Module 6, Exercise

This document provides diagrams and descriptions for 7 questions and asks to design an experiment for each that tests a stated hypothesis. The experiments should include: the aim, variables, apparatus, procedure describing how the manipulated variable is controlled and responding variable is measured, how data will be tabulated, and how the data will be analyzed. Experiments could investigate hypotheses about how force affects spring deformation, pressure affects gas volume, load affects boat sinking, electrical connections affect bulb brightness, and more.

Based on the diagrams in Questions 1 4, (a) Make one suitable inference (b) State one appropriate hypothesis that

t could be investigated. (c) Describe how you would design an experiment to test your hypothesis. In your description, state clearly the following: (i) Aim of experiment (ii) Variables in the experiment (iii) List of apparatus and materials (iv) Arrangement of the apparatus (v) The procedure of the experiment, which includes the method of controlling the manipulated variable and the method of measuring the responding variable (vi) The way you would tabulate the data (vii) The way would analyse the data [12 marks]

Question 2
Diagram 2.1 shows an inverted beaker contains
an air trapped is converted and immersed in the water. Diagram 2.2 shows the volume of air trapped in the beaker decreased when the beaker is pushed down in the water.

Design an experiment to test the hypothesis using syringe, thick rubber and other suitable apparatus.

Question 3 Diagram 3.1 shows a car pulling a heavily packed trailer. The trailer is attached to the car with a locking mechanism. The cars engine is exerting a constant force that causes the car and the trailer to accelerate together. Diagram 3.2 shows what happens when the locking mechanism fails and the trailer is dislodged. The car lurches forward with an increased acceleration on its own.

Question 1 Diagram 1.1 shows a man pulling a spring with a force of 20 N. Diagram 1.2 shows the man pulling the same spring with a force of 50 N.

Design an experiment to investigate the hypothesis using spring slotted weights and other suitable apparatus.

Question 4 Diagram 4.1 and 4.2 show the same diver swimming at different depths in the sea. In Diagram 4.1, the diver suffered discomfort especially in his ears when he was diving deep into the sea. The diver then found that the pain in his ears has gone when he reached the sea surface as shown in Diagram 4.2.

Ouestion 6 Figure 6.1 and 6.2 show two similar electric kettles used to boil water. The power ratings for the kettles are 240 V, 1000 W. It is found that the water in the kettle in Figure 6.2 boils faster than the water in the kettle in Figure 6.1.

Describe an experiment to investigate the hypothesis using a measuring cylinder, a rubber tube and other apparatus. Question 5 Diagram 5.1 and Diagram 5.2 show a boat with different load. It is observed that the boat in Diagram 5.2 sinks more than in Diagram 5.1
