Design Project 5

The document outlines the tasks for a semester design project to produce phthalic anhydride from naphthalene. The 16 tasks include collecting information on the product and production routes, developing flow diagrams, specifying process conditions, simulating the process, performing material and energy balances, developing a PFD and P&ID, integrating heat and mass, performing economic analysis, and preparing a final design report. Progress reports are due at various stages to track work and the final report is due at the end of the semester along with individual presentations.

ChE 470 Semester Design Project Spring 2013 Project #5: Production of Phth !

ic "nh#dride from $ phth !ene You have been assigned the task of completing a preliminary (conceptual) design of a chemical process to produce phthalic anhydride from naphthalene. The project covers all stages of conceptual design, starting from consideration of qualitative aspects of the process flowsheet and preliminary calculations to detailed process simulations, equipment si ing, costing, and an economic evaluation of the designed process. !n this problem, emphasis is given on designing a realistic process and justifying it (that is, all design decisions and assumptions) through simulation and finally to evaluate the design in terms of economics, environmental impact as well as operational efficiency. "fter economic evaluation and establishing a #base$case% design, further improvements on the process design should be considered in terms of energy and&or mass integration, environmental impact evaluation and process optimi ation. The work needed for conceptual design is broken down into '( tasks, as shown below. )ompleting all these tasks completes the conceptual design. The tasks are ordered according to a sequence, which needs to be followed for efficient use of the time and resources of the designer. The preliminary work (tasks '$*) needed for establishing the design problem is to determine the synthesis routes for converting a specific raw material to the desired product. +electing the synthesis route also defines the reactions that will take place in the process. " literature search will also provide data on the reaction kinetics, including reaction temperatures and product yields. ,nce you have these and have decided on the amount of product to manufacture per year, you are ready to start with task - of the conceptual design. Design $ote%oo&s "ll information and design task work is to be done in a group of . people, and all work should be organi ed in a design notebook. This notebook (a folder, a binder, etc.) should be kept in a neat and organi ed fashion. /ajor results should be highlighted with each submission such that your instructor can rapidly find the important conclusions that you are attempting to present. You should make a copy of your design notebook for your record because the notebook will not be returned to you after you pass this class. 'ime!ine nd (ist of Design Project ' s&s Task '0 )ollect information about your product (why is it important, what are its uses, physical properties, the biggest producers, average plant capacities,1). Task *0 )ollect as much information as possible about current production routes for this product, including the corresponding raw materials needed to produce the
