Vectors Scalar Product

This document defines the scalar product (also called the dot product) of two vectors a and b. The scalar product is equal to a1b1 + a2b2 + a3b3 and represents the magnitude of a multiplied by the magnitude of b multiplied by the cosine of the angle between the two vectors. Some key properties are that the scalar product is 0 if the vectors are perpendicular and largest if the vectors are parallel. Examples are provided to calculate the scalar product and angle between vectors. Exercises at the end practice calculating scalar products and identifying perpendicular vectors.

2: SCALAR PRODUCT
Definition
The scalar, or dot, product of two vectors a ( a1 , a2 , a3 ) and b ( b1 , b2 , b3 )
is a scalar, defined by:

a b = a1b1 + a2b2 + a3b3

or geometrically
a

a b = a b cos

where is the angle between a and b.

Properties
1. If a and b are non-zero vectors and
a is perpendicular to b then a b = 0 , (cos(/2)= 0).
2. If a is parallel to b then

a b = a b (cos(0)=1)

3. The dot product does not depend on the order of multiplication.

(5, 0, 1) (1, 4, 3) = 5 + 0 3 = 2
(2i + 4k) ( 3i 2j) = 6 + 0 + 0 = 6

Angle between two vectors

The angle,, (0

Examples
1. If a = (2, 3, 1) and b = (5, 2, 2) find the angle , between a and b.
