Notes from Mrs. Wetzel

April is Child Abuse Awareness month and keeping our children safe is a priority we all share. The following are a few tips to help prevent sexual abuse: take an active role in your childs life learning about activities they are involved in and people they spend time with; watch for grooming behaviors from predators such as luring your child to spend time with them alone, invading privacy and giving gifts for no reason; make sure your child knows they can talk to you about anything; teach your child accurate names for body parts and ok touches and not ok touches(bathing suit area); educate your child on good secrets (birthday party) and bad secrets (those that make a child feel uncomfortable or unsafe); closely monitor your childs technology use; and trust your instincts. If your child discloses abuse to you, stay calm, listen carefully and never blame the child, thank your child for telling you, report the abuse right away. To report child abuse in Indiana please call 1-800-800-5556. To view additional parent tips please visit https://childwelfare.gov/pubs/guide2014/tipsheets_en.pdf#page=4.

Positive Parenting: 5 Rules to Help You Deal with Negative Child Behavior More Positively by Debbie Pincus MS LMHC
Do your kids drive you crazy? If you were asked to describe them, after saying, "He's a good kid, but..." would you use words like defiant, whiny, unmotivated, disrespectful, angry, or demanding, with a few positives sprinkled in? If the negatives loom larger in your mind than the positives, the first thing to realize is that this is natural. We parents are human after all, which means we tend to look for whats wrong with our offspring so that we can focus on what we should fix in them. Somehow this calms us down; we believe we are improving their chances of long-term survival in an often difficult world. Putting a stop to searching for what we fear is an important parentingand lifeskill to learn. The problem is, however, that if we spend most of our time worrying, fixing and trying to shape our kids up into what we think they should be, we miss the positives of who they actually are. The good news is that its actually more effective to look at the balanced picture if you want to positively influence your child and keep communication open between you. Here are five rules to get your started:

Rule #1: Stop Searching for What You Fear.

When tension rises, parents can have a tendency to search for evidence of what they fear. I had a friend who was so afraid that her son was a social loser that it kept her up at nights. She herself had struggled socially all her life. To deal with her fear for her son, she rode by the playground at recess to look for evidence to confirm her negative belief about him that he had no friends. Of course, when you look for evidence to confirm your fearful beliefs, youll find thingsand label them as such. As she drove up, there he was standing alone on one end of the blacktop while all the other kids were playing on the other end. She got out of her car and ran up to him practically frantic and said, Jake, why are you standing here all alone and not joining in with the other kids? He said, Mom, can you move out of the way. Im the goalie and Im in the middle of a game of soccer! Read more: http://www.empoweringparents.com/positive-
