Head: University police jurisdiction expands off campus Deck: The university can punish off campus offenses SEO: University police can arrest students off campus
The university police jurisdiction and Code of Student Conduct expanded this semester to include several off-campus areas, mostly populated by students. The Code of Student Conduct labels appropriate university responses when students violate rules. The police jurisdiction refers to physical
boundaries in which campus police can act. Pupils have negative, positive and neutral views about the policy. Junior French and English double
major, Emily Mills, had a negative view of the expansion. Its big brother-ish, Mills said while rolling her eyes. She added it was not the universitys business what students do off-campus. Mills said this jurisdiction will cause conflict between young people and police. Sophomore elementary education major Victoria Bellmay thinks the policy will protect her rather than cause conflict. Bellmay said she was comforted that the campus is prioritizing safety. (more) Victoria Bellmay feels safer in her off-campus sorority house. Photo by Brigette Fine
I take the bus home from the library at night because its creepy outside, Bellmay said. As an off-campus resident, the student looks forward to feeling safer. Some students are undecided Sophomore letters and science major Ian Moritz lives on campus and said he does not think the policy has been enforced long enough to judge it. The new jurisdiction has good intentions, he said while shrugging, Im pretty sure the whole point of it is to keep things off pupils records. Moritz heard Dr. Katherine Beardsley, the Associate Dean of Behavioral and Social Sciences, speak about the expansion and thinks it will prevent offenses from getting on permanent records because the university can handle matters alone. Freshman animal science major Molly Dana never heard Dr. Beardsley or any university official Ian Moritz is confident the policy is in effect for the right reasons. Source: Facebook discuss the jurisdiction. Since this is my first year, Im ignorant to any other policy, Dana said. If it helps people, its good. If it just gets students in trouble, then

University police stretched thin University police Sgt. Lilly was also neutral about the policys effect on students. Its all about safety, he said. If we can cover more ground, we can keep more students out of trouble. However, the police department does not have more officers yet to cover the ground. The university approved five more officers, but it will take about one year to get those five trained and instated as officers Sgt. Lilly said. Sgt. Lilly expects the jurisdiction to evolve over time, and added that 15 years ago the police only had authority for situations on Route One. With time, the policy and peoples opinions will change. For now, opinions are mixed.
