Caitlin Regan English 1 Thursday, March 27, 2014 Period 3 & 8: (47 minutes) The Odyssey OVERVIEW/RATIONALE Today,

we will finish reading aloud the last section of The Odyssey together as a class. We will then discuss Penelopes perspective and how that might differ from Odysseuss. For the remainder of class, students will have time to work on their epic heroeswhich are due Monday. There will be a progress check in the last ten minutes of class. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS What does it mean to be a hero? What is the importance of family and ones home? What does home mean? How has Greek mythology and The Odyssey specifically influenced modern literature and storytelling? Why do we study The Odyssey? Is The Odyssey a worth text for us to study. GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will read The Odyssey in order to understand the influential and historical significance of this text upon modern literature. Students will recognize allusions in modern culture in order to connect them back to Greek mythology and the epic poem. STANDARDS L.N.1.3 Use appropriate strategies to comprehend literature during the reading process. L.F.2.2.1 Analyze how literary form relates to and/or influences meaning of a text L.F.2.4.1 Interpret and analyze works from a variety of genres for literary, historical, and/or cultural significance. MATERIALS 33 Textbooks, PowerPoint, Projector, Laptop, extra copies of assignment guidelines PROCEDURES OPENER Do Now: vocabulary matching synonyms (quiz next Wed.) (10 min) BODY OF THE LESSON Read aloud together Odysseus and Penelope (3.5 pgs) Discuss Penelopes perspective/counter-narrative idea (10-15 min) Remainder of class, students have time to work on epic poems. PROGRESS CHECK: In last ten minutes of class, students must have one of the followingat least page of writing OR a detailed outline that clearly indicates student knows who epic hero is and what his/her goal is and what challenges he/she will face along the way

CLOSURE HW: Epic hero assignment is due Monday ACCOMODATIONS I will answer any and all questions and circle the classroom while students work independently. Students are given the opportunity to create any story about any hero that they choose. For two students with IEPs, the length of the assignment has been accommodated slightly. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Students will receive ten points for meeting one of the progress check requirements. I will observe and monitor student behavior during full-class reading as well as independent work time, ensuring that students stay on-task during transition.
