elements: - Multimedia computer (laptop or desktop), equipped with the basics. This computer must be able to reproduce all the multimedia information stored on disk. The computer operating system must be compatible with the software provided on the board. - Projector, with the objective to see image the computer on the board. We must provide for sufficient brightness and resolution. The projector should be placed in the roof at a distance from the board to obtain a large bright image. - Means of connection, through which the computer and the board communicate its. There are connections via bluetooth, cable (USB, parallel) or technology-based connections, radio frequency identification. - Interactive screen, on which projects the computer image and is controlled by a stylus or even with your finger. Both teachers and students have at their disposal a system able to view and even interact on any type of documents, Internet or any information that is available in different formats, such as multimedia presentations, documents or video disc. - Interactive whiteboard software, provided by the manufacturer or distributor and generally allows you to: manage the board, capturing images and displays, available templates, various educational

resources, tools such zoom, manual text converter to print and recognition writing, among others. 1.3. How does an interactive whiteboard work? The operation of the interactive whiteboard is reflected in the following figure:

The Board transmitted to the computer instructions (1). The computer sends the video projector instructions and normal display (2). The video projector projects onto the board the result, which allows the person operating the computer, see in real time, what make on the board and how it interprets the computer (3).

In order to project the image on the computer, the projector has to connect to the teacher's computer via a cable or a wireless connection. Also, the computer connects to the interactive screen via a USB cable or Bluetooth technology, depending on the specific characteristics of the board.

Before you begin using an interactive whiteboard is necessary to calibrate it. With this process, we indicated to the board which will be the working surface, which will coincide with the dimensions of the projected image.

In this way is achieved by projecting on the interactive display any information from the computer. From that moment, all movements are performed by interacting on the screen will be recorded in the receiver, which sends the information to the computer where the software control of the board will make it an image. This registration is done through sensors that detect signals triangulating the exact coordinates of the emitters within the full extent of the board. With one touch on the interactive whiteboard can select menu options and personalize the tool palette, save the changes or create your own user profile. It is also possible to open files, view videos and even connect to the Internet or video mode. Among the features offered by most of the interactive whiteboards we find the following: -Toolbar: just click on the option chosen to perform the desired function. Toolbars are fully configurable. -Create user profiles: each user has the ability to create your own job profile. -Record activities: the interactive whiteboard to the computer to record all activities on the screen. -Write and integrate applications: this feature allows the teacher to automatically display the work of a student to the rest of his teammates and even write about it. -Write on picture or video: allows the teacher to interact on a projected image on the screen or even on video. -Convert handwriting to text: through a recognition program designed for conversion between handwriting or text editable, this conversion is possible. -Emailing: the interactive whiteboard allows you to email any file or folder for each user. -Video-mode: This option allows communication via videoconference with other students, teachers anywhere in the world. The whole class can see and hear what we communicate. -Data-conference mode: This option allows the teacher to communicate at a distance and in real time, with students sharing a tutorial for voice and data (software, images, annotations, voice ...)

-Languages: interactive whiteboards can be configured in different languages and there are even models that allow configuration to regional languages. -Output format: the boards are able to import and save documents in any of the following formats: JPG, GIF, HTML, PDF, etc.. -Templates and Images: Most boards have integrated their own templates and image galleries. -Interactive curricular-Activities: This functionality provides a series of lists of links or interesting websites curriculum, which will allow each classroom teacher to explain the themes of his subject. -Ability to create templates: with the board the teachers can generate their own materials using your own templates.
