I speak with many of you from my desk in Northern Wisconsin, but the opportunity to meet face to face, to speak with you directly and hear your stories in person really brings everything together.
At the 2014 Expo, I met Steve Mahoney, a contractor from Missouri whose father started out in the business in the 50s. Hes been around the industry his whole life, owns his own company, and his wife even started an offshoot parts supply company. Mahoney, his father and three of his brothers all have
their own service companies in the greater St. Louis area. Sewer and drain work has been the lifeblood of this family, and he says most of the sewer and drain cleaners in the area have worked for him at one time or another. I spoke with another contractor, Chris Mihaletos, who is a native of South Africa but now calls Phoenix home. His company provides cleaning, hydroexcavation and a host of other services, and after more than a decade in business, the company now has a staff of 150 and several locations across the West. The company is tackling some interesting jobs, including the largest crossbore inspection project in the country. And there were many others. The Iowa drain cleaner whose brother owns a companion pumping business. The Georgia woman who has built a substantial cleaning, inspection and rehabilitation business. There are so many stories to be told, and its an honor to convey them to you. You can look forward to seeing some of them in the pages of Cleaner as we move forward. And while were looking ahead, take note that next year the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International will become WWETT the Water and Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport show. We understand that like the industry, this show has evolved to encompass far more than septic pumping and drain cleaning. The industry and profession has surpassed what many could have ever imagined way back in 1979, when Pumper was rst delivered to mailboxes across a few Midwestern states. The new name better reects the industry and this show. Its a more accurate snapshot of what we have become and where we are heading. Its a show for an entire industry of hardworking people who maintain the ow in our sewer and water infrastructure, properly treat and dispose of wastewater, and keep drinking water safe and our environment healthy. COLE Publishing has always used the annual Expo to show our appreciation for the work you do, day in and day out. That wont change. Though often overlooked by others, we understand that what you do is vital to the individuals and communities you serve. If you couldnt make it to Indy, start planning now so you can be there next year. Its the best thing you can do for your business. Enjoy this months issue. C

hen licensed civil engineer Nick Mathey rst heard about televising sanitary and storm sewer lines he had just completed designing a subdivision, complete with roads, retention ponds, and sanitary and storm sewer lines. The reviewing engineer said the plan looked great, but noted in the specications that the contractor should have sewers televised before acceptance by the municipality. My thought was, What does this mean? Mathey says. I didnt know about this, but I went and found out, thinking what a cool thing the technology was somebody playing with a robot collecting data. I knew this was something I would enjoy doing. I thought I would be able to add an engineering air, and perhaps give clients more value. As an engineer I would be able to talk with people at a different level and hopefully provide an edge to the process. Pipe View was born. The young entrepreneur already had a fulltime job, so his new endeavor was often overwhelming in those rst years as he gathered clients and subcontracted televising jobs in his off hours. In the beginning, Mathey televised storm drains and worked on pre-construction projects where he inspected lines under roadways to document conditions. Although he initially targeted contractors, opportunities soon opened up with municipalities, and he eventually expanded his services to include sanitary lines. In 2013, the company branched out into gas and power line inspections for several utility companies, which became a major part of the business. Mathey initially designed and used his own camera and

transport systems, which performed satisfactorily, and he ran the business on his own. However, he soon realized that for Pipe View to succeed, he would have to focus solely on the business. The comfort of a full-time job had to go, and the equipment would have to come from established CCTV manufacturers.
We dont just say what is going on, but why it is going on. We offer to design solutions. To simply document is like a at soda.
Nick Mathey
By 2010, Mathey had partnered with Gary Rabine, whose group of companies offered complimentary services. Pipe View subcontracted for those operations, and Mathey secured ofce space with Rabine and shared supporting services in their Schaumburg, Ill., facility. The transformation was in full swing, and by the end of 2013, Mathey had four NASSCO certied technicians and ve Aries Industries CCTV vans on the road traveling as far away as Colorado, Mississippi and Illinois to provide TV inspections. Staff also included three team techs, and ofce assistant Grace McCafferty. Matheys father, Jim Mathey, works for Pipe View, and initially, his grandfather, Paul Goralka, went on some of those early service calls.

Pipe View premise lead Greg Balderos and premise technician Joe Gorman use a RIDGID locator to pinpoint an inspection cameras underground location.
Mathey also credits his supervisor, Bill McCafferty, who oversees his own CCTV van and two others. Matheys many long hours doing nighttime inspections and running the operation were paying off, and he was able to turn his attention to estimating, servicing existing clients, setting goals, promoting Pipe View and, most important, pushing his team to a high standard of excellence. He also began exploring new avenues for advancement in pipeline inspection technology. CIRCLE OF CATALYSTS The winning team includes Mathey and his employees, Rabine and the Rabine Group, and Aries because Mathey considers the manufacturer an essential part of the circle. He continually consults with Aries engineers on equipment performance and innovation. He also depends on family support, even down to his little daughter, Hannah, who named the Aries camera Buddy. When Mathey committed to investing in the camera system in 2010, he invited several top manufacturers to visit his facility, and after careful

Nick Mathey
evaluation, he settled on Aries. My plan was to bring a new level of expertise using these neat tools in verifying the conditions of pipes and nding obstacles, Mathey says. But I wanted the tool to be chiseled out of engineering basics or standards, explaining why we do things, such as by providing summaries at the end of a project. That is kind of what engineers do in determining a goal. You look at something, and put together a conclusion or summary as to what you found with the data. This is why we send our technicians to become NASSCO certied.
22
In 2011, Mathey realized lateral launching was an opportunity to expand service for his customers. The company had primarily televised mainlines before that point, but the technology has been a boon for Pipe View and now represents up to 95 percent of the business. When we offered this, I wasnt that surprised that it took off so quickly, he says. But I did see it as a risk in the beginning. This has proven to be protable for us, and gives us an area where we can use our expertise and our ability to document to give that engineering air I looked for, to use all of our tools. It has been a great t for us. The NASSCO training and standards offer more than just guidelines for inspecting pipe; they provide parameters for proper documentation. We want to document, diagnose and if requested design the solution, Mathey says. We dont just say what is going on, but why it is going on. We offer to design solutions. To simply document is like a at soda. WORLD OF PIPES Pipe View has inspected miles and miles of storm and sanitary sewer lines in the past few years. In Colorado, the company is televising lines running under roadways scheduled for surface improvements. Wherever you have hard surfaces, there will usually be sewers underneath. If a company is improving the surface, why not know what lies beneath? Mathey says. Mathey says they have televised 4- to 72-inch lines, but pipes are typically 8 to 18 inches. They nd everything from collapsed and broken pipe to roots, cracks and even animals that have moved in. Some
pipes are no longer round, some are underwater and some have dips that hold water. For the team in the eld, his goal is to share the vision and show the big picture. I want them to have instant connectivity and transparency for the work of the day. That is what is important, Mathey says. Our customers do not want to know this week what was done last week. They want real time. We want real-time activities, real-time connectivity. Part of that is listening to the ideas of the technicians, he says. We are always changing our standard operation or procedure. Not big changes. Little changes. Somebody comes up with how to do something differently. We implement it. That is a big deal to us. These are the guys doing the work. This is like a suggestion box. My guys are always sending a text or an email to
EXCELLENCE IN EXECUTION
Pipe View started out as an entrepreneurial program, and Nick Mathey, managing partner, says he thought it would stay relatively small with growth being secondary. Now, he looks to the future and recognizes many avenues available with new technology and opportunity. A friend once said You cannot soar with eagles when ying with turkeys. That is so true, Mathey says. And in a business you cannot have the A team unless everything you do every day is important is at the top of the game. It is so satisfying when you have that excellence in your crew. When the team knows how to inspect a section of 30 homes, nd various issues in the lateral lines, deal with a myriad of conditions, problems because of elevation, different materials, grades, utility lines, repairs a homeowner has rigged up, and still maintain the camaraderie. Some issues you can teach, but you cannot teach ambition. That is what stands out in a cohesive team. Mathey says the most rewarding aspect in the day-to-day operation is when an employee makes the right decision on his or her own. There is nothing better than that. When I can say You made a great call. Nice job.

make a suggestion. They have ownership. Part of our quality control process is giving rewards. When we are looking for something in a pipe, and they nd it, we give a bonus. Something like a utility that crosses the pipe, thats an instant bonus. We dont reward for the number of units televised, but for the quality of what they nd and accomplish. The last thing our clients want is the numbers. They want results. MOTIVATIONAL MANAGEMENT Because Mathey sends his technicians away on one- or two-week assignments, he describes his management style as that of a leader with a vision who inspires his employees to follow. As a manager, he sees that his job is creating strategies and implementing goals. Basically, he wants to have

the right people in place, people he can depend on during these assignments. Typically, we will have one box truck with a two-man crew on a site to service a job to inspect 12,000 lineal feet of pipe in a week, he says. A two-man crew will consist of the lead man and a technician. Each position is important, but the truck belongs to the lead. It is his truck. The goal for each technician is to achieve a lead position. We want our people to have a sense of wanting advancement, and this becomes a ladder they can climb to their full potential. This helps us achieve a good cohesive team. Furthermore, when we add a new truck we will have a lead in waiting. Mathey visits remote job sites if theres a new job or client, or as the project demands, but he has complete condence in his team. Additionally, daily report cards for each truck show the quantity of work done or the footage in lineal feet whatever the project requires. With these reports I know in an instant how a job is going, he says. We work in harsh conditions, and maintenance of equipment is always on our minds. When we have a problem with our equipment, there is always a backup camera, and Aries also has plants in Atlanta, California and Wisconsin should such a need arise. But this is where our training comes in. Every van has a toolbox, and our crews are trained to handle the most critical issues that can come up on this equipment. There is not much our guys have not seen, and they know how to adapt. There is a lot about our business that is not cut and dried. You have to have adaptability to be successful. ALL COMFORTS ON THE ROAD Pipe View utilizes three dedicated inspection vans with climate-controlled control rooms. Cameras include the Aries Pathnder Zoom, used for mainline inspections, and two Aries Lateral Evaluation Television Systems (LETS). They also use two Aries Seeker Portable Pipeline Video Inspection Systems, and a RIDGID SeekTech SR20 for locating. A signicant portion of Pipe Views work comes through the Rabine Group, which handles maintenance, asphalt and paving. Pipe View also gets referrals from Rabine for other contractors. While providing a solution in each situation is one of Matheys goals, its not always part of the project. He says they do suggest options and strategies, and generally consult with clients right in the eld. We dont bring data back to the ofce because most often we are on site to discuss the job. For us, it is all about timing. Real time. Real-time connectivity in the eld. Providing the information our clients need. That sums up our goals. C

electing the correct GPS tracking solution for your sewer and drain cleaning business can be a tough decision. Establishing key concepts to consider, what criteria are most important to you, and the return on investment you can potentially achieve are all critical in making your decision on the right GPS tracking partner. KEY CONCEPTS TO CONSIDER There are many different GPS tracking options to choose from, so it is smart to identify the most basic components of your eet that can be affected and would benet from a GPS application. It is not just important for your business to consider what is needed right now, but also what will be needed down the road. This will help ensure that as your needs change and grow, the solution will be able to adapt and scale with you. It is critical to nd a solution that will provide your management team with the most accurate data, a smooth implementation and, most important, a signicant return on investment. Every eet has different goals and challenges that need to be accomplished, so take the time to dive into what those are for your eet. Commencing the GPS tracking buying process with a general idea of what your criteria are will keep you focused on what you really need and allow you to easily narrow down your list of potential providers. DESIRABLE CAPABILITIES Deciding what capabilities and features you need in a GPS tracking solution is the next phase of the decision-making process. Knowing what you would like to monitor within your eet will lead you to assessing the right

functionality in your GPS tracking software. Many eets, both large and small, will benet from customized reporting capabilities, length of historical data retention, comprehensive alerts, and simple scheduling and dispatching as some of the core features in their GPS tracking software. Functionality, ease of use, accuracy of GPS data, quality customer service and overall customizability are also characteristics that your GPS tracking provider should have. ATTAIN THE GREATEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT If you are only looking to simply see dots on a map within GPS tracking software, the least expensive solution may be the route you want to take. Yet, if you are looking to get the most from your GPS tracking partner, you will want a solution that can help you squeeze the maximum ROI. It should not be the initial cost of the software that you worry about, but the opportunity cost. A Cool Solution
Dry ice blasting equipment boosts contractors cleaning productivity and elevates green street cred
By Ken Wysocky
fter years as a painting contractor, a frustrated Jim Wester started looking for a different way to clean sensitive equipment to prepare for priming and top coating. Today hes out of the painting business completely and instead manages Wisconsin Dry Ice Blasting LLC, an industrial-cleaning outt located outside Manitowoc, Wis. Westers transition from one career to another illustrates how learning about new technology can take contractors in unexpected directions. But in his case, it only occurred because he was fed up with using chemicals and other means to clean everything from oors and equipment to tanks and interior/ exterior walls. I gured there had to be a better way to prep surfaces for cleaning, he recalls. Working with chemicals or hand-scraping things, trying to get into every nook and cranny, wasnt that easy. And some chemicals can make you loopy. I sometimes use a 4,000 psi pressure washer, but you cant use water on most machines. With chemicals and scraping, you cant get everything clean, but with dry ice blasting, you can. Westers aha moment occurred during an equipment demonstration at a Wisconsin cardboard-manufacturing rm. Cold Jet ofcials used a dry ice blaster to clean a corrugator machine, and the results blew him away and left the companys ofcials impressed, too. They couldnt believe what it did, he says. It was awesome. It cleaned everything and did it easily, too. At that point, I was on a year-to-year contract renewal to handle this companys painting needs, and they said theyd extend

EQUIPMENT: Dry ice pellet blasters made by Cold Jet LLC FUNCTION: Industrial cleaning FEATURES: Blast pressure of 20 to 300 psi; a patented feeder design with a feed rate of up to 7 pounds per minute; triggeractivated hopper agitation; 360-degree radius mobility; and all-terrain, no-at wheels. my contract if I bought the machinery. Today, Wisconsin Dry Ice owns four Cold Jet units, which clean surfaces by blasting abrasive dry ice pellets under high pressure. The company owns one Aero 75 DX and three Aero 80 HPs (which essentially are next-generation versions of the Aero 75 DX). The Aero 80 HP measures 43 by 20 by 46 inches and weighs 400 pounds. It features an 80-pound-capacity hopper; advanced hopper insulation; blast pressure of 20 to 300 psi; a patented feeder design with a feed rate of up to 7 pounds per minute; trigger-activated hopper agitation; 360-degree radius mobility; and all-terrain, no-at wheels. Wester says he uses them in a variety of settings, but mostly to clean ethanol plants, as well as specialty equipment such as hydroelectric motors and gas turbines used by utilities. I can honestly say there are very few jobs Ive walked away from over

Plus we can clean almost anywhere, he adds. Take printing presses, for instance. We dont have to pull the press out of the plant to clean it. As long as no employees are working within 30 or 40 feet from the press, we can clean it safely. Wester says hes never had any trouble selling the concept of using dry ice pellets for cleaning. Some prospective customers are initially wary of the cost, which is higher than conventional cleaning methods (such as sandblasting, hydroblasting, chemicals and soda-blasting) because of the cost of the dry ice pellets and the fuel needed to run air compressors and so forth. But Wester also notes he can complete jobs much faster. Give me a printing press that takes their guys eight hours to clean and we can do it in one hour, he says. Like the man said, time is money. C

Jim Wester
the years, says Wester, who established his rm in 2005. The toughest job he faces regularly is cleaning giant 8- to 10-foot-diameter fans in ethanol plants. The chemicals used to make ethanol can eventually cover the fans with up to a 1/2-inch-thick, tar-like coating. It takes a lot of work to clean them up, sometimes up to 18 hours for just one fan, he notes. But they used to chisel off the coating by hand, a job that could take them days to nish and they didnt have days to do it time is money. Plus, when they nished, they had to rebalance the fan blades, which takes a day to do and its expensive, too. When were done, they dont need to bring in anyone to rebalance them, he adds. We get them so clean that theyre balanced the way they were originally. So overall, we signicantly reduce their downtime. Wester uses just one word to sum up another big advantage offered by dry ice blasting: eco-friendly. Dry ice is nothing more than solid carbon dioxide, a naturally occurring chemical compound thats a gas at standard temperatures; as such, the pellets propelled by the Cold Jet units evaporate into a harmless trace gas. When were nished, we leave no secondary waste, Wester explains. Thats getting to be a bigger selling point all the time because other [cleaning] media leave a waste, which increases disposal costs for customers. Plus its getting harder and harder to nd places that will accept some materials, like lead and grease, for example. Using water can cause its own problems, too, he continues. And with sand-blasting, sand gets into everything, no matter how well you protect yourself. Moreover, dry ice pellets are abrasive enough to clean thoroughly, but dont damage the underlying surface of whatever theyre stripping clean.

PROFILE
Almost all of the piping on the island of Roatan is PVC because it is produced in Latin America and is less expensive to ship to the island. In some cases, such as this dive resort on Anthonys Key, Acme Environmental Solutions used HDPE. It is the only company on the island with the equipment needed to work with HDPE.
38
an Taylor doesnt have an operation like yours. It is more challenging in many regards, due in large part to the place where he does business. But those challenges also yield great rewards. Taylor has made a home and a business on Roatan, part of the tropical Bay Islands that lie 40 miles from the north coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. He and his wife, Sam, settled there about 12 years ago after he had spent a civil engineering career mostly in northeastern Africa and the Persian Gulf. They wanted a warm and green place to retire. They bought land to develop with condos and houses, their own home among them. Their development at Keyhole Bay is moving along, but their house hasnt been built yet because Taylor had to build a new company rst. Roatan is very Third World in terms of educational attainment. When Taylor looked for engineering services to begin the development at Keyhole Bay, he couldnt nd them on the island. So he started his own company to do the work. At each step of the development process he had the same problem and solved it by starting a new company or expanding his companys services. As a result, he now has a multifaceted company with 23 key employees who do a bit of everything, from pumping tanks to installation and cleaning. ITS ALL PLASTIC Cleaners in North America are used to nding almost anything in the ground. Acme isnt. We have many different things, but in no case is it the crumbling clay, concrete or the pot metal or the steel we see in our North American communities, Taylor says. What Roatan has is plastic. It could be ABS, PVC or in some cases HDPE. None Workers from Acme Environmental Solutions install of it is old. wastewater collection pipes in the community of Santa Maria Our biggest problems on the island of Roatan. The communitys wastewater system consisted of septic tanks with overow pipes draining onto the are from failing joints on the ground. The number of laborers is typical for the island, where repair side. The second biggest labor is cheap and machinery must be shipped in and moved over narrow roads. At right is master plumber Eugenio Torres problem is inept installation. overseeing the project. We dont have an enforced plumbing code, Taylor says. The lack of codes is both a problem and a benet for people on Roatan. The absence of a code is a boon to responsible operators such as Acme because it can use the smartest and least expensive solution without struggling against rules 30 years out of date. But problems come from pipe installers who dont know what theyre doing and have no rules for guidance. For example, Taylor says, any knowledgeable person would install a sanitary T junction so the curves inside the pipe smoothly add liquid to the ow passing through. On Roatan, workers are equally likely to install the junction backwards so the ow through the curved sections is against the ow going through. Now you have a tremendous opportunity for clogs and problems. We just had a job that took much of one night where we completely replumbed the wastewater collection system for 12 condo units while the occupants slept. They had been put together incorrectly, Taylor says. Clean-outs were in the wrong place or pointing in the wrong direction. The pipes had been suspended with coat hangers every 12 to 14 feet and sagged in between the hangers. To make it more interesting, they had used the wrong pipe.
39
IT STARTS WITH SYSTEMS In part, the problems with Roatans pipes are a result of how the system grew. On Roatan, systems often begin with one person or a few people. Because supplies and shipping are expensive, people install only the amount of pipe needed for the moment, and systems are extended as needed. Because it lacks adequate supply, the municipal water system in most Roatan communities is split into zones. Each zone receives water only two or three days per week. As a result, users store water in Our biggest problems barrels and tubs in their homes for use on days when their pipes are from failing joints arent pressurized. Without constant pressure in the pipes, on the repair side. The can leak in. second biggest problem contaminants What youre delivering to is inept installation. We the house is not potable water but dont have an enforced rather wet water. You can use it for bathing and washing, but plumbing code. you cant drink it. You buy your 5-gallon bottled water for that, Dan Taylor Taylor says. Acme goes to work on days when pipes pressurize and a leak shows, but problems dont result from the collapsing systems that plague parts of North America. Instead of laying new pipe on a bed of sand and then lling space around the pipe with nely sifted and compacted soil, some workers on the island dig a trench, drop in a pipe and backll with the soil they took out. The soil is compacted by surface use. In addition to bending stresses, rocks are often pushed against the pipes, creating other potential problems.
Supplies are landed on mainland Honduras for the Banana Coast cruise port project near the town of Trujillo. Acme Environmental Solutions handled the wastewater system for the port, just a few miles from the companys headquarters on the island of Roatan. The pipe is PVC sourced from Latin American, which makes it cheaper. The rubber gasket on one end identies this pipe as dual-wall sewer pipe with a ridged outside and smooth bore inside.
The water system for the cruise port in the capital city of Coxen Hole is another example of how resources affect work on the island. The water supply for the port begins in a 10,000-gallon tank about half a mile inland and 700 feet up the steep coral hills that form the islands backbone. A 5 hp pump

Placing a new pipe on a bed of sand in a trench that will be lled with sifted, compacted soil is standard procedure for Acme Environmental Solutions and all across North America, but for the island of Roatan, it is not always typical. It is common for workers to dig a trench, drop a pipe in the bottom, and backll with whatever they dug out.
helps the water move through the 4-inch line from the tank to the port facility. Acme had a request to solve a water supply problem because there wasnt enough water pressure in the port to serve the second oor of a two-story building. There should be so much head pressure from gravity alone that there would be no need for a pump, Taylor says. What they didnt allow for was the friction from 47 changes of direction that occurred during installation as the installers changed the course of the water line to go around the many small pieces of property between the tank on the hill and the port buildings 700 feet below. Imagine 47 90-degree elbows. To save money, the people who built the system also changed from 4-inch pipe to 1-inch for much of the run. Acmes solution was to put in a single large pipe, eliminate the pump, and straighten out the run, installing 45- or 22.5-degree bends instead of the 90s when turns couldnt be avoided. Supply and pressure at the port are now more than adequate. The largest pipe used for supply lines on the island is 4-inch, and theres not much of that. Most is 2-inch or smaller, Taylor says. During the course of a night, workers from Acme Environmental Solutions replaced this random selection of pipes serving a condominium complex on the island of Roatan. Non-standard work is the norm in developing countries such as Honduras, where there may be minimal codes and no enforcement.
GETTING STUFF IS THE CHALLENGE Cost is a real factor in accomplishing anything on Roatan. Everything that comes in has to come by boat or plane, and its expensive either way. When Taylor orders supplies he tries to do it by the shipping container when possible, and he takes pains to ll every corner of a container so he moves as little empty space as possible. It can take three to four weeks to get equipment and supplies delivered by sea. That means he has to carry a much larger inventory than he would if he had a supply house nearby. Once on the island, goods are still his responsibility because there is no delivery service. There are only a couple large cranes, and theyre at the docks to unload ships. Workers have to fetch everything from the port, and supplies must t in one of Acmes Isuzu trucks, the 3.5-ton or the 6-ton, or in the halfton Nissan pickup. And everything must be small enough and light enough to be handled by humans because there are few machines on Roatan. If it gets done here, it is done primarily with human muscle. We have a couple of large lift station pumps that we need a backhoe to lift but for the most part we put four to eight men on the working end of a rope or strap, Taylor says. PVC is the pipe material of choice because its relatively inexpensive. Companies in Latin America produce it, so the cost is more affordable than material sourced from North America. On the other hand, its easy to steal water from someones pipe by installing a saddle valve under cover of darkness, and that does happen, Taylor says. Using HDPE eliminates water theft, but its harder for customers to employ because they cannot work with it themselves. There is only one machine and one operator on the island to weld the HDPE joints. The only users who opt for using HDPE are developers of well-planned resorts.
BRIGHT FUTURE Acme clears drains with a Spartan cable machine. Its the only one on the island, and as a result Spartan has become a common name for a cable machine, like Kleenex for tissue. When Roatan residents need a pipe cleaned, they want Acme to bring a Spartan. Acme looked at several camera systems at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo last year and again turned to Spartan. It has an iPad monitor and cables to t the small residential systems as well as the larger wastewater collection systems.
The pipes had been suspended with coat hangers every 12 to 14 feet and sagged in between the hangers. To make it more interesting, they had used the wrong pipe.
Dan Taylor
While at the show, Taylor and his senior operating engineer, Samuel Rivera, also looked at a wide variety of cure-in-place pipe lining systems and decided to go with a system from Source One Environmental. Taylor picked Source One because their equipment is simple enough that Rivera can teach it to people who have never seen the technology, and because it is small enough to t in one of the companys pickups. The system will give Acme an advantage because it will eliminate the need to dig up roads. Like the Spartan cable machine and camera system, the cure-in-place equipment will

be the rst on the island. That means acceptance and use will come slowly. The equipment wont pay for itself at rst. I have to get it rst and build the demand for it, Taylor says. Coming right after the cure-in-place equipment will be pipe bursting gear. It will be especially useful where systems have been damaged due to poor installation or in places where the local installers downsized pipe diameters to save money or where a small pipe is now undersized because of system expansion, Taylor says.

Dan Taylor
There are challenges with working in a developing country, but those challenges are far outstripped by the rewards. They are evident in Taylors enthusiasm as he explains the challenges his people faced and the solutions they applied. The other reward is the opportunity to have a lasting effect. Taylor has been able to build something good completely from scratch and help the people around him expand their skills. More than that, Acme has had a real effect on the local government, which in many cases has adopted the companys practices as the standard against which similar work is measured. SAFETY FIRST
Lingering Threat
Protect yourself against harmful pathogens that can survive for long periods in your work environment
By Doug Day
couple of interesting articles in the newsletter of the Washington On-Site Sewage Association do a good job explaining the risks lurking in the material you work with every day. Executive Director John Thomas also points out that its possible that you could be bringing those pathogens home with you all the more reason to properly wear and use PPE. Research has shown that workers with routine sewage exposures exhibit respiratory dysfunction, fatigue and headache, infection, and increased incidences of cancer, he writes in the summer 2013 issue of the Pipeline newsletter (along with a list of source materials). As he points out in the winter issue, roundworm eggs can survive in soil for up to seven years. Beyond exposure to virus, consider some of the other critters that are in your daily work schedule, riding around with you in the cab, on your clothes, your shoes or boots, your hands. Pathogens can survive for some time in soil, causing such diseases as typhoid fever and cholera, and other health problems: Entamoeba histolytica (parasite) six to eight days Coliforms (bacteria) 38-plus days Salmonella (bacteria) one to 120 days Enteroviruses (virus) eight-plus days Dangerous pathogens can obviously live for a long time in sewage and in surface waters you walk around in while servicing a failed system: Salmonella - up to two months Shigella (dysentery) one month to two years Entamoeba histolytica one month Cholera ve to 16 days Hepatitis A - more than a year Cryptosporidium 18 months
Using a $138,000 grant from the Washington Department of Labor & Industries, WOSSA has been conducting research on hazard assessment, mitigation and training for workers exposed to residential sewage. Presently, a disparity exists between denitive standards of exposure and workplace orientation and education with adequate tools to accurately identify these exposures and educational resources to prevent occupational illness in the workplace, Thomas writes.
Beyond exposure to virus, consider some of the other critters that are in your daily work schedule, riding around with you in the cab, on your clothes, your shoes or boots, your hands.
John Thomas
The study has been looking into identifying not only the actual exposure of workers handling raw sewage, but also subsequent exposure to others through contaminated materials and clothing, and tracking pathogens into ofces, shops and vehicles. The study will eventually result in a new WOSSA training program on pathogen protection that Thomas says is currently unavailable to small business practitioners in the decentralized wastewater industry. The curriculum, once developed, will be available to those in other states to help raise awareness and understanding of pathogen exposure so that those in the eld can have better safety awareness and modify both their attitudes and workplace practices. Thomas also reprints an email from OSHA responding to questions about its regulations dealing with raw sewage. While it is not a regulated waste stream, employers still have a legal responsibility under other OSHA regulations. We note, says an OSHA spokesperson, that employers are required to evaluate their workplaces and, based on the evaluation, institute measures to prevent exposure to recognized hazards. Exposure to raw sewage poses a number of health hazards since raw sewage is associated with a wide range of infectious agents. Its probably a good idea to keep Thomass comments in mind the next time you sit in your truck and reach into your lunch bag to grab a sandwich or before you walk into the house after a long day in the eld and start giving hugs to the family. he National Park Service was modernizing cabins and rehabilitating the wastewater infrastructure in Glacier National Park in Columbia Falls, Mont. HK Contractors in Idaho Falls, Idaho, won the bid for general contractor. HK hired only subcontractors with extensive experience working in sensitive areas. We were selected to pipe burst 2,000 feet of 6-inch mains, says John Galligan, co-owner of Pipeshark in Elverson, Pa. The contractor who cleaned and inspected them reported mostly terra cotta with some cast-iron pipe. Galligan, brother David, and partner Steve Helms planned to transport their TRIC pipe bursting system 2,300 miles to Montana, but delays pushed the project into October. Heavy snows had already closed the highway through the park, says Galligan. We had to get there fast, then rent equipment. Another trenchless companys cooperation enabled Galligan to meet the tightened work schedule despite inclement weather, undocumented obstructions and stringent park environmental rules. This was the companys Super Bowl our chance to put all our skills on the line to meet the challenges, Galligan says. PRELIMINARY PLANNING Galligan planned to rent TRIC equipment from a local contractor or distributor, but found none in Montana. He turned to Rod Herrick, owner of Montana Trenchless, whose company was on the other side of the

park. Herrick loaned him a RODDIE system an R2 pipe bursting machine, portable hydraulic power pack, compact fusion welder and a John Deere D50 compact excavator. Galligan also wanted the 6-inch DR11 HDPE pipe fused before their arrival, but found no one with enough experience to meet Park Service requirements. He had plotted the pulls and fusing areas using aerial photos from Google Earth, and planned eight pulls in ve days, provided the pipe was fused beforehand. Doing it themselves added two days to the project and four more pulls as Galligan split longer runs. The sewer fell 30 feet in elevation from the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and cabins to the Many Glacier Campground and Hotel. Laterals from cabin blocks teed to dedicated 48-inch manholes. Another contractor had removed the structures, says Galligan. The excavations were adequate for pulling pits once we cut crisp 90-degree corners and a straight wall for the cribbing using a Sharp Shooter drain spade. The Park Service stipulated no trees be harmed, but the fused pipe often ran a slalom course between them. We normally rest a 2-by-12-inch-long board against trees and let the pipe rub against it, but the rangers said no,

says Galligan. The men sank metal fence posts on either side of a path through the trees, then used digging bars at key points to direct the pipe as it snaked past them. UNDER THE GUN The mountains surrounding the Swiftcurrent valley are high enough (elevation 8,000 to 9,296 feet) to create their own weather pattern, which cycled from misty rain to sleet to snow and back again for the rst two days. The team fused pipe under a 10- by 10-foot canopy tent at the rst ve pull sites. The 0.6-inch wall thickness of DR11 is twice that of DR17, so it isnt as exible, says Galligan. The cold made it even stiffer, giving us the worst of both worlds. Being forbidden to use large spotlights because they might affect wildlife exacerbated their difculties. The men retreated to the parking lot where the pipe was stockpiled, and wore headlamps to work after dark. In the morning, they moved the fused pipe to pull locations. Working 14-hour days meant we arrived and left in the dark, Galligan says. We slept in a rented trailer 10 miles outside the park, and lived on oatmeal, peanut butter, and granola bars because few facilities were open.

Both workers are from Montana Trenchless. RIGHT: Steve Helms of Pipeshark watches the 6-inch articulated bursting head turn toward the host pipe. It will immediately seat correctly in the host pipe, enabling the HDPE pipe to enter at the proper elevation with a shorter approach.
The average pipe burst was 250 feet with the shortest 80 feet and the longest 450 feet. Our rst surprises were discovering most of the sewer was cast iron, then how extra heavy the material was, says Galligan. The sleek, lightweight R2 ram seemed like a sports car when we needed a Ford 350. The 19- by 12- by 15-inchhigh bursting machine has 50 tons of pulling force at 4,700 psi, and a 22 mm cable rated at more than 50 tons. The 6-inch articulating bursting head immediately seats correctly in the host pipe, enabling the HDPE pipe to enter at the proper elevation with a shorter approach. WICKED NO. 6 The teams reservations proved unfounded. The system cruised through the rst ve bursts in cobblestone soil at 8 feet per minute. The next downstream pull through 250 feet of cast-iron pipe passed under trees, a road and into a manhole between two cabins with 18 inches of clearance per side. We never saw it coming, says Galligan. Suddenly, the ram began plowing through the soil toward a cabin. Full stop! The crew released the tension on the cable, then extended the side cribbing to better distribute the force of the pull. Their rst attempt to break through the obstruction produced identical results. Using the SR-60 locator on a RIDGID SeeSnake, they found the bursting head in a gravel service area where excavation was allowed. The head was stuck in 15 feet of steel well casing. Freeing the head took some encouragement, says Galligan. We put a strap around the HDPE pipe behind the head and pulled back on it with the excavator arm, while we nudged the head with a sledge hammer. Once the pull resumed, the head traveled 20 feet and jammed in ductile iron pipe as it passed under a large pine tree in the middle of the service area. Any further excavation would damage its roots. With no cellphone service, Galligan emailed Herrick that night and requested a slitting blade to fracture ductile iron and steel pipes. Herrick said hed fabricate one. BATTING A THOUSAND As the team set up the next mornings 220-foot pull to a manhole, they looked up the cast-iron line and saw it transitioned to a 4-foot length of steel pipe directly under a white birch tree surrounded by cabins. By switching pits and pulling upstream, we had 215 feet of clear sailing before the head contacted the steel, says Galligan. When it did, the men removed the resistance plate, then built a 12-inchwide space with 6-by-6-inch timbers to receive the steel pipe. With the plate

against the new cribbing, Galligan started the ram and pulled in the last six feet. The head locked into the steel pipe and out it popped, he says. The crew nished the remaining pulls while waiting for the slitting blade to arrive. Adam Shappell and Jeff Hanson from Montana Trenchless delivered the 13- by 8.5-inch-wide tool and helped with the pull. We were surprised how well it cut through the ductile iron pipe, Galligan says. We liked the R2 system. It packs a lot of power and has many clever magnetic features. C

ealth benets to cover your employees when theyre sick are a necessary expense. But have you ever thought of doing more encouraging them to make healthier choices? A workplace wellness program is no substitute for a health plan, but over time, it could help you reduce your benet costs. And it pays off in other ways, too. Employers who offer wellness programs report reduced sick time, heightened productivity, and even a boost in morale and teamwork, says Julie Stich, research director for the International Foundation of Employee Benet Plans. The Wisconsin-based organization conducts research and advises employers on benet trends and practices. In a 2012 survey of more than 500 International Foundation members, 70 percent reported some kind of wellness program, Stich says. Theyre especially common at big companies, which often hire outside vendors to provide them. Health insurers sometimes offer wellness programs to the companies they serve, too either as part of the benets package or as an add-on. But wellness programs arent just for large employers, Stich says. They dont have to be complex or costly and you dont even have to hire an outside consultant to put one together. There are some easy, less complicated things a small employer can do, things that can make a difference, she says. You can start small and build from there. EIGHT IDEAS So where do you start? 1. Healthy snacks It can be as simple as making sure that in the vending machines there are healthier choices available, says Stich. Cut back on the sodas and add bottled water. Replace some of the candy bars with lower-fat or sugar-free varieties. 2. Lunch and learn Your local health clinic or hospital probably has a speakers program that can send staff experts out to talk to the public: the hospital dietitian on healthy eating, an internist on preventing colds, or a physical therapist on preventing exercise injuries. Schedule them during the lunch break and encourage employees to attend. If you ask several different organizations, you can probably get enough topics and speakers for a monthly event. 3. Encourage exercise You can buy everybody who works for you a pedometer so they can track how many steps they take every day, says Stich. Just the awareness will motivate some people to get up and move more.
If you wish, turn it into a low-key contest, awarding an inexpensive gift card to the person with the highest pedometer reading every quarter. (You might want to create categories of competitors, so people whose jobs keep them at their desks the ofce help arent always losing to people in the eld whose work has them moving around all day.)

4. Screenings and shots Once again, turn to local health providers. Host a health screening afternoon with nurses or other professionals who will come in, take employees blood pressure and offer other simple assessments. Even some employees with health insurance probably havent made a habit of getting an annual physical from their doctor. This could help spur them into doing so. Ask your local Visiting Nurses Association (http://vnaa.org) about providing annual u shots. Some employers choose to partially or fully subsidize the cost to encourage participation; the expense might be worth it to prevent just a few absences of three, four or even more days in the heavy u months. 5. Kicking butts Local chapters of the American Lung Association (www.lung.org) or the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) can set up a program to help smokers in your workforce kick the habit. 6. Paring off the pounds Weight Watchers and other weight-loss programs often set up work sitebased programs, meeting after work or during breaks. Some might discount fees in return for the chance to enroll a group of people at once. Some employers choose to subsidize enrollment, but nothing says you have to. 7. Room to move Workplace tness centers are becoming popular with some employers. They dont have to be big or sport Olympic-sized swimming pools or any pool at all. They dont even have to have expensive weight machines. It may be enough to put a walking trail on the property and encourage employees to
56
PRIMELINE
use it during the lunch break. Even a sidewalk around the perimeter of the building can sufce. Its good to get out in the middle of the day, says Stich, a regular user of the walking trails that her own employer has put up at its headquarters. If you want to do more, consider offering classes in everything from aerobics to yoga. Look for qualied teachers at the local YMCA or other tness organizations. Or see if a local tness center will discount monthly fees for your employees. If your cash ow permits, you might offer to subsidize the fee as an employee benet. 8. Kick it up a notch A little competition, like the pedometer contest, can stimulate interest. If you want to expand on that, consider all kinds of friendly health and tness challenges for participating employees. Award points for reporting healthier eating habits, attending those monthly health talks or taking part in an exercise program, for example. Winners can get simple prizes, or even a slight discount on the employee portion of the health insurance plan premium. There is almost no limit to the sorts of wellness programs you can offer. Purchase some tness DVDs for employees to borrow and watch at home. Have a healthy recipe taste-off during lunch, or pick a special day when you ask everyone to bring a salad to pass. Try an offbeat tness initiative: Last summer, says Stich, the benets foundation had an employee bocce league. The Italian lawn bowling game was infectious even people who didnt join a team kept track of the standings. Creating a team of interested employees to organize and run the wellness program can spark interest. The more involvement you get from the people who are participating, the more you can build participation, Stich says. Remember, though, that not everyone participates. And theres nothing wrong with that. There is one group you do want to take part you and your top management. If employees take seriously your encouragement to use the tness center but never see the supervisor there, the message gets mixed then, Stich says. The more buy-in you get from your leadership, the more participation from employees there will be. THE PAYOFF It isnt easy to measure the prot from wellness programs and you wont see it overnight. You cant start a program in November and know by December how much money youve saved, says Stich. Theres usually about a three- to ve-year time frame before you can measure the cost impact. Fewer than one employer in ve that the foundation surveyed tried to measure their return from wellness initiatives. But in a follow-up survey, she says, those who drilled down to that level reported saving two to three dollars on average for every dollar they spent on wellness. Savings, she adds, isnt just measured in the dollars your health benet plan pays out. If youve got a healthier work force, theyll be coming to work, Stich says. Theyll need less time off because theyre sick. And if theyre feeling good, theyll be more productive for you. Thats part of it too. Help your people live healthier lives, and your bottom line will be healthier, too. C

Levine and Sons primarily works with cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) technology on 4-inch residential lines through the 6-inch transitions and will work on lines as large as 12 inches for light commercial customers. All CIPP technology is supplied by Formadrains pulled-in-place, steam-cured pipe repair system.
Its a licensed product and we buy all of the berglass and epoxy from the supplier as well, says Levine. The product is a rubber bladder wrapped with epoxy and berglass, which becomes the new sewer line. Once prepared and delivered to the site, a rope is run from the city manhole to the cleanout. We then pull it through from the basement using a four-legged, torque-multiplying winch with a tow strap as the crew feeds it through the manhole and communicates with the guys in the basement with a walkie-talkie, says Levine. The product is then inated and cured. We like this product for two reasons, he says. First, its approved by the National Sanitation Foundation, which is required by the Michigan State Plumbing Board, and second its steam-cured. Weve tried ambient cure products that we have to baby-sit for two to six hours, and with Formadrain were ready to move to the next project in 45 minutes. The CIPP process works well if theres a structure running over the target pipe, or under a pool, garage or other building or addition. (continued)

The work begins with a free video inspection. Levine and Sons operates seven CCTV cameras, including the RIDGID SeeSnake, the Gen-Eye GL from General Pipe Cleaners, and Radiodetection models. Video inspection is really a loss leader for the drain cleaning and rehabilitation side of the business, says Levine. Generally, they also want their sewer line traced and we use either a RIDGID or Radiodetection locator for that. TRADITIONAL VS. hydrojet but they will still have root regrowth at some point or we can reline the lateral so theyll own a seamless length of pipe with no joints and will never have to experience root intrusion again.
(continued)

radley was failing, and failing badly. Not only did the members of his team avoid him in the shop and never stop by to say good morning, they had begun taping a target to his back every day and everyone had signed up for archery lessons. Bradleys leadership style just wasnt working. Unfortunately, Bradleys core problem was that he suffered from several leadership myths hed picked up from pop culture. Like many of us, he didnt have any formal training in leadership so his beliefs came mostly from watching movies. Leadership to Bradley was square-jawed men taking on insurmountable odds, rallying the troops with award-winning speeches, and humbly waiting for passionate kisses from pretty co-stars. Bradley thought he was prepared to be a great leader because he had been practicing his motivational speeches in the mirror and could spew out all of the latest leadership buzzwords without spitting too much. But somehow it just wasnt working.
2. THE MYTH OF OMNISCIENCE This is the belief that being the leader means knowing everything about everything. It comes in two varieties. In some environments, it makes the brand-new leader micromanage and attempt to oversee the smallest detail. In others, it makes the leader think they have to know the answer to every question. Why else would they be the leader? Bradley had these two issues. He started looking over everyones shoulder. Bradley also never failed to give an answer even when he was clueless. His staff noticed. They even started reading questions from the back of a quantum physics textbook just to mess with him. 3. THE MYTH OF OMNI-ADRENALINE This is probably the most damaging myth in todays complex, skilldriven team environments. It is the belief that excellent execution from a team demands adrenaline surges, rousing speeches and lots of shouting. Every movie has such inspirational moments and Bradley tried to create them every day. Unfortunately, it didnt seem to work on his team. Bradleys attempts at motivating were actually hurting his teams performance, not helping. Shouting and adrenaline surges are only useful for invoking over-learned, mindless performance in the face of fear and actual physiological arousal. Military units and sports teams are perfect for this type of leadership. But adrenaline surges also narrow cognition and thinking. Todays American work environment demands creative problem solving, exible decision-making and complex reasoning. When was the last time you had to jump on a grenade or charge into an enemy bayonet line? A leader suffering from omni-adrenaline in the modern workplace looks clueless and simpleminded. Why is he shouting? Im trying to concentrate over here! Leadership myths are presented to us every day. The myths of omnipotence, omniscience and omni-adrenaline are just a few of the leadership stereotypes that can be xed with training or mentorship. Fortunately, these inoculations are available in all kinds of dosage sizes. Everyone can get access to leadership training in todays technology-connected world. And why not? Wouldnt you want to create a more productive, cooperative workplace by dispelling the myths of leadership you suffer from? C
Real humans dont give blind obedience because of someones position on an organizational chart. And leaders cant alienate people, regardless of their feelings toward them.
What Bradley didnt realize was that his ailments were completely xable. They are pretty common today. Perhaps youve seen these leadership myths in your workplace: 1. THE MYTH OF OMNIPOTENCE This shouldnt be confused with the myth of omnipresence (the power to be everywhere) or the myth of omniplexes (the power to watch all of the movies in a theater on only one ticket). The myth of omnipotence is thinking you can tell anyone on the team to do practically anything and theyre going to just hop to it with a grin and a nod. It might happen in the movies but we know in reality a brand-new leader doesnt automatically get enthusiastic cooperation. He or she more often gets quiet acceptance, or perhaps begrudging compliance. Building cooperation and energetic participation requires time and careful nurturing in the real world. You might have to listen to a co-worker tell that unfunny story about their nephews brief stint with the Ice Capades. You might have to not get your way a few times in order to collaborate with your team. Real humans dont give blind obedience because of someones position on an organizational chart. And leaders cant alienate people, regardless of their feelings toward them.

The VactorTRAK remote information system from Vactor Manufacturing monitors and reviews cleaning operations on Vactor 2100 Plus combination sewer cleaners. It also can be retrotted onto Vactor 2100 Plus trucks. The VactorTRAK system collects and transmits data digitally and sends it to a secure server using a cellphone connection, says Jay Ghelani, product manager, Vactor Manufacturing. Data is hosted on a website operated by Vactor, which the user can log in and view. Built-in redundancy ensures against data loss. The system can track cleaning location, feet of pipe cleaned, how the cleaning was performed, water pressure used, water ow rate used, rate of hose payout, water and fuel usage, vacuum system status and amount of time spent cleaning. It also can track the total number of sewer lines cleaned and jobs performed. Ghelani says managers and supervisors can use the system to access the current location of sewer cleaner eets and status of each unit. A summary of daily statistics shows the work each unit has completed up to that point. Data can be exported to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for future viewing. Designed for professional contractors cleaning entire wastewater and storm sewer systems, data can be used to determine best practices and identify which truck is closest to a specic job for optimal productivity. The monitoring system also can be used for eet management, training,
proof of work performed and historical data of manholes cleaned. The hard-wired, truck-specic system can be used to produce reports by day, month, quarter, year or whatever timeline is desired. A touch-screen display in the cab enables the operator to input a work order number to correspond to the daily dispatch list, allowing the operations manager or supervisor to view activity performed for any specic job. A second operator input eld can be used to record specic information a manager might want to capture, such as asset number or cleaning nozzles used. 800/627-3171; www.vactor.com.

Im fully aware of the conditions our technicians work in, and I do consider them to be my most important asset. Our policy is that when we walk away from a home, or any other project, we know that the line is open and owing, and what the problem was to begin with, and where we might need to go next for a resolution.

I remember a call I got a little while back. This customer had an UnderTaker and had it on a pipe replacement job, and his client happened to be holding an outdoor event the day he was there to do the job. On top of that, it wound up he needed help with a part unexpectedly or else he was going to have to go ahead and dig up the lawn. But I was close enough that I was able to get there and get him what he needed without ever disrupting his clients event.
