Secondary Lesson Plan Template Grade level and subject discipline: Length of class: 8th Grade Art 45 minutes

LEARNING GOALS Understand and use knowledge of elements and principles of design. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students (A) will be able to define and describe the elements and principles of art (B) by reciting, describing, pointing out, or acting out each element or principle (C) effectively (D). KNOWLEDGE Students will need to have a general understanding that fundamental ideas about the practice of successful design are necessary. SKILLS Ability to take effective notes and listening skills. No other skills are absolutely necessary.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS NEEDED (What materials and resources will I use?): Writing utensil and paper ELMO projector

ASSESSMENT I will know if the students understand the elements and principles of art through interactive class discussion. LEARNING PLAN (How will you organize student learning? What instructional strategies will you use? How will you scaffold for student learning?) (Write in outline format). 1. Have students take split page notes 2. Use ELMO projector to write split page notes with the students 3. Write, define, explain, and model each element - Line: A dot taking a walk (rectilinear, curvilinear) // draw a dot and then drag across - Shape: A lane that connects to itself (organic, geometric) - Value: Lightness/darkness // draw examples of different ways to show value - Texture: Way something feels or appears to feel // show something in room with texture) - Form: a 3D shape // draw a square and then turn into a cube - Color: Talk about warm, cool, complementary colors - Space: Positive (subject) and negative (supports and enhances positive)

Write, define, explain, and model each principle - Balance: Asymmetrical, symmetrical // If you put it on a scale, will it fall over? - Pattern: Something that repeats itself // draw a patter on ELMO projector - Rhythm: Repetitive in pattern but can change // have students tap a beat on desk - Emphasis: Something that stands out // have students say the word emphasis with the emphasis on sis - Contrast: Darker darks + lighter lights (show on ELMO what contrast does) - Movement: Doesnt have to move but illusion of movement // show example in room - Variety: If I gave you a project only using lines, can you use variety? Yes - Proportion: Size comparison // E.g., Caricature drawing at fair - Harmony: Blending + working together // Have kids sing two different notes to create harmony. ** With extra time, conduct a review session with different types of instructional strategies (E.g., touching something in the room that is a cool color, create a form with at least two other people, have them write down the two types of space and then check answers with a partner, etc.) **
