This new chapter was introduced in January 1999 as decided by the Board in December 1998. The Rule changes come into force on 1st of July 1999. This chapter is valid until superseded by a revised chapter. Supplements will not be issued except for an updated list of minor amendments and corrections presented in the introduction booklet. The introduction booklet is normally revised in January and July each year. Revised chapters will be forwarded to all subscribers to the Rules. Buyers of reprints are advised to check the updated list of Rule chapters printed in Pt.0 Ch.1 Sec.1 to ensure that the chapter is current.

This new chapter introduces a series of voluntary class notations utilising data embedded in the NAUTICUS information technology that will consist of a product model and a 3-D graphical model. The notations are primarily aimed at the ship in operation phase although it will also be possible to use them at the newbuilding stage with a notation 1HZEXLOGLQJ. The structure of the 1$87,&86 notation has also been included.

In addition to the above stated rule amendments, some detected errors have been corrected, and some clarifications have been made in the existing rule wording.

If any person suffers loss or damage which is proved to have been caused by any negligent act or omission of Det Norske Veritas, then Det Norske Veritas shall pay compensation to such person for his proved direct loss or damage. However, the compensation shall not exceed an amount equal to ten times the fee charged for the service in question, provided that the maximum compensation shall never exceed USD 2 million. In this provision "Det Norske Veritas" shall mean the Foundation Det Norske Veritas as well as all its subsidiaries, directors, officers, employees, agents and any other acting on behalf of Det Norske Veritas.

$  1$87,&86 QRWDWLRQV  General provisions governing the assignment of the 1$87,&86 class notations, with appropriate additional notations, are stated in Pt.1 Ch.1 Sec.2 B1000.  For the notation 1$87,&86 2SHUDWLRQ , no additional requirements are specified in this chapter. %  ' JUDSKLF PRGHO  The 3-D graphical model is part of the product model and consists of a three dimensional view of the entire hull structure and associated features. Other relevant elements of information are linked to this model. %  6RIWZDUH WRROV DQG IHDWXUHV  6RIWZDUH WRROV are computer programs designed to perform specific tasks. Selected tools are accessible to the owner for vessels with 1$87,&86 class notations.  6RIWZDUH IHDWXUH is a common description of the data handling capabilities and characteristics associated with the various software tools accessible through NAUTICUS .  NAUTICUS is the registered trade name of the software applications associated with the Society's product model technology. %  '19 ([FKDQJH  '19 ([FKDQJH is the user interface software, which provides the user with access to relevant parts of the product model.

%  3URGXFW PRGHO  The term SURGXFW PRGHO refers to the principle of collecting relevant information pertaining to classification about a product over its life cycle and to link this information directly to the product in a computer model. The product model includes the ship structure and essential equipment for which an involvement by the Society has been defined.

$  $SSOLFDWLRQ RI WKH UXOHV  The 1$87,&86 class notations define a degree of exchange between the owner and the Society of data and information stored in the product model. At his own discretion, the owner may also allow other authorised users direct access to the product model.  The 1$87,&86 class notations apply to the ship in the operation phase. The notation may be assigned at any stage of the ships life provided the data and information needed to establish a product model and 3-D graphic model for the ship is available. $  6WRUDJH DQG UHWULHYDO RI GDWD  Data related to the condition of the ship are stored in the product model by the Society. The product model is updated upon completion of a periodical survey or upon receipt of other service experience that may be relevant for the ship.  Retrieval of product model data may be arranged through DNV Exchange.

$  *HQHUDO  It is the responsibility of the Society to establish and maintain the product model.  It is the owners responsibility to supply the necessary data and information needed to establish the product model. $  1HFHVVDU\ GDWD  The data and information needed in order to establish the product model corresponds to that needed in order to assign main class $ and relevant additional class notations. $  &RQILGHQWLDOLW\  Product model data for individual ships is of a confidential nature and will not to be passed on to a third party without the owners written consent, except as provided in Pt.1 Ch.1 Sec.1 B600.

$  0DLQWHQDQFH RI ,7 VWDQGDUG  In the event that the owner agrees to purchase and use DNV Exchange then the responsibility for maintaining the minimum IT standard, as defined by the Society, in support of DNV Exchange, is shown in Table A1.  It is the Society's responsibility to maintain and update the software packages supplied by the Society.

$  0DLQWHQDQFH RI SURGXFW PRGHO  It is the Society's responsibility to maintain and update the product model based on survey results, damage reports and receipt of other relevant information applicable to the ship.  It is the owner's responsibility to supply data needed by the Society for maintenance of the product model.  Changes to the ship or installed equipment may necessitate changes to the product model. Such changes to the product model will be effected by the Society.
